5A high school volleyball championship: Vikings sweep Knights
33 comments | Read story
In regards to the volleyball team there were many doubters of this year's Lone Peak program, probably even among their own circle, whether this team could reach the finals or even beat Taylorsville in the first round. They beat Taylorsville, the only Utah team to beat PG this year, they beat Northridge the #1 team from Region One and they beat Brighton, the #2 team from their region that beat them twice during the year. Beating Pleasant Grove this year was a tough task. The Vikings were talented and played an outstanding match in the championship with great hitting and spectacular defense.
For LP, it was one of Coach Meyer's best coaching jobs and great season and tournament girls! Again, you proved many doubters wrong and came home with another trophy. Seven straight trips to the state championship game is a great accomplishment for any program in any sport for any coach.
Again, the Vikings deserve all the praises on a great season and tournament.
PG had a great season. They are a super talented team, and it was fun to watch them. It's good that those girls finally got one, after being together for so long.
Congrats to both teams!
Seven straight years in the finals. Five of them in 5a is not to shabby. You girls rock and don't let anyone take your season acomplishments away from you. PG played amazing last night best I've seen them play. It was their tournament to win or loose. They made very few errors and had great defense. Job well done on both sides of the net.
Way to get it done!!
PG great match. Great Season. Well Deserved. Mendivil was a phenom!
On the other hand Coach Meyer, who for some insane stupid reason you want to criticize, helped guide her team to the finals as the lower seeded team in every single match of the tournament. She has also guided the Knights to seven straight championship games, five in the 5-A which has never been done at the large school level. I will grant you that LP was dazed in games one and two, but when the Knights raised their level of play in the third game that was the most amazing volleyball I've personally seen. PG was the better team last night and the best team in the state all season. Coach Meyer should have nothing to prove to her critics. Her staff is excellent and the girls our top notch.
We love you Deanna! Power To The Peak!!!
If you didn't see it, you missed a great championship match.
On the other hand, Meyer is certainly in control of the female athletes at that school. Their basketball coach can't get the best athletes to join his squad. Anyone know why the twins don't play hoops?
Same with PG. Could you imagine if all those kids played basketball? Or soccer? PG could win more state titles with all those girls playing other sports! Put Hamson in at GOALIE!!! Can you say SHUT OUT!!
Great Job Ladies you rock!
2) It is not Coach Meyer's job to get her girls to play basketball. That is the basketball coach's job to get girls to play basketball and that is the decision of the student athlete and the parents.
3) Several of the volleyball players as noted above actually play basketball. I think Marquelle Funk plays basketball, for example, and Whitney Johnson, who I believe would be best characterized as a basketball player who plays volleyball if you get my jist. Certainly Funk is better known for basketball but missed pretty much the entire season because of a basketball injury from summer basketball.
3) Before Meyer's arrival the volleyball program was pathetic. I mean absolutely pathetic! It won maybe 2-3 games over the two or three years before her arrival, no state appearances. The girl's basketball team led by the great Shauna Kay, actually had won 2-3 state titles. The situation for her was much worse than what it is for Coach Flood. With some good help from dedicated club coaches Coach Meyer built the volleyball program. But she didn't inherit a good situation, she built her program.
All large schools have conflicts between their volleyball and basketball programs, both sports demand a lot of extra time and that extra time is often in direct conflict. But the situation that exists at LP and PG is no different than any other school.
FYI--Both PG and LP have good athletes but so do a lot of schools (or so their parents claim). Both coaches deserve praises for building and/or cultivating top level programs.
1) Prior to Meyer's arrival ten years ago, the school did not qualify for the state tournament and hadn't even won more than three games in a season.
2) Meyer's teams have placed in state (the top 8) in eight of her ten years including seven state trips to the state finals and four championships.
3) Prior to Meyer's arrival the girl's basketball program had won back to back state titles.
If as LP is right LP is so full of athletes that anyone can coach them to the success they have seen the past few years, then I ask, why haven't the other coaches at Lone Peak been in the state finals seven years straight, or won four titles in those seven years? (And they're other great coaches at LP).
It is ridiculous to think that even with great athletes that any school could have this level of success without great and consistent coaching. Other schools have resources and quality athletes. Other schools are trying hard to win as well.
Unfortunately, Meyer perhaps has become a victim of her success and outlandish expectations.
There are a lot of great athletes in this state that seem to love volleyball.
Did Funk play varsity volleyball as a sophomore? I don't remember her ever getting into games if she did.
Returning girls and JV girls coming up next year, remember that feeling and work like crazy to repeat.
