"... he enjoys absorbing contact rather than duck oncoming defenders."

Really???

Have you ever watched Max Hall play? Have you ever watched him take a hit.

The most obvious aspect of his game is that he does not like to get hit. When he gets hit he gets rattled, makes mistakes, and throws interceptions.

Hall plays great against teams that can't pressure him and can't cover his receivers. When he's pressured, hit, and when his receivers are covered he crumbles.

Ask Utah, FSU, and TCU.

Umm what QB looks good when they have pressure in their face and their receivers are covered? I would like to know, because I have yet to see one. If your recievers cant get open and you dont have time to throw the ball, your not gonna be very successful
Good Plan Hall... | 11:22 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
Keep running the ball and acting like a running back so when you get injured Riley can take the reins and get ready for next year's BCS run. I'd rather you run than throw ANOTHER interception.

So does Hall enjoy absorbing the contact as Call says, or in Hall's own words, does he take the contact and avoid the slide because he thinks its "safer"?

Hall is not a QB who thrives on contact.
Re: 11:04 p.m. | 11:51 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
The great QBs make defenses pay for bringing pressure.

Hall offers up interceptions when defenses bring pressure.

Haven't you heard? Max Hall is the next Steve Young. FACT.

You all make me laugh Hall is not the next Steve Young
Anonymous | 3:46 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Anyone who throws eleven interceptions in a season is no Steve young

The trash talk goes back and forth on Hall again. It's the BYU supporter of Hall vs. the Riley revolution. It's the Cougar vs. anti Cougar (Utes, Aggies, whoever). It's blue vs. red almost daily in the Utah news papers sports sections. Posts here and there, comments, and everything else. Here's an objective Ute take on Hall. Yeah he rubs me as smug, as does mendenhall, but I do see some toughness in Hall. I also see some stubborn, the kind of which can get him into trouble. I think Hall welcomes physical contact, and definetely isn't scared of it. Mentally I think (and this is generalizing) is where he gets weak. Sure pressure effects any QB. It's when he gets pressured and nobody is open (or spotted) that he gets the stubborn throw it into trouble syndrome. I say the take a hit vs. the slide thing is comparable to the throw the ball away/take a sack vs. throw into trouble thing Max does. Sure gunslingers can be great QBs but you got to know some limitations. Max hall does not have a big arm.
Y fan | 6:49 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
hall has thrown for more yards then steve young but I liked steve young's style better and I think was a better QB. Hall I think has been better these last games and has stepped up to be a true leader.
Maxi | 6:49 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009

can't play when defense puts on pressure. He will throw interceptions.
Maxi does not have toughness to win big games against excellent teams like TCU, Utah.
Maxi can win against teams like Wyoming, UNLV, UW (0-12 team).
Even Cougar fans will admit they're ready to see Maxi "graduate"...
Utah fans love him though since he is like a 2nd Utes QB when Utes plays BYU
Ernest T. Bass | 7:57 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
He can hit harder than a lot of linebackers.
UTE fans are a joke | 8:34 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I am not a huge Max Hall fan but the best part is when the Ute fans rip him as well. The funniest part is he is easily the best QB in the MWC next to Dalton and Utes cant even find a starter and think they can put in a freshman VS the #1 Defense in the nation Sat in TCU. Utah would only benefit from having someone like Hall instead of having joke QB's who can barley beat teams like CSU and Wyoming whom we destroyed. Rip Hall all you want, I am with ya but dont do if your any other team in the MWC bc you have 0 room to talk with your jokes at QB. I am just grateful Utah has been able to squeak by the last 4 games and barley beat terrible MWC teams. The wyoming game was a realllll nail biter, 22-10 and at home... That was similar to BYU at WYO right?? 52-0? O wait mabye not... Well at least you have a credible win this yr VS Oregon... Oh wait you dont... Basically get a life UTE fans and an good QB then talk.
back | 8:41 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Steve Young was much faster and bigger than Hall, and he liked to hit. However, as the years wore on, he got smarter and smarter and traded in running for passing. Eventually, the concussions toke their toll, but it was nice to see Young's development as a QB. It's much better to give up a yard or two, go back to the huddle healthy and live to fight another day. McMahon's brashness cost him some good years in the NFL. Hall is still learning.
UTE QB's soooo good | 8:42 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Ya your right UTE fans your QB situation is soo much better I would not want Max Hall he only has 2,543 yards passing with 21 TD's and a QB rating of 167.63. I would much rather have your QB Cain who has 1,624 yards passing with 11 TD's and a QB rating of 139. You made a great point and hes led you to great wins over... ummm... Oregon..??? Wait no... O ya San Jose State by 10 points, I am sorry your right!
Kruger | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009

hall | 9:41 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
hall would rather thrown a interception than win.....sliding is the least of his problems
Idahoan | 10:06 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
"Kruger is still open." And isn't he sitting on the bench? It's not hard to be open when you're on the bench.

I worry a little about Hall getting hurt but he has been playing extremely well the last few weeks. Fun to see him run and stick his nose where he shouldn't. Just hope he is able to make it healthy to the Utah game for a little redemption.

Hall will be missed but I look forward to seeing Nelson and Heaps play. Now, where are those fast mormon DBs hidding out?
He better slide | 11:19 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
He better slide or get down otherwise he is going to get rocked and fumble.
Anonymous | 11:47 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Hall > both Utah's QB's combined.
you all are missing the point | 12:15 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Sorensen got injured...on his mission! how sad is that to be listed in the injury update?!
Mr. BYU | 12:27 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Max should keep up the heads up approach. As for other sliding...Utah will be going down against TCU this Saturday.

Normally as a BYU fan and Utah resident I would cheer for Utah when they play teams other than BYU. But this year TCU has the best chance at being a BCS buster and in my mind should be in the championship game if they go undefeated...they are that good. It will be TCU by 14-21 points. TCU 35 Utah 17.

Sorry Utes.

Utah will not score 17 against the #1 D in the nation.. sorry UTES not even that.
RE: gdog3 | 1:09 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Finally an objective UTAH fan. I don't agree with all that you said, but appreciate your insight and perspective. After reading day after day the hate posted on these articles, it is nice to see some objectivity. Good luck to both teams this weekend.
West Jordan Blue | 1:37 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
a few people said he doesnt do well under pressure and hall throws into double coverage. From what I have seen Max running the ball is a better thing. There are several times the pressure has been able to get to him and instead of scrambling for a few yards he would try forcing the football somewhere usually a INT. If everyone is covered in a man coverage then there is room to run. His decision making has been much better and him tucking and running instead of forcing a ball somewhere is a better decision to me, even if he doesnt slide. Just wrap up the ball and dont fumble.
Re: Ernest T. Bass | 3:05 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
That's a good point. . .

I don't know if he can hit harder than BYU's linebackers, that might be a bit of a stretch.

But he probably hits harder than Utah's linebackers.

What have they done all season? Those guys are a bunch of pussies. Don't they average 175 yards per game in rush defense?
Ernest T. Bass | 3:28 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I really don't know why they just don't give the Heisman Trophy to Maxine right now. It would save everyone a lot of time and money. Every sportswriter in America already knows that they are going to vote for Maxine anyway. So awesome, yet so humble.
AK Cougar | 6:35 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Good to get an update on the injury list. Sad to hear the Sorenson got hurt on his mission. Hope he heals well and heads back into the field soon.

RE: Mr. BYU above. You are giving way too much credit for Utah's offense against TCU. W will get his team ready and have a great game plan to follow. I hope it will be close, but think Utah may lay an egg (very large goose egg) this Saturday.
Re: Ernest T. Bass | 7:26 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I don't know, I'm pretty sure that Jordan Wynn is a better candidate since he got 82 passing yards against Wyoming.
Max | 8:08 p.m. Nov. 11, 2009
Y'all talk about Max like he is the incarnation of Steve Young, Ty Detmer and Jim McMahon all rolled into one.

You like to point out his gaudy statistics for games won and passing yardage and on, and on, and on, and on......

Anyhow, point being, Max has been the starting QB for a long time. Seems like he's been QB since the Clinton Administration (that's Bill and not Hillary).

Give just about any average DI QB and let them start for the better part of a decade like Hall has and they too will have gaudy stats to throw around.
Comparison between Wynn and Maxi | 6:59 a.m. Nov. 12, 2009

1) Senior Maxi has been losing ugly losses. Frosh Wynn has won ugly wins and will win a biggest one this Saturday.
2) Maxi want to take the hits because he knows BYU O-line can't protect him and if he throws...well the defense will pick it off. Wynn has O-line to protect and rather passes and avoid contacts.
3) Maxi is a good person. Wynn is a good person and a winner.
