I wasn't at the game, but it will be a huge let down if Mike Sharp can't play at RES. Hopefully they will reinstate him.
Guy from SLC | 11:53 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
This would be a great oppurtunity to do the rigth thing and review the film. If the kid was reacting to others and in a relex action defending himself....then do the right thing and over-turn the suspension. The refs do not have access to the film on the field and did the right thing in their opinion. It will not be a slap in thier face to let the kid play. Just do the right thing.
Guy from St. George | 2:24 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Let's be clear about a few things: I'm not a Dixie, Pine View, Desert Hills, Snow Canyon or Hurricane fan. I like high school football and go to a lot of games, but I don't care who wins.

Let's also be clear about this: No one has the Sharp incident on video ... at least they didn't according to the radio Friday night. Dixie's coaches said their game film didn't show what happened. And the radio reporter talked to the refs, who said Sharp definitely threw a punch.

So, if we're going to talk about doing the right thing, why don't we start with enforcing the rules? Shoving is one thing, but if a player throws a punch, it's all over. High school rules are clear about that.

No one wants to see a kid miss a big game -- especially when that kid is the star quarterback -- but if he cannot maintain his composure and throws a punch, he deserves the suspension, regardless of the cost.

If UHSAA officials browbeat the refs into recanting the decision or rewriting their report, it sends the wrong message and sets a horrible precedent.
Forget the film | 7:59 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
If he was throwing punches, suspend him, whether he was reacting or not.
PVforever | 8:52 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
I am a pv fan through and through and want them to win every game, that being said I want every other region nine team to win every other game except. I was not at the game but do know Mike Sharp and know that he is a good young man and a great athlete. I also feel that he is smart enough to not respond to such tatics and hurt his team by being ejected and lost for the next game. We had that situation at PV once this year with two of our best players being forced to sit out the DHHS game. The UHSAA took until the end of the week to hand down the ruling thereby disrupting the entire practice week and in the end let the team from "up north" dictate the result. I would hope that they would review and allow this quarterback to play, but remember you are in a position to beat a Utah County team. My feelings, we have some bad officials down here and no help from north. Good luck Dixie and Mike.
coach | 8:55 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
I was at the game and watched the play that resulted in Sharp's ejection. In my opinion the officials severely overreacted to the play and should not have taken the actions that they did. No one was injured on the play, or even in danger, this would have been a good situation for a no call, especially since the officials apparently didn't see what went on before. Instead they demonstrate very poor judgment and issue the harshest penalty available. Knowing the UHSAA, I seriously doubt that he will be reinstated, but he should be. Region 9 officiating is in an abysmal state and this particular crew is the worst. WE NEED A NEW INFUSION OF QUALITY OFFICIALS.
Saddle Up! | 9:45 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
This will be the time to see what dixie really has down deep, they have a great chance of getting to state but they have to dig down and find it. Mike shold have never been ejected so you should get him righ back in action if the UHSAA has any sence, go get em boys!
To Guy From ST G | 9:55 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
You think Sharp didn't maintain his composure? They're were trying to break his wrists! Can you honestly say you wouldn't try to defend yourself if that was happening to you? He does not deserve the suspension. The officails over-reacted to the situation. I don't know, maybe he does deserve a suspension for slapping a guy on the shoulder pad after his wrists were being twisted. I hope UHSAA does the right thing and lets him play.
Accountability | 10:23 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
I sure hope someone close to young Mr. Sharp takes the opportunity to teach accountability to a young man (& others) who lost his cool in the heat of the moment. I understand what led up to it & it sucks because I've been there before. But you have to maintain your composure because there are always gonna be players on the opposing team trying to bait you into retaliating with a punch or anything to draw a penalty.

The referees' jobs are to enforce the rules that are already in place, not make up new ones. If the UHSAA says that a punch warrants a suspension, it doesn't matter if nobody got hurt or if he even connected on the punch. The rule is the rule. If you don't like it, then lobby for the rule to be changed next season. But you can't change the rules on the fly just because he's a great young man except for this incident. What message would that be sending to other players who have the composure to walk away without retaliating?

Don't blame referees or UHSAA or anyone else. He threw the punch, end of story.
Was at the game | 10:42 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Watching the play the whole time start to finish. That was the worst call I have ever seen, he pushed a guy in the side of the helmet to get out from under the pile. To throw him out of the game is ridiculous. These refs have been horrible all year especially the one who made the call. He has been a ref at several of the games I have been to this year and there was always blown or missed call by his crew. If this penalty stands I will lead to charge to get him dismissed!!
Big Red | 10:53 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Officials will stay the same. UHSAA will stay the same. These things have been nearly a constant over the years. We'll all just have to move on. Go Flyers!
Let the Punishment fit the crime | 11:01 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Let me see if I understand this. There is a pile up, and a defensive player is trying to intentionally injure the opposing teams star quarterback. (By bending his fingers back on his throwing hand). The quarterback pulls his hand away, and in the process, "throws a punch" towards the kid.(How big of a "punch" could it have been?) There are 5 officials on the field, and ONLY one official sees what happens. (And apparently, he didn't see what precipitated the initial encounter). After a lengthy (10 minutes at least) disruption of the game, the officials decide to eject said star player, which makes him automatically ineligible for next weeks game. Question: If it was so "blatant", why did only ONE official see it, and why did it take 10 minutes to make the ejection call? If it was so obvious--why wasn't the call made immediately??? Dixie's quarterback is ejected from the game---isn't that punishment enough? In America, we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Why isn't this kid afforded any "due process"? Why isn't his explanation being considered? Do the "right thing" and let the kid play.
to accountability | 11:18 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Were you even at the game?! Did you see first-hand Sharp laying on the ground ON HIS STOMACH when this so called punch was thrown?!

Don't be so arrogant to publish a comment when you weren't even there to see what happened!!

Sharp did not deserve to be ejected from the game.
Re:coach | 11:32 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
WE NEED A NEW INFUSION OF QUALITY OFFICIALS???? Show us the money....... That is why beggers can't be chosers. The state will take what they can get on ANY given Friday night, trust me on that one. Playoff officials are chosen according to the good 'ole boy system, and a 'what have you done for me lateley' mentality. Not always the best officials are out there. Yes, even in the playoffs.
team player | 11:45 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
seriously, i know mike he wouldnt do anything to hurt the team and the refs have been making the crapiest calls all year long hopefully up at the U of U we can get some real refs that no what the hack it is theyre talking about, and im not just talking about the ONE ref that made the call on mike the whole squad gave friggin Bonneville 4 timeouts in the second half, i dont know about anyone else but the last time i checked you only get 3.
Region 9 | 12:01 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
The officiating has been horrible the whole year. But when you get a few accountants and real estate agents together to form the region 9 officials this is what you get. You get boys trying to keep up with a mans game! Oh by the way do you also need to be over 400 lbs to be the umpire on the field? Just asking.

was at the game, I have seen the tape, Mike was on this stomach and the punch more of a push up to get the Bonneville player away, replay will used, the player will be reinstated, the officials do their jobs, the coaches will coach, the players will play, and life as we know it goes on, see you on Thurs

Classy! I appreciate that comment. It's nice to see a true sports fan showing some class. Go Flyers!
Got it on film | 2:27 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
I did not see the punch thrown. Mike is on his stomach. What kind of punch can you throw from that position? Plus, if he did throw a punch wouldn't you think the umpire would step in to break it up? The umpire threw his flag and just stood there, seems odd to me...
G | 2:45 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
As one of mike's teammates, i've watched personal film (which my dad recorded) and he absolutely does not throw any sort of punch. The most violent thing he may have done is hit the opposing kids hand off his wrist. I will be more than happy to give film to any official or uhsaa member so the right call can be made and michael can be reinstated.
Flyer fan, student, and athlete | 4:10 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Hey G send in your film and anyone else who has film send it in also. The more evidence of Mikes innocence the better the chance for a positive outcome. I have had personal experience with the uhsaa and they are tough, even when abuse is taken against an athlete. And Dixie I have complete confidence in your ability to come out on top with a win, even if the uhsaa doesn't reinstate Mike.
Any Bonneville fans at the game? | 4:29 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
I would like to hear from a Bonneville fan or player who was there and what they saw. It sounds like it was a bad call, but I want to hear both sides.
Let the fil speak for itself | 4:38 p.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Last night i saw the film that monkres and mike looked at, its obvious mike didnt throw a punch and was pulling away, it was sent up to slc this morning for review, if UHSAA doesnt over turn the call its bush
bonneville | 1:10 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
i didn't see the punch but teammates said that it happened. i saw the commotion going on so i don't think it was a bad call. its too bads our offensive coordinater could work with what we had on the offensive side. we would be 12-0 playing mountian crest in the finals beating them.
Re UHSAA | 2:12 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
My understanding is that an ejection cannot be appealed.

A coaches ejection can be appealed, but not a players.

Based on the position of the players, in the alleged incident, I cannot see how the video could give conclusive evidence.

Only the officials can overturn the ejection. The player in question had previously (during a dead ball) thrown the football at the head of a Bonneville player.
Steveo | 4:22 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
If you dont like the officiating, and you think there needs to be new officials for region 9, what are you waiting for? Go turn in an application to the UHSAA. They will be happy to take it. next go but your official outfits (2 at $350 a piece). Once you have done that, make sure to get work off every frieday evening and be willing to travel hundreds of miles last minute.

If you complain about the refs, try being one
T | 4:42 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
It is arrogant and nieve to think that the officials got the call right and that it shouldn't be looked at to overturn. At every other level a call can be challenged and overturn. It is tough to be a referee at the high school level, but they signed up for the job. Just because the pay isn't the best shouldn't mean that the officials shouldn't be accountable for their calls. Let's remember that it was only one out of the five that saw the punch. That offical also has had a history with ejecting DHS players in the past. Life will go on and so will the playoffs. Maybe it is time to look at other changes.
re T | 7:54 p.m. Nov. 8, 2009
Ditto to that!!

I am so happy for Mike. It would have been wrong for everyone involved to not let him play. I love you Mike and am excited to see you play on the turf. I will be there and although I won't be wearing blue, I will have a little blue in my heart for my boys I coached all those years.
A history? | 2:54 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
To T: You said that the official who threw the penalty flag "also has had a history with ejecting DHS players in the past." Who is the official? I'd like to know.
To Guy from St. George | 4:41 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
It is obvious that someone had the video that you claim that no one had. 4 of the refs obviously knew that it was questionable and decided to do the right thing. My question to you is were you the official that made the wrong call and wanted to protect yourself from being exposed for a bad call that could have cost a team a chance at the championship?
Guy from St. George | 5:59 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Go back and read what I wrote: "No one has the Sharp incident on video ... at least they didn't according to the radio Friday night."

Dixie said Friday night their game film didn't show what happened. Someone from the radio talked to the refs, too, and the one who threw the flag said he saw a punch.

That's what I knew at 2:24 a.m. on Saturday. Based on the radio and talking to people, I didn't think there was any film. And I thought the ref's decision based on what he said he saw was right.

Now that the film has surfaced and it shows that Sharp didn't really throw a punch, I'm glad he will play this week.

And no, I am not the ref who threw the flag. I'm not a ref at all. But the way you bad-mouth and belittle a ref who thought he was doing the right thing tells me all I need to know about you.

We have rules for reasons. Refs aren't infallible, and they'll make mistakes. Should we invalidate all rules just because a ref might be wrong?
To : Guy From St. George | 8:25 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
My comments should say alot about me I don't go shooting my mouth off about something that I know nothing about. I am also not afraid to ask questions to try and get the answers before so I don't make dumb comments.

I am glad to know that you are not a referee and just an ignorant fan.

No rules were invalidated. There is a process that must be followed and that is what the referees did they called fo a referee reiew because thaty is allowed. Schools and players are not allowed to appeal decisions.

If it was not a bad call the officiating crew would not have asked for a review and it would not have been overturned.
Red devil | 10:37 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
We're happy to hear that mike is back. He is the best player for that team. And we didn't want to beat dixie with out him because I know they will say thatike was out that why we beat them. So 1 more time I'll see u guys at the U. We ready to play and is gonna be a fun game plus. We got back alema. Marcus. New QB and Raul delgado that he is being one of the players makers for this teams the last 3 games so we r much better and more ready to kill some flayers sorry Dixie.
