Don't collect- --- then rebate | 1:32 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
A much better and simpler solution would be to provide a fixed rebate to every legal Utah resident equal to the sales tax on all consumption below the poverty line.

There are poor among us who won't be here long enough to become Utah residents, who are just passing through. Besides collecting the tax then giving a rebate is complicated, why not just don't collect the tax in the first place.

If we need to raise revenue, lets remember that Utah recently enacted a flat income tax which benefits mostly the rich.

Unfortunately, Ron Hilton's organization is completely mis-named. The entire focus is to force an unfair tax system on Utahns, one that makes one segment of Utah's population pay for the services provided to another segment.
It would be nice to see the DN pin down some of these groups and call them out for their deliberate obfuscation, but the DN so often acts as their cheerleaders, we can't expect to hear the tough questions get asked.

What is it that you want, Mr. Hilton? A fair tax on what? "Tax the kids" McIff wants to tax families when they buy food. I guess he wants to penalize parents for taking care of their kids. Is that what you think is fair? Why?

Washington & Montana have no food tax and that seems to work out fine.

It appears what Mr Hilton wants is more Gov't intrusion and bureaucracy all in the name of fairness... what a socialist.

A fixed rebate does not go to how much a person actually spends on food. Another idea, but what is its real objective?

Only user fees, where those who use government services pay according to how much they use the services are truly fair.

The “Fair Tax” touted by the conservatives is not a fair tax. Like many other instances where the conservatives put phony meanings on words, the label of “Fair Tax” has all the legitimacy of their “fair and balanced” news reporting.

It is my firm belief that the “Fair Tax” is simply a plan for the wealthy individuals and their corporations to shift the cost of our government to working people while they take over the power and authority of the government itself.
