Hey Sorenson do you think Oklahoma's 4 loss year could have anything to do with Bradford being out? Just wondering why it obvious to me but not mentioned by you.
Closer? | 9:31 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Let's see, Utah barely beats Air Force and Wyoming, a team BYU killed 52-0, and you think Utah will keep the TCU game closer, and it's played at TCU?

TCU 42 Utah 10

Funny that Cougar fans don't think that the Heisman Trophy winner wouldn't have made two points difference in the second half.

Re: Closer? @ 9:31 p.m.  | 10:27 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Two weeks ago BYU quit against TCU. When was the last time Utah quit when trailing in a game?

Utah may not win, but they will not quit and the spread will be closer than the BYU/TCU score.
ha ha | 10:46 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Sorenson ... you think Utah will keep the score closer ? hahahaha good one ! Utah's best win this year is against Air Force and they barely beat them at home. They will get destroyed at TCU. You think TCU might be overlooking Utah after last year ? hahaha

Thanks for keeping the Lambert fiasco in print. She was basically out of control throughout the game, not just one incident like the Florida Gator player.

Four things ought to happen:

-UNM coach gets reprimanded for allowing her player to endanger other players.

-The refs get fired for allowing her actions to continue all game long.

-MWC officials take a stronger stance on such situations.

-Lambert loses her scholarship unless/until she successfully complete an appropriate amount of community service or some other actions beyond sports.

Elizabeth Lambert is a hero.

Kassidy Shumway is an unethical athlete and Lambert was defending herself.

No one was complaining when Shumway gave Lauren Porter a concussion, were they?!?

I have no sympathy for Shumway.
Re: Howard S. | 5:39 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
And it's funny how people don't realize it was BYU who knocked Bradford out of the game. It wasn't some freaky accident as he walked out onto the field. BYU earned the win by doing that. The other teams have benefited since.
Spread | 5:56 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I'm a BYU fan....a realistic BYU fan. Utah will not get beat by TCU by a greater margin than TCU beat BYU by. Simple. Utah plays the big games much, much better than BYU does. It's in Texas, yes. But the game will be a good one. I'm anxious to watch it. It's great for the MWC and would really help the conference exposure moreso if TCU wins, which I believe they will. Would be cool to see Utah win though. Comparing AFA and Wyoming wins to the BYU win vs Wyoming is irrelevant. Go MWC!
What's up? | 6:18 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
NO WAY does it excuse Lambert's actions, but a close look shows that her actions follow a BYU's players yank at her shorts and a jab to her chest.
Ute fan in San Diego | 6:32 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
The Utes are going to face the toughest opponent in TCU. Unfortunately, TCU won't get the opportunity to play the TX or FL teams this year which may be even matchups.
Lambert will return | 7:05 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I am convinced that the "indefinite" suspension is a joke. The UNM coach hopes to get her reinstated as soon as the controversy blows over. This would be consistent for a coach who refused to pull Lambert during the game. UNM has already shown that violence is tolerated by suspending its head football coach for a single game after he attacked an assistant.

The MWC also carries a great deal of blame for the officiating and its failure to do anything about it after the match was over.
bigger punishment | 7:36 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Any punishment she gets is well deserved. She better not play next year. And it's just because someone's too nice she isn't being charged with something. She'd be right up there in an ESPN poll poll question about "Sports Loser of the Decade".
Levin | 7:53 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Didn't someone say that the lousy deal with the MTN is preventing any of our sports teams from getting national coverage?
Re: 5:39 a.m. | 7:55 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
"...BYU who knocked Bradford out of the game..."

So BYU's game plan is to knock opposing players out of the game?

Maybe Lambert was just following that BYU game plan.
Anonymous | 8:08 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
One might want to examine the game statistics before and after Bradford was "knocked out out of the game". You will find that BYU did just as well with him in the game as with him out. BYU earned that win so give it a break.
re: dry | 8:11 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
they could use someone like you over in Iran. You have that type of mentality. One, know one can figure out.
Lambert | 8:18 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Her punishment is appropriate. She does not deserve to play intercollegiate sports. The officials are partly to blame for not carding her earlier.
Anonymous | 8:19 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
The reason the game will be closer is because Utah has a much much much better defense than BYU. BYU's D doesn't consistently compete with top athletic programs. Utah does what they have to do, and they get ugly wins. BYU blows out the weak and loses to the athletes. The utes rise to the occasion and at least are in ever game they've played this year. They lost to Oregon by a TD. BYU wasn't even involved in the TCU game and Florida State is not a very good team (just way more athletic than BYU's slow pathetic D). TCU will win by ten points against the U. Not 38-7
to Re: 5:39 a.m. | 8:24 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Ever hear of a clean hit? Bradford's injury did not result in a penalty. Open your eyes, Lambert's actions were not clean hits.
Snide Remark | 9:03 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Mike, That was a snide remark from you about BYU. Are you Gordon Monson's cousin? I know you have Utah ties, but I always thought that ethics in journalism was important, even to sports writers who favor one team over another. Maybe you need to go work with Gordon on talk radio. There you can badmouth BYU all you want, because there are no ethics in talk radio. Anyone can be a jerk anytime they want to.
sports math? | 9:09 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
i love when people try to apply math to sports. so and so beat this team by 20 and you only beat them by 10 therefore we will beat you by 10. Show me one incidence where the difference in every stat from two games equalled the stats from the subsequent game.
Anonymous | 9:25 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I don't believe one word of Lambert's "sincere" apology. It was probably written by the athletic department's PR guru, and then Lambert read it to the media, the whole time inwardly grinning smugly about taking down all the players she did.
John | 10:00 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Lambert is my hero
Blount | 10:03 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Punch one Boise State FOOTBALL player and get suspended for the season. Lambert takes down 6 or 7 BYU SOCCER players and gets suspended for the off-season and maybe a couple of games? Her collegiate career should be over!!! She needs serious help! The UNM coaching staff / athletic director needs to be canned as well as the refs for not maintaining order and ensuring the safety of other players in that game. Despicable.
Re: Howard S. | 10:24 p.m. | 10:22 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Bradford would have made a difference, but so would having Unga. Much like the Ute post I saw the other day saying how Asiata would have made a difference in the games the Utes have struggled in. This game is called football for a reason, people get hurt and all the woulda, shoulda, coulda makes no difference because the game is played with players and they get hurt. Bradford had thrown for 97 yards and one touchdown, we could never predict exactly what Bradford being in might have done.
Re; What's Up? | 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
So I hope you don't throw a wad of paper at someone, then he decides to shoot your ugly mug with a gun. It's justifieable, right, since you initiated the exchange? Dude, if you saw the video clip, you'd realize that the elbow nudge could not justify such a harsh response.
UNLV | 10:45 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
"When was the last time Utah quit when trailing in a game?"

UNLV 27
Utah 0

Utah players were even accused of being afraid to tackle a UNLV runner, who, until the Utah game, had been mediocre.
Anonymous | 10:52 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Lambert is still a kid. She didn't try to permanemtly hurt anyone and the refs should have been on top of it more. Soccer is physical. Maybe suspend her for the first conference game or two.

Utah is not as good as BYU and will loose to the cougars. They match up better to TCU than BYU does and will keep it closer than the Cougs did vs. TCU. Utah might even stay ahead of the Cougars in the polls which is fine with me. The higher the utes are ranked, the better for BYU when they play. Hopefully BYU can beat AF as well.
re: snide remark | 11:47 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
So a comment like "Utah will do better against TCU than byu did" is considered a "snide remark" and it means the writter doesn't have ethics???

wow get over yourself. Maybe Sorenson is looking at the past to base his predictions on. Utah is the only team with a winning record against TCU since the Frogs joined the MWC - oh I hope that wasn't a "snide remark" towards your beloved coogs.

The fact is that under Whittingham, the Utes have stepped it up for the big games - go back a decade if you need more proof. The Ute's have the best record against BCS schools than any other non-BCS team and yes that includes your coogs. I guess that means I'm unethical too.

Go Utes!!!
Anonymous | 12:09 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
What was the score with tcu - AFA? oh ya it was the same margine as Utah- afa
Matt Connelly | 12:38 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Probably a little early to start mentioning the Utes as BCS busters, eh? Even if they beat TCU (not likely) they'd still have to beat BYU in Provo. Not going to happen.
Utah/BYU | 1:12 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I find it funny that cougar fans never learn to keep their mouths shut!

Last year, cougar fans for the most part were also POSITIVE that BYU would beat Utah. Guess what? It didn't happen, not even close. So, in my opinion, that gives the Utah fans the bragging rights until the game this year, especially sine they have a better record and a higher ranking this year.

Seriously, THINK.
BCS stinks | 1:39 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
This is why the BCS stinks. Utah will make a lot more money by losing this game and letting TCU be the BCS buster than by winning this game.
Jumbo Slice | 1:42 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Hey Sor, surprised you didn't whine and complain about the Yankees. That's 27 time World Champs - how do ya like that?
Punto for Punto | 1:47 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Sor is a bore!
bragging rights | 2:22 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
"Utah fans [have] the bragging rights until the game this year"

Just keep that in mind after the Utes lose to TCU and BYU this year and remind your Utah friends to "learn to to keep their mouths shut!"

Like that's ever going to happen

Utah fans couldn't keep their mouths shut for a single day after losing two of their last three to BYU.

btw

Utah only has the better record and higher ranking currently because the Utes haven't played TCU, yet.

Enjoy your precarious perch above the Cougars in the polls while it lasts because it'll all come crashing down on Saturday.
Lambert is dirty | 3:03 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Nobody's mentioned that Lambert's attacks came against the two stars of the BYU team (Kassidy Shumway and Carlee Payne--both named to the all-MWC tourney team). I'd say it really seems like there was a plan to play dirty and knock them out of the game. Coach Vela should have accepted some of the responsibility for leaving Lambert in there to do the dirty work.
re: Anonymous | 12:09 p.m. | 4:26 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Um ... the Air Force - TCU game was played at a 9 degree wind chill and Air Force scored right at the end of the game to make it appear closer than it really was. Utah was lucky to beat AF at home with perfect conditions.
J SMOOTH | 4:50 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Lambert rocks!!! BYU-overrated! BYU fans-uberannoying!!! Every year UTAH out performs and out classes the kitties!!!
AK Cougar | 5:19 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Sorensen you are spot on about the MWC strength against the other conferences. The Big 12 is easily the Big 2 with pushovers for the other 10. Even the Big Easy this year is suspect with a high ranked team, mid rank and 2 teams that just got in.

Your predictions for this weeks TCU vs Utah could be much more simplified. Utah will lose.

It will be the game to see this week though.

Go Cougars, Go Utes, Go TCU.

I have a solution (maybe short term, but a solution nevertheless), regarding the BCS dilemma.

1. One of the BCS conferences could offer TCU a spot in their conference. That would solve one of the problems of BCS buster teams.

2. The Mountain West conference offers Boise State a spot in their conference to take TCU's place.

3. The BCS then offers the Mountain West conference BBCS status and adds another bowl game to the BCS.

Problem solved - at least for the forseeable future.

Mr. Sorenson,

Regarding Spikes, you missed the perfect opportunity to use the old saying, "It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye."
RE:bragging rights | 5:44 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
even if the utes lose to TCU and drop below BYU in the rankings it wont matter. Once Utah destroys the very uncordinate and unathletic BYU team, they will jump ahead of them again. BYU wont even be in the rankings.

What going on at the Univ of New Mexico. What is in the water? A few weeks back the country heard that their new football coach hit his assistant coach in the face and was sanctioned (a slap on the wrist). Now, the behavior has reared it's ugly head in a soccer game aka Lambert...with fists, elbow's, and a pony tail take down! I suggest stronger sanctions against this type of behavior wheather it be a coach or player. Lastly, the Univ of New Mexico needs to hire a public relations firm to calm the fears parents might have in sending their little sweethearts to UNM...
Too Personal | 8:24 a.m. Nov. 10, 2009
I think this BYU/Utah rivalry is getting way too personal. Fans think with emotion rather than reason. Reading these comments is embarrassing. BYU fans love their team too much and Utah fans hate BYU more than they love their own team. Utah and BYU are both very good teams and our state is lucky that these two programs are having such good success. A rivalry is no fun when one program is mediocre. TCU will beat Utah this week (who cares what the margin is) and BYU and Utah will play for second place. I hope the rivalry game is a good one like it usually is.
