What a lovely, extraordinary reminder of important matters. I wonder where I can fine a poppy to wear. Although some recent conflicts have been more ambiguous than the two world wars, those who serve our country and either make it home or don't are heroes and should be honored on Veterans Day.

Great article. We have so much to be grateful for.
We must teach our young to REMEMBER those who have gone before us as well as those who now are willing and serving our country. Thank you!

I love your columns and read them weekly for their humor and insight on the mundane aspects of daily life. However, for me, today, this was perfect. Well-written and well thought out. Thank you so much. And thanks to those who serve our country.

Loved this article. Expresses so many sentiments I relate to both in experience and the conclusions drawn. Thank God for our military personnel and their families and the great government that supports freedom for all ALL AROUND THE WORLD!!

Thanks so much, Ann, for the reminder of the sacrifices of so many. I had totally forgotten about the paper poppies that used to be worn. Thank you.

Beautiful essay, Ann. My father-in-law came in on Utah Beach 24 hours after the first onslaught. He never talked much about it, but when the 50th anniversary of D-Day was broadcast on TV, I looked over and tears were streaming down his face. The black and white film footage was showing the troops coming on the beach. He just said," It didn't look like that. The water was blood red." , even 24 hours after the beginning. His company came into Buchenwald the day after it was liberated, and then he went through the Battle of the Bulge. He could never get rid of the fungus in his toenails after that. A humble man of 5' 6", who came back from the war and learned to lay linoleum and carpet the rest of his life, but a soldier hero for all of America and the world. Thank you for your words honoring him and all those who came home, but especially those who didn't.

wonderful column. my daughter, living in Scotland, told me that the Mormons there join with everyone else on Remembrance Sunday, wearing the poppies and honoring the dead.

A sweet and poignant column of great worth. I've been to those beaches several time with students and family and have seen the wonderful documentary on the huge movie screen in the Caen Memorial.
The American Cemetery in Normandie is so beautiful and moving in its homage to the youth of America who gave their lives that others might live in freedom.
Thank you for your thoughts. God bless you. Que Dieu vous benisse...from Ferney-Voltaire France.
