I see a great defeat in the Senate for socialized sick medicine. And a great defeat to liberals who lie about the painful cost of bloated programs sponsored by bloated egos in a bloated government.

IT WILL PASS AS SURE AS THE SUN COMES UP IN THE MORNING. OBAMA IS JUST STARTING TO MAKE HIS MOVES. I BET YOU WISH HE WENT ON VACATION FULL TIME LIKE GEORGE BUSH DID WHEN HE WAS PRESIDENT IN HIS OWN MIND. SIT BACK AND RELAX, THE NEXT 7 YEARS WILL JUST FLY BY AS OBAMA CLEANS UP THE MESS GEORGE MADE.
GOD BLESS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Call your Senators today and insist they defeat this bill! Insist the government stop their insane spending of money we don't have!

Founding Fathers. I sure hope Obama does not betray them.
Trap! | 11:49 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
This so called healthcare bill is nothing but a trap waiting to be sprung on the taxpayers of America! It will end up just like Medicare and Medicaid: bankrupt, inefficient, full of corruption and mismanagement! Like all entitlements it offers a morsel of "free" cheese to ignorant rats and humans who believe they will be the exceptions!
Let's imagine | 11:57 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Let's imagine an man comes to your door and tells you he has an amazing health insurance program for you! You invite him in and listen to his speal which is:
#1: Your neighbor will be forced to pay for your healthcare.
#2: You have no choice, you have to do what the salesman says, go to the doctor he says and accept his decisions.
#3: You cannot read the policy, you simply have to trust him on the details.
Anyone who has an ounce of personal integrity would show this bum the door! Tell your Senator to show the door to this stupid, finanically irresponsible and dictatorial scheme of so called government health care!

TIME FOR CHANGE IN AMERICA.

I have a family here in America....

They are so good to me.....

RISING HEALTHCARE COSTS MAKE IT DIFFICULT....

to have families.

Fam’lies can be Happy....

When they are healthy!

That is why we need affordable healthcare,

so everyone can have families.

And avoid Bankruptcy.

Outrageous Healthcare bills are the #1 cause of bankruptcy and Utah is #1 state in Bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy is a HUGE CAUSE of Divorce in America which includes UTAH that destroys families.

We should be Christliek and follow the parable of the good samaritan and provide healthcare to those who cannot afford the outrageous costs..
Very dangerous | 12:15 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Folks, this is very dangerous "game" we are playing here, allowing the government this much power over your wallets and your healthcare! Very, very dangerous! Americans have always been free of government tyranny! But Obama wants to change all that and this is another calculated step for him to accomplish his dream! FREEDOM!!!!!
Senators! | 12:51 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Don't bother reading the actual bill, just trust the Democrats!
Gemma, UK | 1:43 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I am a Brit and I am definitely not liberal and I have never understood you Americans' distaste for universal, tax-funded healthcare. I can't even begin to imagine having to budget for medical treatment. If I need to see a doctor I see a doctor. If I have an illness or an accident I will be treated. When I had babies I was cared for. At no point were large conglomerate businesses questioning the validity of my need, nor have any been benefitting from my good health. If at any point I am unsatisfied with my treatment through the National Health Service or if I desire frivalous optional procedures I have the option of paying for prvate care. That hasn't happened so far.
And do I ever worry that my taxes are being spent healing sick people? Until I read it here that hadn't even occurred to me. I'm not perfect but I'm a heck of a lot less petty than that!
Good news, sort of. | 3:03 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Abortion is not an issue with this plan. Abortions are an individuals choice they have to live with and not for some outsider to restrict medical care, including abortions. To exclude abortions will only drive those that want them in to the black market to get them. This is a ridiculous reason to debate.

The real debate is that it is not economically wise to take billions to trillions of dollars out of the economy and peoples pockets to pay for useless insurance.

The real criminals in health care are the monopolies running hospitals, doctors, clinics with fraudulent billing to insurance. If you are upset about health care cost, debate the cost with hospitals and doctors, that's individuals responsibility.

The other reason costs have escalated are the individuals who do not plan their families needs in medical care. The big screen TV seems more important than their families health and saving money to care for them. People, even the poor would rather spend hundreds of dollars per child for Christmas toys than take care of their families health.

And don't be fooled by thinking someone else will pay this government insurance plan, you are the someone else.

To all decent Utahns who know how to use lower case letters and full sentences without hard returns every five words:

The defeat of this bill in the Senate will depend on every single GOP senator. It is likely that there may be a Democrat or two that will oppose the bill. But if every Democrat/independent voted yes and every Republican voted no, then the Republicans would fall one vote short of the 41 needed to defeat cloture. Every single Republican senator will be crucial to winning this battle.

Let's show Sen. Bennett our appreciation for his crucial role in this and numerous other battles for the future of our country over his 16 years of conservative leadership in the Senate by not being so daft as to vote him out in favor of some newbie with no experience, no leverage, no committee chairmanships, and no seniority. That would be a great way to minimize Republican influence in Congress at a time when we need all the influence we can get.
Helga | 6:25 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Yes we need Health Insurance for all. But it has to be thought through before the try to push something like this on everybody with an outrages cost, that would Bankrupt the USA. This Democrats need to start using there Brains, instead of seatting on them. President Obama is to POWER Hungry to listen to the People. So where is our Freedom our Forfathers fought so hard to get for all of us.
lost in DC | 7:09 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
it's interesting that restrictions on abortion is what finally swung the vote in favor of the bill passing. BO, queen nancy, and many of the strident left said the bill would not allow abortions.

So why did they fight so hard against the language resticting abortion? Because they knew the bill will allow indirect federal funding for abortion and they wanted it. THEY LIED!!!!

The article says those with private health insurance will not see a change. BULL!!!! We'll see our taxes skyrocket, and when our employers see that it will be cheaper to pay the fine than provide insurance, we will be forced into the government program.

Again, they see that indirectly we will all be forced into the single payor system, which they denied would happen. Again, THEY LIED!!!!
Listen up Christians | 7:23 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Christ approves of being volunteering to donate their money to help the poor. I do not believe that Christ believes in us being FORCED to take care of the poor. THE PLAN OF FORCING PEOPLE TO BE GOOD WAS SATAN'S PLAN!

So again in Recap:

Giving freely = Christlike

Being forced to give = Devil's plan.

Morover think of after Christ came to Nephites. It said there were no poor among them. Do you think it was because there was a government taking all of their excess money and giving it to the poor? No it was because those that were more wealthy through their thrift or industry could and did choose to give their excess to the poor therefore eventually there came to be NO POOR AMONG THEM.

Under this system capitalism thrived, the poor were taken care of, and charity was allowed to happen.

What is happening right now is set to stifle capitalism and force us to give of us excess. Forcing people to do the right thing never ever generates a better society.

Okay liberals....continue your rants and raves now.
kitchy | 7:23 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I do not want my tax money paying for an abortion. Period! Let that be one of the things the Brit says can be done and the individual pay outside of the health plan if they deem it necessary. Of course, exceptions can be made for the health of the mother or in cases of incest or rape. I don't think many people realize that nothing is free and like the man said, if it is offered as free, don't buy that story. Government is trying to get more power over the American people and this is a good way to do that. Think people, think! Don't just go with what looks good on their commercials. Nothing is free!!!!

Please senate, sink this train wreck.
RE: Gemma in UK | 8:26 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Sorry, but you just don't understand. I am a Canadian that lives in the States. I too was under the delusion that universal health care was a good thing when I was young. But since I have lived in the States for the last 20 years I have realized the following:

1) 95% of innovation comes from the US Medical System
2) Universal Health Care has no incentive to innovate
3) Universal Health Care fosters an "Entitlement" mentality that says the govt should do everything for you.
4) Socialism is the root of all evil

My friend's mom in Alberta had to wait almost 2 years for an MRI on her let. Then another year to get the surgery.

Sorry, but Universal Health Care is NOT the way to go. It puts your trust in the government that has proven to be the most inefficient group I can imagine to run anything.

Govt steals from the funds put aside for projects and spends those funds for other projects.

Medicare is broke. Now they want all of us to go on medicare.

Thank heavens the Senate will kill this one.

Yes! Sink Away! We won't have any "change" left if this thing passes
Cats | 8:34 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
@ Gemma UK: I have NEVER known ANY American who had healthcare in the UK who didn't think it was the WORST they had ever seen. (I am saying this as a person who LOVES England.)

I hope and believe the Senate has a few grownups that realize they are under a moral obligation NOT to bankrupt this country.

We are not Europe. We are the shining beacon for the world. We need to continue to be that beacon.

FREEDOM, OPPORTUNITY AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ARE WHAT WE STAND FOR.

This bill will be dead on arrival in the Senate.
Strangling to Prosperity? | 8:49 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Democrats historically try to "Strangle" small business into prosperity.

Dems say 98% of small business will not be affected by this bill. What they miss is this:

Small Business would have an ADDITIONAL NEW TAX in the form of a 5.4% PENALTY on them if they don't offer health insurance to employees.

Small Business creates 70% of jobs.

In this economy any small business that is still in business could NOT survive with new government mandates to pay for health insurance.

So if you force Small Business to cover Health Insurance, many would either go out of business, or not create jobs.

If they go out of business, this would INCREASE the already 10.2% Unemployment rate.

Again, a classic example of how the Dems in Congress want to make those "evil" rich people (ie small businesses) and strangle them into prosperity? They want to spend YOUR money to make them feel better about helping the "poor."

They always turn to socialized solutions instead of fostering the free market upon which our country is built.

Margaret Thatcher: "The only problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of someone else's money"

RE: Gemma, UK | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Have you ever noticed how bad people's teeth are in the UK?

I have rarely met a Brit with straight teeth.

WHY? Because they have socialized medicine / dental system.

Why would we want our medical system to be as "efficient" as your dental system

No thanks.
First to stand in line: | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
All the people crying the most about free health coverage will be the first ones standing in line to get treatment. You know the people, the same people that feed their kids at Sams Club every day on free samples. And here you all are, biting the hand that will feed you before you get fed. At least a dog has more brains, and waits to get fed before snapping. Utah, a ship of fools.
Entitlement | 9:14 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
The problem with Socialized Medicine is the Entitlement mentality. Whenever a population has everything taken care of for them by the government, that population is headed for disaster.

The UK and Canada has struggled under the shackles of socialism for over 60 years.

The trigger in both cases was Universal Health Care. As soon as that was passed, it spelled the Death of Conservatism in both countries.

You can't recover from this government take over. Every election from then on is not if you want conservatism or liberalism, but which one can run the already socialized system better.

Once you make the deal with the devil (socialism) you can never fully recover.

We have become so open minded that our brains are falling out.

God Help us.
Pagan | 9:15 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
120 Americans die every day due to unafordable healthcare.

That's not some 3rd world country. Thats here. America

The average family is 5 people. So, the average is that 24 families die everyday because thay cannot afford they're healthcare bills.

Last year 50% of all bankrupcies in America were due to medical bills.

Healthcare premuims, as they stand now, will go up more than 100% in the next 6-10years.

Please tell me how another option is bad for us. Please tell me how things are ok now.

We cannot wait. We must change this now.
Gimme a break | 9:26 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
#1 We can't afford our current system with insurance premiums expected to rise 100% in the next 10 yrs and more businesses dropping health insurance for their employees.

#2 The Republican plan covered a "whopping" 3 million and didn't even deal with pre-existing conditions. What a joke.

#3 The public option will only be available to those who have to buy individual plans and is only one option someone may choose, along with many options to buy from private insurers.

#4 The bill was available on-line 72 hrs before the vote.

The healthcare bill doesn't even come close to "socialized" medicine. It continues the same system with private insurance companies albeit a few more regulations.

@ First to Stand in Line: I have a really important question for you.....HUH?
re: Pagan | 9:58 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Have you wondered what makes health coverage so expensive in the first place? Malpractice insurance for doctors (from the threat of greedy trial lawyers), government regulations on insurance providers, treatment of illegal aliens and other system abusers, etc. The real solution is to let the free market sort everything out, and making it a lot more difficult to sue for malpractice, not spend, spend, spend!

How effectively has the government ran Medicaid, Medicare, the Postal Service, Amtrak, and any other service that could be provided by the free market? Answer: into the ground. I don't want my healthcare to be run the same way.
Gemma, UK | 10:14 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Entitlement - "The UK and Canada has struggled under the shackles of socialism for over 60 years."

I realise it is against the American mindset to have any awareness of what goes on in the rest of the world, and it might be arrogant of me to expect that you might know a little British history, but since you brought it up...

It is always amusing when Americans talk about socialism. From someone who does know what socialism is (on account of the undemocratic socialist European superstate breathing down our necks) - Have you ever heard of a woman called Margaret Thatcher? That famed socialist leader who with her successor governed our country for 18 consecutive years.
Gemma, UK | 10:16 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
"120 Americans die every day due to unafordable healthcare."

But Pagan, at least their teeth are straight - let's not lose sight of what is important!
re: re: gemma in uk | 10:19 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Is right. however, something has to change about the way people are treated and covered under the current system. I am a little tired by my wife's doctor trying to peddle a corporate pharmaceutical's newest drug at her simply because he gets something from it, regardless that it did not help her. You doctors are snakes, just like lawyers. You worry more about your income and next golf game than your patients. You make me sick!
Pagan | 10:23 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
'Have you wondered what makes health coverage so expensive in the first place?'

@ 958a.

The 400% profit healthcare companies have recieved over the last 7yrs?

Oh, wait the 13 million dollars per year the top healthcare CEO's make.

Oh, I know! It's the constant decline of healthcare coverage we recieve year after year.

Look at your healthcare for this year. Compare it to last year.

Do you have more coverage or less?

Oh, and people are very much afraid of anything happening to medicare. That is how 'badly' the goverment has run it.

Because people realize, if medicare goes, thousands will die as they will not be able to afford to live.
Liberals mindset.... | 10:31 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Why wouldn't this new plan work? I mean, look how amazingly successful Medicaid, Medicare, and more recently the $787 billion stimulus plans have been. Inflation is not real, its ok if we spend $1.2 trillion on this thing, it will work out somehow.
Wrong Focus | 10:32 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Health care reform is needed, but gov't has its eyes on the wrong thing. My spouse recently had surgery with a one night stay in the hospital. The hospital bill alone was $22,000. Contractual adjustments with my insurance reduced the bill to under $3,000. Why can't the hospital just bill $3,000 in the first place? An 80% markup on services/supplies? That's what's wrong with the health system.
Wrong Focus | 10:35 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Sorry, make that 800% markup

Gemma: I'm assuming your remarks about Margaret Thatcher being a socialist are sarcastic. She was, in fact, a road warrior against socialism. It was her leadership that kept the UK from going over a socialist cliff. I'm a great admirorer of Margaret Thatcher and she would be horrified to have anyone refer to her as a socialist. Socialism is a blight on the world. It always has been and it always will be. I truly love England, but I pray we don't make the same mistakes in this country.

'Inflation is not real, its ok if we spend $1.2 trillion on this thing, it will work out somehow.'

Let me put the conservative spin on this.

Death is not real, its ok if we loose thousands of Americans on private health insurance, the private sector will work out somehow.

Just like wall street!
CougarKeith | 11:06 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
If healthcare passes anywhere near the simple ideal of what Barack Husein Obama wants, WE ARE IN SEVERE TROUBLE! If we just made it so Insurance companies can sell to anyone and customers can buy across state lines, you will see premiums take a marked decline! Healthcare COSTS will drop slightly until TORT REFORM is put in place, and hang all the ambulance chaser LAWYERS!!! This is the problem! They get 33% of what they get you, sometimes 40-50%!!! That is fair? They get rich off of you suing insurance companies, and insurance companies raise rates, and charge monstrous malpractice premiums in order to make a profit, it happens to be WHY THEY ARE IN BUSINESS! HEALTH CARE is NOT THE PROBLEM! It's coverage, and it's malpractice and it's LAWYERs! When you do something about that I AM INTERESTED IN REFORM, until then, leave Medicare, and my awesome insurance coverage ALONE!!!
Emjay | 11:09 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
To Gemma: Your remark about Americans accepting UK health care free and griping about it was truly silly. It is completely beside the point. These people just happen to be in the UK and they get some medical care while there. The point is that the care there is very substandard compared to US medical care. I don't know of any American who's had medical care there who wouldn't agree with that. My husband lived in the UK for two years and couldn't believe how bad the medical care was. I'm sorry to say it, but it just is the truth.

Americans have the best medical care in the world. It is too expensive and we need law suit reform and competition promoting reforms. We don't need a government, socialistic take over of health care. It is UNAMERICAN.

"The Senate is not likely to jump ahead this week on health care. Reid will keep meeting with senators to see if he can work out a political formula that will give him not only the 60 votes needed to begin debate, but the 60 needed to shut off discussion and bring the bill to a final vote."

This is not true since only 51 votes are needed to invoke the nuclear option and overcome a filibuster but some Senators are cowards and are afraid to do whatever is necessary to save American lives from murderers and their representatives.

They need to do the right thing regardless of the political consequences since American lives are on the line and innocent men, women and children are being murdered by voters who oppose health care reform. So it is time to step up to the plate and to challenge these murderers to a fight. Let's see how they like it when we ram the bill through the U.S. Senate.

Another option is to use 51 or more votes to censure Republicans and to have the Sergeant at Arms evict them from the floor of the U.S. Senate
