Comments about ‘Provo closer to getting convention center’

It's about time! Can't wait for the construction to start next summer! What a great asset for our downtown renevention.

I just hope they are smart and build in spectator/audience seating in the ballroom. At least seating for 1,000-2,000 If not, then nothing will go in there, everyone will stay with the McKay Events Center or Marriott Center or high school gyms.

Don't waste your money. You will never recover the investment. Provo is not a convention destination.

Actually Provo could be a convention destination if there was a good convention center. With two Universities within 15 minutes, a major airport 45 min away, and several hotels nearby, it is feasible. I attended a convention at UVU earlier this year that was well attended. Unfortunately, the facilities were really not adequate. A convention center could remedy that.

A convention center in Provo? Who would want to have a convention in Provo of all places? Why go to Provo when you got the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, and Las Vegas 7-8 hours away?

Besides, there's virtually no hotel rooms in Provo, bars and nightclubs are scarce, and there's really nothing to do there except doing some lame shopping at the University Mall and Provo Towne Center.

Not building adequate parking with the convention center makes the whole process a waste of money that will not pay off for taxpayers.

A convention center needs to seat 1500 people at tables to eat. If it is not large enough to do that, conventions will go somewhere that is. The meals are used to bring the ENTIRE convention group together and that is what is currently limiting conventions in Utah County now.

If they do above ground parking, I hope they don't tear down a lot of older buildings for it. But, if they do decide to go ahead an build above ground, I hope they leave the street level for stores, restaurants, etc. Because a parking garage facade doesn't help to enliven that part of downtown. And, I believe the goal here is to enliven downtown. But, to enliven one street at the expense of turning your back on another could be counterproductive, and a costly mistake in the long run possibly. They should think about the entire street front of the blocks, not just the street front of University or Center Street.
