Well, if the part isn't needed to fly, and they keep falling off(like in Japan in 2005) why put them on the plane?

It's a fairing that provides aerodynamic benefits (in layperson's terms, it improves the plane's gas mileage).

Do you honestly think that after literally thousands of engineers (i.e. people smarter than you) have pored over every square inch of the design that there are unnecessary parts on it? Good thing we have Deseret News commenters telling us which parts we can remove from the plane. Hey, that fuel line doesn't look like it's doing anything - let's take it off too!
