correct me if I am wrong, but I think Alta is trying for its 3rd championship game. I think Bingham won 3 years ago.

Once again Mr. Felt you are the man. Your stats and information and coverage of high school football is the best. Keep up the goodness. Thanks.

wow it is so weird to think that brighton who didnt even make the playoffs beat three of the final four teams in 5A by a combine score of 76 to 10. Wish they would have showed up for the jordan games... they would have face bingham in the first round.. the only team they didnt beat out of the semifinal teams, that game would have been a great one.

Also... I'm pretty sure the score of the last Bingham vs Alta matchup was 38 Bingham 34 Alta.
anonymous | 12:15 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Bingham won the last matchup 38 to 34
re anonymous | 12:16 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
you're wrong.
Cottonwood Fan | 12:20 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Just a correction, between Timpview and Mountain Crest, they have won the last 5 4A state championships. Timpview won the championship in '04,'06,'07 & '08. Mountain Crest took it in '05. In my opinion that number will increase to one more. The winner of this game takes it all. This will be a great game, both teams are really tough. Good luck

Hunter playoff apperance 19 times in only 20 seasons impressive I had no idea.
ANON | 12:58 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
will it ever end?? does anyone besides myself ever get sick of seeing these two teams end up in the playoffs every single year?? not only high school but little league as well..give someone else a chance for change. I am not trying to be negative and I give them their props..they are both great teams..just get sick of seeing them in the playoffs year after year...
Re: Anon | 1:25 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I get sick of guys like you crying about all this stuff. Hey they have earned the right to be there every year. What do you want them to do lose on purpose, this was a really stupid comment!! I like to see the best teams play, and they are it.
where is pg? | 1:37 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Isn't pg playing? Oh, I guess you can't win them all.
re: ANON at 12:58 | 1:40 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
What do you mean "Give someone else a chance for a change." What would you like these two teams to do? Forfeit to make the other teams feel better? If someone else wants a chance, it is always up for the taking.... They need to earn it! Your comment is just plain ridiculous..
hactched chickens | 1:52 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
everyone up north said bountiful has easy road to championship....nope then they said well bonnevilles defense is the greatest ever and they will crush dixie well....sorry again dont crown a champion until the games are played
re: ANON? | 2:14 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
You must be a part of that Obama crowd who believes everyone deserves everything without working for it. Bingham and Alta are the best in the state because the High School and Little League programs are simply the best in the state. Hard work = success.
Stats Man | 2:15 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Just a correction-Davis defeated Hunter in the 2002 Quarterfinals. It is wrong in the article.
Wait? | 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
How come there is no mention about the greatest QB to ever walk on a football field in Utah? You know, the PG QB. He isn't on any of these at all? This must be rigged. Just kidding. Alex Hart is the best QB this state has seen in many years and will be remembered for many years to come. Too bad he didn't break every single record, but got dang close on them all. We are more than happy to get you up north at USU. I can't wait to see what you can do at the next level. Aggies are getting the best QB in the state hands down!

Go Aggies!

If you're referring to the 11:23 commenter, you are wrong. Bingham won the 5 A championship in 2006. That was three years ago. Look it up.
If you're disagreeing with both the 12:13 and 12:15 comments, you're wrong again. Bingham beat Alta on August 28 of this year, 38-34 after being behind 28-14 at halftime. Alta scored a last-minute touchdown but Bingham recovered the onside kick attepmt and ran out the clock. You can also look up the final in that game.
Scores for both the 2006 5 A Championship game and the Bingham/Alta game from week 2 of this season can be found on this web site.

Boy, oh boy are we lucky to have Alex Hart coming up north. Almost 9 records, are you kidding me?
What time? | 4:42 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Hey Felt!

How come you don't mention the Pleasant Grove vs. Pittsburg Steelers game? Don't they play on Saturday in the 6A final? Isn’t the game being covered by ESPN, FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS? What time is it at?

Look for PG the greatest High School Team ever (they have 10, count em 10 D1 recruits you know)to defeat the defending Super Bowl Champions by at least 56-0 to take home the title of "Greatest Football Team Of All Time" Trophy!

What? They got blasted by Davis in the quarters.?.?.?

Well... Coulda Woulda Shoulda...

See ya next year!

Re:Anonymous | 12:04 p.m. Nov. 1 | 4:56 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Brighton would have got blown out worse then Jordan did against Bingham. Brighton was not that good this year, they peaked early while other teams were working out the kinks. They play Alta today and they lose by 30, I am not an Alta fan. I just think Alta overlooked Brighton and played a really bad game. It happens in HS sports, your dealing with 16-17 years olds. Hunter is really good right now, so Brighton beat them and Davis early. The two team that Hunter and Davis played in the Quarters beat Brighton easily during the season.
Brighton needs to get over itself, you got beat twice by an average Jordan team and didn't even make the playoffs. Quit your comparisons as you lost and your season ended before any playoff games started.
4A!! | 5:00 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
ha! that funny everybody up north said you guys in salt lake county are the best football teams in the state but it looks like you got timpview (utah county) springville (utah county) and dixie (washington county) haha three out of the four teams are in the semifinals it just shows who knows how to play ball in the state
To 4a!!! | 5:33 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
The best 4a football teams in the state are not in SLC correct, the best 5a teams however...
Re: 4A!! | 5:48 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Utah county isn't in southern utah.

Hunter champs in 03, Davis 04, bingham 06, Alta 07, 08. Shoul
of all these champs which one was the best? Just for fun
Re: hunter playoffs 19 straight | 6:14 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I guess that makes sense if your region is weak then it's easy to get in.

We wish Coach Monkres and his Dixie HS football team the best of luck against Springville. May your QB be Sharp and your team win!
Lone Peak | 7:07 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Its no secret people.....

Why is it Alta, Bingham and Davis in the Final 4? Yes they are good. Real reason is they have 3,000 kids to choose from. People at these programs want to dismiss that fact as it isnt that big of deal. But when LP and others only have 1,700....give me 1,000 kids extra to choose from and I will win also.

It's the same as a current 5A team, like Lone Peak, going against a team that has 1,300 less kids. That would put them against a 1A team. I like LP's chances. When Alta has 7 Freshman teams, and over a thousand in its little league program---they are bound to get 22 decent players.

Thats why I want Hunter. BCS Buster!
re Lone Peak | 7:27 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
You guys lost to Hunter. How many kids do they have. They must have more than you guys or you wouldnt have lost. I think I know what you mean. Basically if Lone Peak doesnt win the championship you blame it on enrollment. What a joke. Just play the game.
re: LP 7:27 | 7:42 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
way to spin it. LP lost to Hunter, then are rooting for them. You are obviously a BCS parent.

Facts are right as stated. Why should Roy have to compete in 5A, when Alta has as many football players as Roy does students.

cmon UHSSA make a 6A so it is fair. Hecks, lets combine 2 4A schools to equal enrollment at Alta, Bingham and Davis. I bet combining two great 4A schools would make the BCS schools think.
hunter fan | 7:54 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
i dont know what your talking about lone peak hunter might have more students than you but our football team is one of the smallest in the states we could not fill our sideline you had at least 100 kids on yours

but thanks for rooting us on

p.s. we have more students than alta and davis
6A | 8:01 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Having more classifications would water down Utah even more. If anything there should be only 1A-4A. Hunter has around 2200, Davis around 2400 and Bingham and Alta are around 2500 I believe. The playing field is pretty even. In that case riverton should be there too since they have the most students. Wanna know why Davis Bingham and Alta have so many kids? Cause people want to go there. If you don't have as many kids, then winning should be that much more rewarding.
Anonymous | 8:10 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
No way hunter has more kids than Alta. Maybe Davis now with syacuse realignment.
6A | 8:58 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
8:01

exactly my point.

Playing field is even with bigger schools. Try Hillcrest, West or even PG at 1700 or so kids vs. 2500? with 800 more kids, 400 boys I can find 10 more studs out of 400 to help my team.

BCS is wrong. So are the bigger schools. Its quantity over quality, with more kids you obviously have better teams as each position is stronger.

The Final 4 teams are 4 of the biggest 5 in the State. (Riverton lost) Biggest studentbody in each Region won.

THATS A FELT FACT!!!!!

Re: 6A  | 9:53 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Never happen. Period...

What the UHSAA needs to look at is the feeder programs (Ute Conference)of the bigger schools. Not the enrollment.

How do you expect a Hillcrest, Taylorsville, Granger, Cyprus, West, Murray, or Kearns who have one Junior team (20 kids) to compete with Bingham, Riverton, Jordan, Alta, and Brighton who have five to six teams? (140 kids)

Thats why these teams struggle, next season those weaker teams might not field a sophmore team next year due to the lack of players. While the Binghams and Alta's of the world reload for the next year.

Don't ever get me started about the stupidest rule in Utah High School, "open enrollment."

Not according to three web sites.
Site ASite BSite CRange Average
Alta 2,4452,4602,417+/-43 2,441
Davis2,3672,4082,421+/-54 2,399
Bingham 2,2482,5552,375+/-307 3,393
Hunter2,1552,2502,186+/-95 2,197
LP1,8972,2001,971+/-303 2,023
(NOTE: I would show the names of the web sites but forum rules prevented my comment from being posted with the names so I’ve removed them)

These show a wide range for each school but the highest shown for any school is 658 more than the lowest estimate for Lone Peak, not 1,300 as you claim.

We are so confident in him, we went out a week later and added another QB from Hawaii.

Guess USU is the one kidding you.

Hmm. THAT didn't align as it showed when I posted it.

I'll try again
Site A Site B Site C Range Average
Alta 2,445 2,460 2,417 +/-43 2,441
Davis 2,367 2,408 2,421 +/-54 2,399
Bingham 2,248 2,555 2,375 +/-307 3,393
Hunter 2,155 2,250 2,186 +/-95 2,197
LP 1,897 2,200 1,971 +/-303 2,023

Let's see if this is more comprehensible.
El Clave | 12:44 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Lone Peak, don't be a poor sport by assigning abstract reasoning to your quick exit from the playoffs. Your enrollment argument is ridiculous. Since its inception in 1978, Alta has consistently had one of the largest studentbody counts in the state. Yet before 2006, Alta had enjoyed only two state championships, '83 and '88. The driving factors for Alta having such a successful football program over the last five years are great kids, great support and great coaching. Coach Hamilton and his staff are wonderful at recognizing and developing talent. UHSSA classifications are based on a school's enrollment not on a school's available talent pool.
to "ANON" | 8:08 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Your "..give someone else a chance for change..." comment reminds me of my sons little league BB coach, a husband & wife combo. My son was playing SS and getting a lot of grounders, the wife coach calls timeout and comes out on the field and whispers something in my son's ear. Well, the next play a grounder comes to him & he watches it go between his legs into LF. I questioned him on it and he said the wife coach told him he was getting to many balls and he needed to give someone else a chance to catch some!
Size? | 9:21 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Does size matter? Juan Diego is a small school, but has been very successful even against schools 3x their size?

re: to "anon" 8:08 | 9:23 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
That wouldnt be the case at Alta or Bingham because they would have 3 shortstops there instead of one because of numbers.
Hey BT | 9:27 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Where did you go to school

The 3 sites have Bingham enrollment at:
2,248
2,555
2,375

And the average is 3,393?

Try again.
Springville Fan | 10:12 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
So proud of the Springville team, I doubt that many of the Red Devil players are aware of how much this game must mean to the coaching staff. The last time the Red Devils were in the semifinals was in 1985, the QB was Scott Mitchell, the coach today.
Many of the coaches in 1985 are on todays' coaching staff, some of the Red Devil players on todays team are the sons of the players on the 1985 team. A generation later. This must mean a great deal to Scott Mitchell to be back on the Utes field with the Red Devils as part of the coaching staff with so many of the coaches that were instrumental in his career. Way to go Red Devils thanks for working so hard this season, Springville is so proud of you, regardless of the outcome of todays game(although it would be nice to be victorious).
USU Fan | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Ya, kind of like Stanford added a much better QB than the PG kid huh? Every school, every year picks 2 QB's. If you didn't know that you should stay off here. That kid from Hawaii is probably going to play safety anyways.
Number Whiners | 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Your all nuts!! The numbers issue being posted here is stupid. There are plenty of schools with plenty of students that never see success. Why? Because you don't use what you have to the fullest. When those programs have good kids they see the writing on the wall and they go somewhere else.

You mean you can't find 20 good players in 2000 students. If you can't do that you won't find 10 in 400 more. Come on. The Players are there, they are just not playing for the school. Just adding more bodies does not fix it. The underlying problem remains the same.

No player will want to open enroll in your school either. It is not the number - it is the program and the coaching and the involvement. You need to get the students involved... that means you need parents involved and supporting.

To Open Enrollment | 10:34 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
To open enrollment - it is called competition. If you lock a good kid in a bad program he will not be interested and may not play at all - that is why the numbers issue here is not the problem. Who wants to just take a beating with out a chance to win. You sacrifice one kid for the whole program - must be a socialist. Open enrollment forces programs to be good and competitive. Like companies attracting the best talent pool for employees. Look at Skyline - their day has come and gone... No one is going there for OE anymore. They go to Alta, Bingham, Davis, Cottonwood, Riverton... If you locked it down most kids would just pass on the headache on not even play and the whole program would suffer state wide. Competition for the best to be the best is good.
6A? | 10:42 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009
Are you kidding? It's not the number of kids that matters. It is the percentage of kids. There should only be 4 classifications, and maybe only 3. With 4 classifications, fewer than 300 students is 1A. 300-600 (100% increase) should be 2A. 600-1200 (100% increase) should be 3A. 1200-2400 (100% increase) should be 4A. No 5A. It is actually more fair for a school with 1700 to play a school with 2400 than it is a school with 250 to play a school with 600. Another thing....Stop worrying about travel. "Travel" means a Salt Lake school has to go to Davis County, yet North Summit and San Juan (8 hour trip one-way) are in the same region? Biggest 25 schools are 4A, next 25 are 3A, next 25 are 2A, and the rest are 1A. Then it is cut and dry. Both of these solutions are better than what we have now. And one more thing. Private and Charter schools play up a classification just like EVERY OTHER STATE IN THE NATION.
