Was Joseph Smith a gentleman in how he treated Emma when he brought young women into his home as wives or when he asked fellow priesthood leaders for their wives?

The spirit of the times was gentlemanly and he was in tune with those times. Joseph Smith was much more complicated then this simple explaination protrayed.

It is precisely because Joseph Smith was not always a gentleman that he had enemies.

For example, it astonishes me how easily men forget Joseph’s adultery against his wife, Emma, causing her and their children much pain.

For a good source on how the plural wives of Joseph felt, read “In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith,” by Todd Compton, a Mormon historian in good standing.
