Good luck, stay focused on the next step-Syracuse. keep the "Big Blue Train" rolling.
Should be fun | 1:02 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
I'm excited for this weeks games should be lots of fun. CWood looking for revenge while Alta seems to be hungry for more. Bingham's high power offense against the states best defense from Syracuse. a struggling PG team with a lot of talent against a very good Davis team. and what I think will be the most interesting game can hunter stop lone peaks vertical passing attack. the only for sure win I can see and i'm still not too sure about it is Bingham over Syracuse. Syracuse has a chance if they can get the game to the last possession or overtime. I just don't see it happening though. Alta over Cwood is my next pick being much closer than week 1s match up alta wins on the leg of their kicker. the davis darts are hot and pg has a load of talent. I can see this game going either way and the game will probably be closer than the final score. Lone peak and Hunter I pick lone peak cuz they start hot and if they can get hunter down early and out of their game plan.

Football. I am so tired of hearing about Football! Does the Deseret News know that there are Female Sports going on as well. These girls deserve the recognition as they work just as hard as these boys work in their respective sports. What is most disheartening it that their have been articles written about this discrepancy by this very news paper and still you feed in to the "girls sports aren't as important as boys sports" attitude as displayed by your lack of coverage. The 4A and 5A volleyball state tournaments are this weekend and you give more coverage to a football playoff game than to the volleyball state tournament. Shame on you.

I think Alta and Bingham are pretty clear cut favorites and should both win, seems like they're destined to play every year against each other on the turf. I know CW will be all fired up looking for paybacks, but emotion can only overcome so much disparity.
I think Lone Peak and Hunter will be a good game but of all the games I think Davis and PG will be the closest. I'd like to see all of the Region 4 teams win this week, but I'm afraid Davis is going to be too tough on their home field.

The reason behind more football coverage is that it brings in more readers. Not nearly as many people want to read about girls volleyball. Sad but true. At the end of the day, the paper is a business just like anything else.
Sit Back and Watch | 10:51 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
I'm amazed at the coverage the Sports writers are still giving the "Big Three"-Bingham,Alta and Pleasant Grove. I feel today's games are going to collectively prove to be the most exciting Friday night matchup's of the 2009 season. Each coach should be going into tonight's game plan thinking somewhere in the back of his head that this is going to get allot worse before it gets any better. Hunter, Davis, Cottonwood, Syracuse and especially Lone Peak each have allot of fire and "oh yeah, watch this" attitude. Three of these teams are peaking at just the right time. All the Walk will happen on their field's tonight and the Talk be will be left to those sports writers whom haven't written about the real character and talent that will show itself once again from these teams. I feel the true match up tonight will be Lone Peak's Line Backers against Hunter's Runners. That will be incredible as Lone Peak's Backers are the best in the state and Hunter's Running Back's have heart and size. Great Football tonight, let's Sit Back and Watch.

Ease up. I am also a volleyball fan like yourself, and go to the tournament every year. But you cant blame the Deseret news for writing articles about Football. it is the dominant high school sport and brings in the most money. I know in my old high school, more than half the revenue brought in from football games went towards other sports and progams (band, volleyball, ballroom, whatever)

Once your sport brings in as much money to the schools and communities as football does, then I will re-evaluate your comment
Playing the crowd | 11:10 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Volleyball Fan, I agree that the coverage unfairly favors football. But the reporters are catering to the largest readership available. Football is the proverbial 800-pound gorilla and the fans comment on stories about it much more than volleyball. It's a numbers game and volleyball just doesn't draw the crowds like football.
One football game at a big school, like Bingham or Alta, probably has a larger crowd than at all the
5 A volleyball games combined, tournament games included. Maybe more than all other fall sports combined.

You are going to see some damaged Hawk egos once they feel the stampede of the raging Colts!!!
I agree | 12:15 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
with the comment at 10:59. I played for Alta and we did a ton of fundraising every summer, and o lot of the money goes to other sports programs. Anyone who saw our old track knows how bad that pothole ridden mess was. Thanks to football fundraising, we know have one of the best tracks and turf football/soccer/lacrosse fields in the state.

I predict Alta and Bingham both win by 20+ points.

Is Bingham going to choke again? They may be the biggest choke artists when they get to the playoffs or the state championship.
Anonymous | 1:08 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
no Alta will win 47-21 and Bingham will win 27-13 but in the next 2 or 3 years ben lomond will beat all of them thay will have 8 or 9 kids on there team that will be 6-4 to 6-8 and 310 to 370 on there team and thay can all bench over 300 and squot over 500
RE: Anonymous | 1:20 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Its not so much that they choke, rather they get out-coached in spite of possessing superior talent.
From a mom... | 8:29 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
lets see..a Alta vs Bingham game will bring in 10,000 to 15,000 fans.. last time I went to a girls volleyball game there were 20 "parents" in the stand. Be happy those football players are working hard so you can play your volleyball. Get a grip.
Hunter | 8:47 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Hunter Wins! Good Game Lone Peak!
Girls Voleyball | 10:22 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Again.....if a sports program does not support itself.....get rid of it. Basketball and Football (boys) make money (lots of it). Baseball and Softball break even or maybe cost some. All other womens and mens sports in HS should be cancelled. Let the kids play in private systems completely funded by the parents. Heck....my kid is a geat baseball player and the amount we pay each year to play HS basball would pay for a great private system.
Playing the lynch mob | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 7, 2009
Some of you people are extremely narrow-minded.
The girls’ sports are just as important, if not more so, to the athletes. They may not bring in the large crowds but that doesn't diminish their positive effects. Those of you who have tried to turn this into an issue of money missed the point. The girls’ sports teams deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication.
If football and basketball were eliminated at schools where they didn’t make money one of Utah's best high school football teams wouldn’t exist. Bingham’s football program would have been cancelled nearly thirty years ago, if not before, when they had NO fan support. I went to a game at Bingham in 1981 and there were more coaches than fans. Are you arguing that the sports should only be eliminated if they make money at SOME schools, the more successful ones or your favorite?
After reading some of your comments I changed the title of my own from "playing the crowd", as I used yesterday.
