soon enough a liberal will come along and ask why these mormons are more important than other people since they are mentioned
Brother's Keeper | 3:18 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
Shouldn't the headline read: "El Salvador flooding kills 130"? It doesn't matter what religion they were, nor does it make me care more that 8 were LDS. Violents deaths are always a tragedy.

Good call, Anonymous. It took an hour and two minutes, but they did it. Why did it mention that Mormons were killed? Probably because the readership for Deseret News consists of many who are Mormon and there may even be readers who know those who were killed. While it a person's religion doesn't make them more important to me (or to God), the mention of the religion of those who tragically died is relevant to the target audience.

The story is in the Moromon Times. If it were in the Stamp Collector magazine and said 8 members of the Stamp Collector guild were killed would anyone complain (well probably yes - but)? It is just about similar interests. I for one am curious, my son-in-law served a mission to El Salvador. Did he possibly know any of those members?? That's why it's interesting and news to some. Does it make it any more or less tragic? No.

Get off the high horse.
Sad story | 4:18 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
I agree it should say 130 killed and state later in the article 8 LDS were killed. The church is always quick to respond to major problems in the world with food, service, shelter, etc... Many religious haters bash us, but they don't realize what good religion does for the world too. Too bad the government doesn't know how to respond as quickly as the church in dire situations.

Brothers Keeper: Perhaps since the article was authored by the LDS Church News it was writing to its perceived audience base? Additionally, Deseret News typically shares Mormon stories? Does any of this surprise you?

Finally, the article carried via the link attached clearly references the tragedy from a broad standpoint first listing the overall destruction and relating the story to the audience LDS Church News serves "Mormons".

This is a tragedy regardless. What is your true intent here? The story or disagreement with the websites?

The Deseret News caters to an LDS audience. It is nice to be made aware when a fellow Saint(s) has passed on.

FYI, The LDS are probably the only religion organized enough to note or know when those of their own have died.
The others I am betting have no idea.
Church News | 4:25 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
The report is posted on the Church News Web site. The Church News reports on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other newspapers report on other victims of the flooding. The Church News reports on "the Mormon angle." Most likely, if another church's paper were doing a report, the impact of the flooding on that church's members would be a main factor in the report.

DN, thank you for the update. I too read the DN for a focus on my religion. I turn to the WSJ and any other of the zillions of news sources for general news (and they also have their own bias and specialty). I appreciate the Deseret News for their relevant focus.

Interesting line in which you wish to be identifed. Brothers keeper unless they are Mormon? We love you anyway and will come to your aid in an emergency no charge or pre condition.
Signed,
Your Brother's Keeper
c'mon man | 5:35 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
I know what you mean Brother's Keeper, the trend continues. I mean, why is it that the LDS church's website only has a meetinghouse locator for LDS buildings? That only shows that the LDS church cares about Mormon places of worship and detests meetinghouses of other faiths. (this is sarcasm of course)

Why are these mormons more important than other people since they are mentioned? That's it, that's the test. I guess I'm a liberal. I didn't think it was that easy to tell. Oh, well, I guess it's better than the alternative.
to the third commentator | 7:23 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
there are also readers such as myself, who are of Latin descent and NOT mormon and find that extra bit useless information.....it does feel like they are trying to make these 8 much more important
From Russia With Love | 10:51 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
We read this story in Irkutsk, Russia. The story tells that the Mormon church is helping victims of the flood regardless of religion. That what they are doing in this city. They helped an orphanage this year get new kitchen equipment, a Children's T. B. hospital get 75 new beds, and a rehabilitation center get new diagnostic equipment - all this year. No story was written. There are no Mormons in any of these facilities. The Mormons are just helping because they always do. Why do some Americans find that offensive? Why don't those who are critical of this story admit they must be upset with anything associated with these people of Christ? It's beginning to be cold here in Siberia, but not as cold as some of your opinions. I'm glad I'm here.
I have an idea..... | 11:14 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
This is said in totally brotherly love...

If it is distressing to have to read about Mormon people.. which for some of you seems to be a horror beyond words. THEN for you benifit.... and ours.. read another online newspaper that is not written for the Mormon People in mind.... see how easy that is???

Every story about the LDS Church is spun, selected, and filtered so it is all JUST ADVERTIZING FOR THE CHURCH! That is what's bothersome about it. EVERY story! EVERY time! The LDS Church has mastered the manipulation of the media in general, and the Deseret News in particular, to turn it into an extension of their marketing department! It is tiresome.
