Living room converted to a climbing gym? Well, she clearly is no slave to convention and is an independent thinker. I admire that, especially in a politician. Good for her.

Canyons District is on the east side. Jordan is the west. She might have been a member of the Jordan District west-side transition team, but certainly not the Canyons District west-side transition team.

Maybe she will use her unconventional ways to fix the main city park and put in an actual parking lot. Every time there is a baseball game or other event, people have to park on the perimeter and get ticketed by the cops since it's a no parking zone. That's because there is no parking other than the few angle parking spaces around the road. There are not near enough of those. Lousy park planning by the prior administration.

No mediator | 7:28 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
At 39, Johnson is immature and inexperienced. She's no independent thinker. Outgoing Mayor Newton's advice to "not step on toes" is sage but it will never happen. For Johnson, it's always been my way or the highway. Look at her record.

Innovative leader | 7:37 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
It sounds like our new mayor is a breath of fresh air. I look forward to city leadership that departs from the same old/same old!

West Jordan may finally break into the ranks of reality by not spending precious tax dollars on warm and fuzzy projects that don't have anything to do with fiscal conservatism or essential services.

Our family is really looking forward to the next several years under innovative elected officials. We're long overdue for some innovative policy making.

We're expecting a lot from our new mayor and the two new council members! I really hope to see some real positive progress. Look out Utah...I think Mayor Johnson will take a back seat to no one.

Mayor-elect Johnson: MAKE US PROUD!

Certainly not | 7:43 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
"Certainly not the Canyons District" team. Proof of how Johnson is no mediator. Johnson is a divider not a uniter. Good luck West Jordan. We're going to need it.

Congratulations Mayor. Keep climbing, as an old "climbing mayor" I can tell you it will keep you sane. Have a fine administration.

I also look forward the leadership of Melissa. Because of her engineering background, coupled with a communications degree, I am encouraged she will not be swayed by emotions, but rather look at the facts, and that she will be able to persuade others to make the changes we need.

I know nothing about Mayor Johnson, but as I read the article all I kept thinking was "another Sarah Palin."
Whether you think that is good or bad, did anyone else have that thought?

Re: No mediator/certainly not | 9:17 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
How pathetic that even an embarassingly humiliating rejection of the opposition's platform and tactics doesn't bring them around to acknowledging the error of their ways.

The voters have spoken overwhelmingly. I believe we will be rewarded by Johnson's mediation abilities. Mediation is not necessarily compromise. Johnson has proven that strategy, advance preparation, and negotiation are recipes for success. West Jordan is now poised to enter a new era of long-term success, creativity, and common-sense.

It certainly is inspiring to have a new regime on the horizon that will reinstill confidence in local government.

To the sore losers - get over yourselves and get on board with progress!

Thanks, Mayor Newton | 9:27 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Many thanks to out-going Mayor Newton and I look forward to the new Mayor's ideas and hard work.

As the state's fourth largest city, I think it is a shame that the WJ mayor position is only part-time as I am sure Mayor Newton did, and now Mayor Johnson will, put in many more hours than that. Good thing she likes to volunteer!

What is the fun of a climbing wall you can jump and touch the top of it. Hopefully she handles challanges better than her easy climbing wall. :)

Climb horizontally? | 12:58 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
To No fun--I was thinking the same thing. Looks like the kids in the picture can touch the top of the wall standing on the floor. Maybe on this one they climb horizontally...

Better than | 5:19 p.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Well even being able to touch the top of a climbing wall is better than just touching the remote to the tv...Congratulations for thinking outside the box.

No. Utah sees a major earthquake every 350 years. Last one? 350 years ago.
