I wasn't at the game, but it will be a huge let down if Mike Sharp can't play at RES. Hopefully they will reinstate him.

This would be a great oppurtunity to do the rigth thing and review the film. If the kid was reacting to others and in a relex action defending himself....then do the right thing and over-turn the suspension. The refs do not have access to the film on the field and did the right thing in their opinion. It will not be a slap in thier face to let the kid play. Just do the right thing.

Guy from St. George

Let's be clear about a few things: I'm not a Dixie, Pine View, Desert Hills, Snow Canyon or Hurricane fan. I like high school football and go to a lot of games, but I don't care who wins.

Let's also be clear about this: No one has the Sharp incident on video ... at least they didn't according to the radio Friday night. Dixie's coaches said their game film didn't show what happened. And the radio reporter talked to the refs, who said Sharp definitely threw a punch.

So, if we're going to talk about doing the right thing, why don't we start with enforcing the rules? Shoving is one thing, but if a player throws a punch, it's all over. High school rules are clear about that.

No one wants to see a kid miss a big game -- especially when that kid is the star quarterback -- but if he cannot maintain his composure and throws a punch, he deserves the suspension, regardless of the cost.

If UHSAA officials browbeat the refs into recanting the decision or rewriting their report, it sends the wrong message and sets a horrible precedent.

Forget the film

If he was throwing punches, suspend him, whether he was reacting or not.

I am a pv fan through and through and want them to win every game, that being said I want every other region nine team to win every other game except. I was not at the game but do know Mike Sharp and know that he is a good young man and a great athlete. I also feel that he is smart enough to not respond to such tatics and hurt his team by being ejected and lost for the next game. We had that situation at PV once this year with two of our best players being forced to sit out the DHHS game. The UHSAA took until the end of the week to hand down the ruling thereby disrupting the entire practice week and in the end let the team from "up north" dictate the result. I would hope that they would review and allow this quarterback to play, but remember you are in a position to beat a Utah County team. My feelings, we have some bad officials down here and no help from north. Good luck Dixie and Mike.

coach

I was at the game and watched the play that resulted in Sharp's ejection. In my opinion the officials severely overreacted to the play and should not have taken the actions that they did. No one was injured on the play, or even in danger, this would have been a good situation for a no call, especially since the officials apparently didn't see what went on before. Instead they demonstrate very poor judgment and issue the harshest penalty available. Knowing the UHSAA, I seriously doubt that he will be reinstated, but he should be. Region 9 officiating is in an abysmal state and this particular crew is the worst. WE NEED A NEW INFUSION OF QUALITY OFFICIALS.

Saddle Up!

This will be the time to see what dixie really has down deep, they have a great chance of getting to state but they have to dig down and find it. Mike shold have never been ejected so you should get him righ back in action if the UHSAA has any sence, go get em boys!

To Guy From ST G

You think Sharp didn't maintain his composure? They're were trying to break his wrists! Can you honestly say you wouldn't try to defend yourself if that was happening to you? He does not deserve the suspension. The officails over-reacted to the situation. I don't know, maybe he does deserve a suspension for slapping a guy on the shoulder pad after his wrists were being twisted. I hope UHSAA does the right thing and lets him play.

Accountability

I sure hope someone close to young Mr. Sharp takes the opportunity to teach accountability to a young man (& others) who lost his cool in the heat of the moment. I understand what led up to it & it sucks because I've been there before. But you have to maintain your composure because there are always gonna be players on the opposing team trying to bait you into retaliating with a punch or anything to draw a penalty.

The referees' jobs are to enforce the rules that are already in place, not make up new ones. If the UHSAA says that a punch warrants a suspension, it doesn't matter if nobody got hurt or if he even connected on the punch. The rule is the rule. If you don't like it, then lobby for the rule to be changed next season. But you can't change the rules on the fly just because he's a great young man except for this incident. What message would that be sending to other players who have the composure to walk away without retaliating?

Don't blame referees or UHSAA or anyone else. He threw the punch, end of story.

Was at the game

Watching the play the whole time start to finish. That was the worst call I have ever seen, he pushed a guy in the side of the helmet to get out from under the pile. To throw him out of the game is ridiculous. These refs have been horrible all year especially the one who made the call. He has been a ref at several of the games I have been to this year and there was always blown or missed call by his crew. If this penalty stands I will lead to charge to get him dismissed!!

Big Red

Officials will stay the same. UHSAA will stay the same. These things have been nearly a constant over the years. We'll all just have to move on. Go Flyers!

Let the Punishment fit the crime

Let me see if I understand this. There is a pile up, and a defensive player is trying to intentionally injure the opposing teams star quarterback. (By bending his fingers back on his throwing hand). The quarterback pulls his hand away, and in the process, "throws a punch" towards the kid.(How big of a "punch" could it have been?) There are 5 officials on the field, and ONLY one official sees what happens. (And apparently, he didn't see what precipitated the initial encounter). After a lengthy (10 minutes at least) disruption of the game, the officials decide to eject said star player, which makes him automatically ineligible for next weeks game. Question: If it was so "blatant", why did only ONE official see it, and why did it take 10 minutes to make the ejection call? If it was so obvious--why wasn't the call made immediately??? Dixie's quarterback is ejected from the game---isn't that punishment enough? In America, we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Why isn't this kid afforded any "due process"? Why isn't his explanation being considered? Do the "right thing" and let the kid play.

to accountability

Were you even at the game?! Did you see first-hand Sharp laying on the ground ON HIS STOMACH when this so called punch was thrown?!

Don't be so arrogant to publish a comment when you weren't even there to see what happened!!

Sharp did not deserve to be ejected from the game.

Re:coach

WE NEED A NEW INFUSION OF QUALITY OFFICIALS???? Show us the money....... That is why beggers can't be chosers. The state will take what they can get on ANY given Friday night, trust me on that one. Playoff officials are chosen according to the good 'ole boy system, and a 'what have you done for me lateley' mentality. Not always the best officials are out there. Yes, even in the playoffs.

team player

seriously, i know mike he wouldnt do anything to hurt the team and the refs have been making the crapiest calls all year long hopefully up at the U of U we can get some real refs that no what the hack it is theyre talking about, and im not just talking about the ONE ref that made the call on mike the whole squad gave friggin Bonneville 4 timeouts in the second half, i dont know about anyone else but the last time i checked you only get 3.

Region 9

The officiating has been horrible the whole year. But when you get a few accountants and real estate agents together to form the region 9 officials this is what you get. You get boys trying to keep up with a mans game! Oh by the way do you also need to be over 400 lbs to be the umpire on the field? Just asking.

Big Red

Constantly poor is what I was referring to. I don't see that changing.
