Very good article. How much is the interest on the loans?

People need to pay back their low-interest loans to maintain their human dignity and self-respect, and of course to obey the commands of holy scripture.

A new era in the church? I think this is the last nail in PEF as it exists. It also is the last nail of the church as we know it. It is a church not a business. Only a matter of time. Can't wait for the Ferris Wheel in front of Temple Square and the sign sayin Disneyland, SLC. Just sad.

Trend

It is good to see the church investing in people rather than just stone and mortar. Maybe if the mormons keep practicing they will become christian inspite of themselves.

Re: Trend

They are not investing in people just making money off of them. 10 percent goes a lot further with an educated man and one with job prospects.

great program

Wow, three of the first four comments are negative towards a church that is helping people become educated. My congratulations to the Mormon church for a great program that helps people move out of poverty.

Klueth

Are gays eligible for the program?

@great program

Ditto! Whatever happened to the ethic in this country that "The Lord helps those who help themselves?" Or the Chinese proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life?" What on earth is wrong with giving people a means to be self reliant, for themselves, their families, their communities, and the Church? For every person who completes their education, they now can get married, support a family, educate their own children, provide leadership both in the Church and in their communities, etc.

If you need to complain about something, there's plenty of things wrong in the world. This isn't one of them.

I came to a better understanding of this and related matters by litening to Brian Ritchie, Pesident of the Lansing Michigan Stake, speak on how we get no poor in Zion.
One of the ways we do this is we network. We care for our brethren not just on Sunday but every day of the week.
The PEF is one of many programs the Church has to help people. There is also LDS Employment Services.
A have to agree with the last commentator that about the saddest thing ever is complaining about a program that gives people a chance to get an education that they would have no chance to get otherwise.
