Good job PG. Congrats. We love you Lone Peak. LP Seniors thanks for the memories, what a great ride, you girls are awesome. LP Coaching Staff rocks!

Deseret News: Great job on the pictures? Generally, you may want to show pictures of both teams. NICE, NOT!

Lone Peak played as good as they could. They beat a really good Brighton team who could have beat team. And no one would stand a chance against PG has the most talent by a long shot and this year they did not let the state championship slip by them.

Not a great weekend for LP? What are you talking about? 2nd place in the STATE championship match isn't a good weekend? Give me a break!
Re:weekend | 10:02 a.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Are you insane! LP had a great weekend. They were the three seed coming in beat three very good teams. Worked hard and ended up in the finals for the seventh straight year. So they lost to a very talented PG team. Who I might add played the best I've seen them play this year. They had very few errors and defense was spot on. LP did a great job. And my money is on them being there again! Way to go LP you were a class act and have nothing to be ashamed of!
Coach Meyer Fan | 11:10 a.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Well, maybe it wasn't a good weekend for the football team but finishing second in volleyball to a great team like Pleasant Grove is nothing to be ashamed of.

In regards to the volleyball team there were many doubters of this year's Lone Peak program, probably even among their own circle, whether this team could reach the finals or even beat Taylorsville in the first round. They beat Taylorsville, the only Utah team to beat PG this year, they beat Northridge the #1 team from Region One and they beat Brighton, the #2 team from their region that beat them twice during the year. Beating Pleasant Grove this year was a tough task. The Vikings were talented and played an outstanding match in the championship with great hitting and spectacular defense.

For LP, it was one of Coach Meyer's best coaching jobs and great season and tournament girls! Again, you proved many doubters wrong and came home with another trophy. Seven straight trips to the state championship game is a great accomplishment for any program in any sport for any coach.

Again, the Vikings deserve all the praises on a great season and tournament.

First I must say congrats to Coach Meyer. She did an amazing job getting her team to the finals! 7 years in a row is an amazing feat. This just proves that Lone Peak doesn't have rebuilding seasons, just reloading, and in my opinion, this is a product of great coaching. She just keeps losing seniors, and keeps putting together amazing teams, so kudos!

PG had a great season. They are a super talented team, and it was fun to watch them. It's good that those girls finally got one, after being together for so long.

Congrats to both teams!
Even for the football team | 11:58 a.m. Nov. 8, 2009
that lost to Hunter in four OT's will look back at that and say they were involved in one of the most epic football games ever played. For the volleyball team they took second place in state and lost to a great team. There is no shame in that. I would say it was a great weekend for Lone Peak athletics, even if the ultimate goal was not achieved.
Re weekend | 12:13 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Are you insane. What exactly is your beef? Lp had a great season. Those girls worked hard and became better players and a much better team from beginning to end do to their work ethic and a staff that cares and motivates them acheive.

Seven straight years in the finals. Five of them in 5a is not to shabby. You girls rock and don't let anyone take your season acomplishments away from you. PG played amazing last night best I've seen them play. It was their tournament to win or loose. They made very few errors and had great defense. Job well done on both sides of the net.
pg | 12:34 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
nice job Vikings!

Way to get it done!!
PG WAS AMAZING | 2:44 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
PG was incredible last night. It may have been one of the most fun games I have witnessed. They had LP running around with their heads cut off most of the night. Their offense was hitting so hard and placing so well that LP was diving into cheerleaders, their own bench, and into the fans. LP was overmatched by a long shot. I didn't see very many changes by Meyer. I thought the Johnston kid should have had more opportunities/touches. They didn't use her very well. Their hitters were not looking for placement. Why even try to hit through or over the 6'6 kid from PG? Not smart coaching. It almost looked like the male assistant was trying to say to much in time outs. Unorganized all night. I do agree with someone above, LP will just reload!

PG great match. Great Season. Well Deserved. Mendivil was a phenom!
Re: PG was amazing | 4:27 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
You are right on one thing, PG is amazing and played amazing last night. They were the better team with much more talent, size and experience. I guess Meyer could have tried to get Johnson more touches or whatever but let's get serious, would it have mattered much?

On the other hand Coach Meyer, who for some insane stupid reason you want to criticize, helped guide her team to the finals as the lower seeded team in every single match of the tournament. She has also guided the Knights to seven straight championship games, five in the 5-A which has never been done at the large school level. I will grant you that LP was dazed in games one and two, but when the Knights raised their level of play in the third game that was the most amazing volleyball I've personally seen. PG was the better team last night and the best team in the state all season. Coach Meyer should have nothing to prove to her critics. Her staff is excellent and the girls our top notch.
region 1  | 4:32 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Region 1 sucks... what is it going to take to get good coaching and a winning tradition up north? Even with great talent, they can’t win. Embarrassing…
Anonymous | 5:14 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
I was expecting much more talent from region 1 but they honestly weren't that great. Obviously region 4 had all the talent and then add bingham in there. There was a huge gap from those 4 teams to the rest of the teams. And LP didn't even raise their play that much in game 3, PG just had a lot of errors.
Good job PG! | 6:01 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Lone Peak fan here wanting to give props to the vikings. They were dominant all season long and once again in the state tournament. The Mendivil girl is something special. I think I heard she is going to BYU but can some one confirm that? I sure hope she is!

mendivil is going to arizona state. Hamson and dahl are BYU

Congrats to all of the coaches, staff, teams, parents, vb supporters, etc. This was a great season for all involved! LP's 7th straight time to the state finals is such an accomplishment. Be proud, you had a GREAT season.

We love you Deanna! Power To The Peak!!!

I have been in high coaching since 1963. I have seen many state tournaments in VB, FB, and BB. The matchup between PG and LP was awesome. Both teams came to play and both left it all on the court. There were tears of disappointment on the LP side, but they were not tears of defeat. Two teams that if they played again--flip a coin for the result.
If you didn't see it, you missed a great championship match.
Great Match! | 10:08 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
PG won in an incredible display of power and defense. This year would not have been the year that a coin could have been flipped for a different result. This was the 3rd time this year that PG won in the PG/LP match-up. I have been watching these two teams play each other for a long time, and it's always a great match!
PG | 12:00 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I am a PG fan and wanted to congratulate the girls on a State championship! I am also a huge volleyball fan and love the LP and PG matches each season. I know I will always see some awesome volleyball plus there is always that rivarly excitement going on. Congrats to LP for a great season, as well as Brighton! Way to represent Region 4 ladies!! :]
LP | 1:06 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
LP should be at the state tournament every year competing for state titles. I don't care who the coach is. That school has more talent and good athletes than anywhere in the state.

On the other hand, Meyer is certainly in control of the female athletes at that school. Their basketball coach can't get the best athletes to join his squad. Anyone know why the twins don't play hoops?

Same with PG. Could you imagine if all those kids played basketball? Or soccer? PG could win more state titles with all those girls playing other sports! Put Hamson in at GOALIE!!! Can you say SHUT OUT!!
RE: LP | 9:31 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
LP has several girls play bastketball that are on the LP volleyball team. They have 7 girls on their roster who play basketball. And that just the JV-Varsity Volleyball Team. So before you start spouting off maybe you should get your facts straight. Just because the Twins don't play don't hold that against the program. Meyer doesn't say anything infact she works with those girls so they can do both. Before Meyer got to the program the team never went to the state tournament. The fact that this particular team made it to the finals with everything they have had to overcome from inuries, illness and setting changes is a credit to the girls and the program. Stop being so jealous this program has worked for what it is.
Great Job Ladies you rock!
Ohhhh....., Volleyball! | 10:19 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
This is what PG was talking about when they said they had 8 D1 athletes that were going to take state.
Re: LP | 10:26 a.m. Nov. 9, 2009
1) You are poorly misinformed.
2) It is not Coach Meyer's job to get her girls to play basketball. That is the basketball coach's job to get girls to play basketball and that is the decision of the student athlete and the parents.
3) Several of the volleyball players as noted above actually play basketball. I think Marquelle Funk plays basketball, for example, and Whitney Johnson, who I believe would be best characterized as a basketball player who plays volleyball if you get my jist. Certainly Funk is better known for basketball but missed pretty much the entire season because of a basketball injury from summer basketball.
3) Before Meyer's arrival the volleyball program was pathetic. I mean absolutely pathetic! It won maybe 2-3 games over the two or three years before her arrival, no state appearances. The girl's basketball team led by the great Shauna Kay, actually had won 2-3 state titles. The situation for her was much worse than what it is for Coach Flood. With some good help from dedicated club coaches Coach Meyer built the volleyball program. But she didn't inherit a good situation, she built her program.
Re: LP | 12:01 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
In regards to PG and LP, their top basketball players actually play volleyball. I don't Coach Meyer or Coach Schapp has done anything but support Marquelle Funk (LP) and Jennifer Hamson (PG) in their pursuits. The former injured her knee in summer basketball but Coach Meyer kept her with the program because she is a great athlete, student and team member and will be a key cog to both volleyball and basketball. In regards to the latter, she actually might play both sports in college. Being more familiar with LP than PG, I know of several players that actually do play both volleyball and basketball. But at least one does at PG as well and a very darn good player at that.

All large schools have conflicts between their volleyball and basketball programs, both sports demand a lot of extra time and that extra time is often in direct conflict. But the situation that exists at LP and PG is no different than any other school.

FYI--Both PG and LP have good athletes but so do a lot of schools (or so their parents claim). Both coaches deserve praises for building and/or cultivating top level programs.
Re: LP | 1:55 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Some facts about the history of LP volleyball:

1) Prior to Meyer's arrival ten years ago, the school did not qualify for the state tournament and hadn't even won more than three games in a season.
2) Meyer's teams have placed in state (the top 8) in eight of her ten years including seven state trips to the state finals and four championships.
3) Prior to Meyer's arrival the girl's basketball program had won back to back state titles.

If as LP is right LP is so full of athletes that anyone can coach them to the success they have seen the past few years, then I ask, why haven't the other coaches at Lone Peak been in the state finals seven years straight, or won four titles in those seven years? (And they're other great coaches at LP).

It is ridiculous to think that even with great athletes that any school could have this level of success without great and consistent coaching. Other schools have resources and quality athletes. Other schools are trying hard to win as well.

Unfortunately, Meyer perhaps has become a victim of her success and outlandish expectations.
Agree | 2:01 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
I agree 100% that it is not the volleyball coaches job to get her kids to play basketball. That is the basketball coaches job.

There are a lot of great athletes in this state that seem to love volleyball.

Did Funk play varsity volleyball as a sophomore? I don't remember her ever getting into games if she did.
Anonymous | 2:51 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Meyer's done a great job with LP volleyball, and it definitely helps that LP has players that work hard, compete, and play club volleyball for 6 to 7 months outside of high school vball.
Me | 5:26 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
The real championship game looked like it was played against PG and Bingham. Much more high octaine match than PG/LP. P/G....feel good because losing Mendivil and Hamson assures you of not repeating next year.

Of coarse we are feeling good. PG just won the state championship! quit bein a hater
PG VB | 4:42 p.m. Nov. 16, 2009
Incredible job girls. I've been watching PG volleyball for several years and this team was stocked with talent but that finals match was nearly picture perfect. Amazing match PG.

Returning girls and JV girls coming up next year, remember that feeling and work like crazy to repeat.
