I wonder how many "bugs" are in this system? The possibilities are endless. Just what I need - something goes wrong and I get choked to death by the safety device! Where's The Better Idea?

Your comment proves that you know nothing about development of airbag devices and creating and eliminating failure modes.

If the passenger compartment was filled with green
jello it would cushion shock of an impact even better.

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but air-bags still kinda creep me out.

More good progress from a smart, government free American company. Good for Ford.

Good for Ford! The US automakers have lagged behind their Japanese, Korean and European counterparts in technology for years so it is good to see them innovating. Still, it would have been nice if this were truly an 'American' innovation. The engineer, Srini Sundararajan, is a native of India as are nearly 25% of all engineering graduates from US universities. MIT graduated only 51 native born US citizens last year from the school of engineering out of a class of 950.

Let's focus as a culture on mathematics and science so we can 'catch up' in innovation.
