When I was a student at a community college in Arizona, one of the professors every year had a survey to find out how sexually active the students at that school had been. He broke up the statistics between religions. On average, 60% of the students had had premarital sex. Of those who professed to be evangelical, it dropped something like 35-40%. Catholics were also around 40%. The students who were active Mormons came in at over 90%, I think it was 93% to be exact. Think about that, 93% of active Mormons were able to wait for marriage. I think that's pretty impressive, and I wish more people knew about that study. It shows that teaching abstinence can be remarkably successful if taught right.

I both had an LDS upbringing and lots of formal sex education and maintained abstinance untill marriage. My parents choose to let me go though those classes because they had to sign permission slips. The education of the biological parts of sex ed including the disease awareness and results of young pregnancy were all supportive of my beliefs to delay untill marriage and actully were supportive in any peer discussions about it. Bith control was not enough for me to give up my belifs to experiment. Unfortunately several of my LDS peers ended up with pregnancies in high school. I have faith in our children. In public schools they are learing about sex one way or the other don't even think they aren't.They are clever enough to act like they don't around us. Adults need to weigh in on the subect with them too. That's the choice here.
