As most of my colleagues will attest, we try to provide each patient with the individualized care they deserve. However, the "art of medicine" requires flexibility when dealing with complex and serious health issues. There is no effective way to predict and schedule for the contingencies we face each day as providers; from phone calls, medication refill requests, to disability and FMLA paperwork, etc. Is it any wonder the average physician spends nearly half their time on paperwork rather than seeing patients? The fast-food mentality that permeates our culture often expects service as though each encounter with a healthcare provider is the same as the supersized meal they just purchased at the drive through down the street.

I love my doctors and would wait all day for them. To avoid a long wait time, as much as possible, I request either the very first appointment of the day or the very last. There are fewer delays first thing and when I am the last appointment and I have to wait, I bring a book and wait. I do my part and have my notes to give to them about my symptoms and try not to linger with non-applicable questions. Patients need to be understanding and I am always willing to reschedule if the doctor is dealing with emergencies. I realize that not everyone has these options, but when possible it does help everyone.

I really appreciate my doctor. He never seems rushed and will always spend the time necessary to answer any questions, and the greatest part is that I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes in the waiting room.
