I think I'll give this one a chance. For reference, here are the first two paragraphs from Vice's review of Napoleon Dynamite (awarded 2.5 stars):
"Quirkiness and goofiness can carry "Napoleon Dynamite" only so far. Once you get past that, there's not a whole lot more to the film."
"This is basically a collection of hit-and-miss skits that are stumbling around in search of a story line. Not that you really expect more than that from a comedy, but this one needs something."
Clearly Jeff Vice's sense of humor is too sophisticated for these type of films, although most critics and the public obviously liked Napoleon Dynamite. I hope he's wrong on this one too.
I wish the DN would get someone else to review movies.
Saw it. Total, complete garbage.
this movie is getting panned everywhere it's getting shown. even the studio didn't really want to put it out there. if you don't follow Jared Hess, then you probably don't even know this has been out in theaters for a week already. it'll be lucky to break a million at the box office. hopefully Hess isn't just a one hit wonder.
I agree with you there, JV. Don't listen to Jeff Vice.
If you don't agree with Mr. Vice's movie reviews, than all you have to do is start surfing the web for a critic that you do agree with. It's why the internet was invented.
But if you always disagree with Mr. Vice's reviews he can still be valuable to you. If he gives a movie a poor review, than of course you should see that movie because you usually disagree with his reviews. If he gives a movie a positive review, than that's a movie you should avoid, because, well you get the point.
And while wer'e talkin about it, you should be sure to see G.I. Joe and Transformers. He gave both those movies poor reviews so you will probably really like them. Don't say he didn't warn you however.
Transformers was the highest grossing movie this year. Only further proof of how out of touch Mr. Vice is to his audience.
Agreed: The only local filmmaker Vice does like is Richard Dutcher.
Dutcher left the Mormon church. How ironic that Vice championed Dutcher and the fact that this is a Mormon owned paper. Clearly Vice is out of touch with is audience.
Jared Hess truly is the best talent to come out of Utah. Gentlemen Broncos is indeed a unique view at life and a great film. I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time.
I thought this movie was pretty good. Jeff Vice is a fabulous reviewer.
i put napoleon and Nacho in my top 5 comedies of all time. this however was a dreadful mess, even my teenage boys hated it. i'm confident he'll rebound with something much better though
Lighten up. And to the person who brought up the fact that Transformers was the highest grossing movie this year... just because it brought in the bucks doesn't mean it was good. Do you remember when "Star Wars: Episode I" came out?
Transformers 2 was a terrible film. The first one was good, the second was horrible. Napoleon was brilliant, Nacho was good. But from the previews I have seen and the reviews I have read (not just this one) Broncos seems to be following the Transformers trend (gross humor throughout) making it the least good of the three. Part of the brilliance of Napoleon was that it was not only clean humor, but the fact that it wasn't FORCED humor - it was subtle and situational. I'm disappointed and hope Hess turns it around in the future.
I love loved this movie. I'm not super into barf and poo jokes either. That seemed to be keeping in harmony with the whole 'world of a teenage boy thing' and never is really offensive. For me, all the subtle Nappy D. humor is all still there. Mike White for instance is hilarious- so awkward yet confident. Sam Rockwell is doing a Robert Duvall old western impression the whole time. Not only is it really funny but it is a really tender story about a mother and son. It is about protecting the things that matter like family and integrity. If nothing else its more original and way funnier than anything else youll see this century
Gentlemen Broncos was so inappropriate, my entire party and I walked out of the theater. A good movie does not always mean simply including crass humor. Please don't revert to ill-tasting humor because it sells. Jared, take it from Napolean and Nacho successes, you can be successful at the same time as being clean and tasteful.
I really wanted to like this movie. Big fan of Napoleon and Nacho. This movie was a disaster. The sad thing is they had a great premise that could have been funny. The cast was great except for Hector Jimenez. That dude needs to take a powder. Funny in Nacho, very lame in this one. The scat humor was making us groan it was so unfunny. I am not surprised the studio pulled the plug on wide release. I hope the Hess' bounce back, but who is going to want to invest in and be in one of the next movies. If you haven't seen it yet, don't waste your time and $.
