I watched the vidio and it was amusing but disturbing how anybody could be worked over a game and how they can be unsportsmanlike. The suspension was the right thing

should start a college "Roller Derby!".......

The suspension was the right thing. Rakes, clips, retaliation, elbows, cleats up tackles etc. have all been a part of the game, an ugly part, since the beginning. Sad to see it creep into the women's game on such a large scale. However, the BYU team is not with out fault since they are coached to be a rough and tumble team. The referee also shares the blame for not controling the play of BOTH teams during the match. It was ugly and has no place in the sport. I challenge the coaches to bring back skill, speed and the tactical part of the game. Lady thugs have no place on the pitch.

I watched the video, and had a couple of thoughts.

First, the hair yanking incident and the one incident where she smacks the Y player in the face should have been straight red cards. No question there, and the refs should be ashamed that they let that sort of stuff occur.

Second, the rest of the actions of the player were really nothing out of the ordinary. One of the hard tackles could have received a yellow, and likely should have, but I can't see the rest of the plays warranting a card, and some of them wouldn't have even required calling a foul.

Take the elbow to the back incident (the first on the video). The Y player elbows her in the solar plexus (which can hurt quite a lot) and she retaliates with a forceful elbow to the back. A good ref would have a quick word to both, and tell them to KNOCK IT OFF! Other than that, the ref wouldn't call a thing.

It seems that, without the hair-yanking incident and the blows to the face, this never would have been noticed by anyone in the media.

Everybody loves a Villan. If I was a team in the Womens Pro Soccer League, I'd sign this chick up, to knock around those forwards.

I'm soooooooo tired of hearing that the BYU team wasn't without fault. I wish fans would think before saying things like that. Nothing justifies repeatedly kicking a player when she's down, punching a player in the kidney, punching a player in the throat, and finally violently dragging someone to the ground by her hair. Had those things occurred on the street, Ms. Lambert would undoubtedly be facing charges. Because she did them on a playing field, she's apparently going to get away with a suspension from her team. Where are the prosecutors on this one?

the video, maybe Mike Locksley should look into her joining his team to add some toughness to Lobo football.

I'm in London right now and they've been playing it on the BBC all day today. I couldn't believe it.

JKidd is right that without the hair pulling and the blows to the face this wouldn't have been noticed. But, uh, there was hairpulling--a possible whip-lash inducing take down by the head and neck--and blows to the face.

The rest just shows how those two egregious fouls weren't isolated, but were the result of consistent over-aggression or anger.

Crazy.

I do wonder where the other BYU players were. Not that I am advocating violence, but when someone attacks your team mate, you should have their back.
gw | 10:38 a.m. Nov. 10, 2009
Why was there no red card on the first punch?
Atrocious | 10:51 a.m. Nov. 10, 2009
No excuses! She alone should be disgraced over that game. Nothing justifies her!

It sickens me that some want to downplay her aggression as only reacting to BYU players, or how most of her fouls are not much different than what you would expect in a soccer match from both sides in any game. That isn't at issue. If your aggression escalates to pulling a girl down by her hair or punching someone in the face, then your actions set you apart. All of your fouls before that, were left too far unchecked by you, by your team, by your coach, and finally by the refs, but you are still more accountable for yourself over anyone else.

When all of those checks fail, it would be very easy for your opposition to want to sink to your level and rip you down by your hair and/or punch you in the face. I am very proud of the BYU girls for not doing anything that could even be considered equal retaliation. They are the last people who should have to be implicated with this girl's actions to any degree.

Lambert's aggressive play made soccer relevant for the first time since some women's American team won something and a player ran around the field in her sports bra.

I LOVED the MMA aspects of Lamberts play. And the BYU players showed some grit/dirt too... throwing elbows and giving frontal wedgies to opposing players. Great stuff.

What else is there to make a one to nil game interesting? As is, soccer is a boring third-world sport.

Allow more pads, gloves and much more physical contact and then watch the rating sky-rocket.

I believe Lambert made a public apology. I think we should accept that sheepishly turn away.
Anonymous | 11:49 a.m. Nov. 10, 2009
put her on the football team. the OSU guy just got off of his suspension for a far worse punch
Smootharch | 12:45 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
I would understand her apology where she said her emotions got the best of her, but this wasn't one isolated incident in the game. She did it over and over again. So her emotions got the best of her multiple times during the game? She is a thug, plain and simple. In my opinion, this is worse than the Oregon player who punched the Boise guy. In that instance, he was provoked and he retaliated. That is an instance where he lost his cool. When you act the way this girl did throughout the course of an entire game, this is a separate issue all together. I know she apologized, but I didn't find it sincere. You're sorry for being a thug?
to much | 1:10 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
Even her own school said there was no excuse for her behavior. C'mon stop trying to spin this like it was BYU's fault...ridiculous.
JKidd | 1:37 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
I stand by my argument that most of what happened was part of the game, and a legitimate part of the game. She did pull hair, and she did hit a player in the face, and for those she should have been sent off, but the rest of her actions were legitimate, and everyone who is adding up the infractions shows an ignorance about soccer, especially the claim by KC that she "repeatedly" kicked someone while they were down. That person was attempting to protect the ball while the ball was in play, and while it is borderline to do that while on the ground, it is perfectly legitimate to continue going after the ball (with your feet, since that's all you've got).

With the exception of the two plays mentioned above, her actions are not beyond the pale, and we shouldn't treat them as such. We have no idea whether or not she was angry when she took the other actions, so she may have just been aggressively playing (like she is supposed to). She should have been warned about the elbow to the back, and might have been called for fouls, but that's it.

I think we have already decided that the referee was out to lunch on this one.

not judge...everyone deserves a second chance and she is no different...the appology probably wasnt sincere just a routine thing whenever something like this happens...but she did appologize...so who are we to say what her feelings are...her actions were unacceptable...but give her a chance to show that she is truely sorry and that she truely can play the game of soccer with aggression and grit without endangering another player...i am a DIE HARD BYU fan...all sports from football to badminton...GO COUGARS!!! and the actions against the Cougs were terrible...but holy cow everyone...move on...forgive and FORGET...give her a suspension discipline...and tell her to take a nap and chill out...second chances are in order in my personal opinion!

Third world sport? It was invented in Europe and Europe still dominates the sport. See the Human Development Index (available online - even you can type). Europe is in nearly every measure of development more advanced than the USA. The GDP of the EU states is larger than the USA, we live longer, are better educated, have better infrastructure, attract more foreign investment, provide more foreign investment, have outpaced the US in patents brought to market since 1988, are physically more fit and have much better food to boot! Sorry chump, real football isn't a third world sport. Remember the images sent around the world after Katrina? Your third world conditions (at an American football stadium no less) were proved to the world! The EU provided food shipments to the survivors faster than your own government. Embarassing!

Good luck with that $1,300,000,000,000 debt. We'll be seeing who is third world before long!

I am a die-hard Cougar fan. I think it makes absolutely no sense seeing things like that happen on a female sports team, especially done to our Cougars team. I don't think she deserves a second chance. She went on a rampage, and that's her own fault. She knows better and it will be impossible to regain respect and gain forgiveness... EVER!!!
Refs | 4:03 p.m. Nov. 10, 2009
How could this have happened and no red card. This is not just an embarrsement of the player but the MWC officating crew that worked the game. Very bad

I showed this clip to my brother, who, as a freshman at BYU in 1982, was the starting goalkeeper for the men's soccer team. His only reaction was that this sort of thing happens ALL the time in collegiate soccer. He was just amazed that this was picked up on camera.

real quick: BYU and every women's soccer team has their thug players; if they don't then they don't win. Coaches look for and encourage thug players. Ghost players, those that have some soccer skill but are NOT aggressive on the field, are not given a second look by comp, ODP, H.S. or college coaches. If you haven't played the game then you don't know that fact. Coaches?
Re: Re: Finally watchable | 7:31 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
hey...you may be all those things...but we'll still be the ones running to your rescue once again when you cant defend yourself!!! :D cheers mate! USA! USA! USA!!!

Re: Re: Re: Finally watchable - the US is in debt up to its eyeballs and is bogged down in two wars. The US military is struggling to meet recruitment goals even when unemployment exceeds 10%. I don't think it will be in any position to 'defend' Europe any time soon.

By the way, the Soviets had the Nazi forces essentiallly broken before the US even entered the war. It isn't as if the US has really ever 'defended' Europe. Basic history classes folks!
