This is a great story, but I'm not quite sure why it is being reported in the Deseret News. Sorry.

Ok, so why is this news? There is a new bishop made throughout the church worldwide every week. I'm sure he is a good man but come one Deseret News.

Very good story idea. How about doing future articles on new bishops in Michigan? (when they do get appointed).

This was reported in the Lufkin Daily News a local paper. It's news if you are a non-member because the norm is to have paid clergy.

If a Local Newspaper thinks it's news, THEN IT IS NEWS at least to the local area that the newspaper serves.

Sure there's a lot of new Bishop's called. The Local Bishop is One of the Most Important jobs in the Church!! He spends countless extra hours doing Church Business and helping people with their personal problems. Besides that, the Bishop also works a normal job to earn the financal resources to take care of his family.

What's Wrong with giving CREDIT and Recognition to what is many times a job that goes unnoticed in this somewhat UNgrateful world we live in.

Thank You Deseret News for passing on a "Good News" Story that a Local Newspaper (outside of Utah) created!!!

This is a Human Interest Story for those who don't know how the LDS Church actually operates with its
unpaid leaders, etc.
general authorities get paid | 9:36 a.m. Nov. 10, 2009
Ehh - the church may not pay local part time leaders (Bishops and Stake Presidents etc.) but it certainly does pay those general authority leaders that do work full time in church work - just like other full time clergy in other churches. By the way, local volunteers in other churches don't get paid either and can spend huge amount of hours in their parishes.

To General Authorities get paid:

Yes, the do that is fact but not what you think. They get their flights, rent a cars, sometimes hotel rooms and other things reimbursed to them. They get a very nominal fee for some other things but other than that they are not paid what you think they are. You may ask, why are they paid for their flights, rent a cars, sometimes hotel rooms when bishops, stake presidents are not. The reason is that bishops and stake presidents don't generally have to fly to Asia to conduct the business of their unit. These units have a very small area that doesn't always encompass a lot of traveling. When they live in a geographical area where they have to drive great distances, fly into or whatever, they can and will be reimbursed for this. Our bishops do not charge for weddings, funerals or anything of that nature. Ask that of a Catholic priest, Methodist preacher or even a Baptist minister. All of these cost money in any of their churches for the Priest to conduct.

This is a great story on how the Church actually conducts it business.

Anonymous - Not everyone who reads this paper is from Utah. This is one place where we can find articles about the church in other parts of the country. It is nice to see something in a paper, especially in Texas where the state religion is Baptist that is positive about the Church.

General authorities get paid, but it's no cushy job.

I remember living in a small Utah town where the local newspaper reported who spoke in sacrament meeting, who were sustained in callings, who were the out of town visitors that Sunday in the ward.Well times have changed and that practice is long gone.I think DN was actually acknowledging that a community can and does recognize the church and how they function. The church is big on publicity and looking good in the media.Nothing wrong with that but it does offend some.

We love hearing news about Texans. We read the Deseret News online daily. Keep up the good work!
