This is awesome news!! Now we are really going to tear it up at the NCAA Tourny!!
AZ Dave | 2:25 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Wow Beat out Nevada and Idaho for him and someone relative. Sounds like a keeper
The Cougars | 2:35 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
get richer in the b-ball talent category all the time. Meanwhile, the utes are playing each position by commmitte, since they don't have anybody who can take over. The utes are going to be a drag on the MWC this year and for the foreseable future.

What about the bigs? | 2:36 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
BYU really needs to recruit some more big men. Miles is a senior and, while a bunch of good guards is nice, one thing that everybody should have learned in the past couple of years (while playing against Nevill) is that the Cougars really need some good bigs to continue to compete.
What's new? | 2:46 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Another family member, or friend of a friend. B.Y.U. sets their own recruiting standards, or should I say limitations. Same is true in football.

Bigs | 2:52 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
The Y lost out to the Mormon big who picked ASU, they might go after the kid from Waterford, and they have Davies, Anderson and Harstock for two more years after this one, and have four bigs on missions.
Dave | 3:38 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Wow!! Idaho, Nevada, Portland & UC Riverside wanted this kid as well. The headline to this article should be "Vegas Yawner" to commit.
Rick | 3:39 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
I agree, what's with all the recruiting of 2s and 3s instead of going after post players? Davies, Hartsock and Anderson are great, but I think we still need a big force in the paint. Meanwhile we are so well stocked on the perimeter with Haws and Collinsworth. The missing piece to a truly great team is a great big man. Please recruit one! Who are the four bigs on missions?

re: the Cougars | 4:14 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Getting richer? Anytime a recruit is labeled with the term "sleeper," it means he's a relative of someone in the program, and nobody else really wanted him.

Here's the actual stats, I know Cougar fans don't like to hear them:

Utah currently has 3 recruits for 2010. They are an 88, 88 & 87 grade on ESPN.

BYU currently has 2 recruits for 2010. Collinsworth, with all the hype and attention from local media, is also an 88. The same as all 3 of Utah's recruits that nobody pays attention to. The kid in this article is a 76 on ESPN.

Want to reconsider your comment based on the actual facts?
Yawn | 4:45 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Its ridiculous by anyone (ESPN, Scouts.com, fans, etc.) to rank recruits. No one knows who will work out, star or flop until after their tenure at the school is over. It is much ado about nothing.
moose on the loose | 4:52 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Leave it to the ute fans to post ranking and stars and bla bla bla. Then they have to tear apart some high school senior to make themselves feel better about hating BYU. Wonder why no one like the ute fans? ? ?
yewtar | 5:37 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
I think Boylen has a knack for getting his guys to play hard and overachieve and he is probably responsible for Utah getting a really good schedule going, but the fact is, BYU has won or shared a conference title three years in a row and BYU is favored to win this year. So say what you want about BYU's recruiting, Ute fans, but BYU has things going the right way compared to the other fish in the MWC sea.
someone | 6:19 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
needs to investigate the BYU/Bishop Gorman connection. BYU is gonna get in trouble if they keep this shady deal up.

First, Tavernari emerges from Bishop Gorman under very shady circumstances and now this fellow.

The whole Rice/Bishop Gorman connection smells fishy.
SJ Bobkins | 10:05 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Love coach Rose, but Bishop Gorman has a closet filled with 3 and 4 star kids, if you gotta pick one. I don't consider this kid to be a "sleeper" unless he is truly a "deep sleeper". We beat out I-dah-ho, and Nevada, Cal-Riverside, maybe Portland State, ain't we great?
Ernest T. Bass | 7:51 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
He's awesome. Just like everything at byu. Aweswome.

Your comments used to be funny (years ago)... however, do you actually have SOMETHING of value, to add to these blogs, that is NOT seething with sarcasm?! Seriously, I hate reading your comments, yet I can't escape them because you post on EVERYTHING--especially anything BYU. Your disdain for the Cougars has grown VERY old. Please find something new to hate, signed all Cougar fans. P.S. Perhaps getting out of your moms basement once in a while and getting some sunshine would brighten your sad outlook on life. UGH!
Original Super fan | 9:57 a.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Player rankings are very misleading. While it is nice to be able to say "look at all the high profile players we've recruited" generally those kids all pan out differently. Case and point - Jimmer Fredette was a 2 star player when he was recruited, but he has turned into a gem. Plaisted was a 3 star, Miles a 4 star, yet Plaisted imo was head and shoulders better in the paint than Miles is. The college game is SO much different than the High School game, and BYU plays a very slowed down game compared to alot of other schools. You either have highly skilled "not as athletic" kids, or lower skilled "super athletic" kids, and generally the super athletic kids get higher rankings.

I think my cougs will be just fine this year.
Greg | 12:19 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Nothing fishy about the connection...it's out in the open. Dave Rice's brother is the head coach of Gorman. Naturally, if a player might have interest in BYU, Coach Rice from Vegas is going to let his brother know.

That's how the recruiting world works...connections. That's why BYU has had solid JUCO players over the years...connections from Rose's time at Dixie. "Fishy" stuff is money under the table, boosters, etc. Two family members in the same coaching world that help each other out...totally normal.

re: someone | 12:38 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
should get a life and stop obsessing about a team he hates
M.W.C. Basketball | 12:41 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Is really terrible...
When was the last time someone ever did anything special in the tournament?

Who plays in the NBA who played in the MWC (recently). (I'm talking about regular season games and more than warming the bench).

Occasionally Utah is ok, but most years everyone is trash.
So Winning the MWC in basketball doesn't really mean anything.

Boring players who are not any good.

Wow, Neville and Cummard made the NBDL, when that is the best thing that happens in years for the conference it is sad.

I'm surprised that anyone follows this low level of basketball.

At least football has 2 or 3 teams ranked a lot of years...
...MWC basketball, is laughable.
re: MWC Basketball  | 12:52 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Obviously written by a clueless hater who wouldn't know a pick from a roll.

Any conference that regularly receives multiple at-large bids to the NCAA tournament plays some pretty good basketball.
Dave Rose | 1:01 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Regardless of how this guy is ranked, I trust Dave Rose's opinion of players. Three conferences championships and going for four and over 20 wins each season since he has been coach are all you need to know about Dave Rose; he and his teams only continually improve. This guy will likely turn out to be a very good recruit. Ernest T Bass is a Ute fan/BYU hater for those who didn't already know and your NOT funny.
Who's ranking these players? | 1:17 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Does anyone know who is ranking these players? I do. One person goes to a summer tournament and watches the kid for 1/2 a game and makes an assessment. Meanwhile he is assessing 8 kids all at the same time. It is ridiculous. You are stupid if you think the rankings are "facts". You are clueless.
re: re: MWC Basketball | 1:23 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
FYI...MWC Basketball knows a pick from a roll...a pick is what he does to his nose while he is commenting on this board and roll is what is around his belly from being a wanna be church ball player! I can picture him now...what a knuckle head!
Anonymous | 1:26 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Conferences championships in the MWC doesn't mean squat. Just like the football team, can't win the big ones
MWC & NBA...... | 2:00 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
Although it clearly doesnt compare to other conferences the MWC does produce some guys who are better than bench warmers in the NBA.....Granger Avgs 23 a game for IND (25 a game last year), I think people have heard of Shawn Marion & Andre Miller......etc......again, not like "other" conferences...but the conference is bigger than EWETAH and BYU.......
re: anony MOUSE | 3:05 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
"Conferences championships in the MWC doesn't mean squat."

you gots good engerlishes

Only true for a fan whose team isn't good enough to win one.

EVERY coach and EVERY player will tell you that their FIRST goal as a team EVERY year is to win the conference championship.
someone | 3:48 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
needs to investigate how it's okay to incentivize a recruit by allowing them to live the the head coach of Bishop Gorman who also happens to be Coach Rice's brother.

Seriously, the recruiting of Tavernari stinks worse than a Turkey farm in Ephraim/Manti area.

Now a second recruit in a few short years with a fishy connection. Connections are one thing, but funnelling recruits with the BYU/Bishop Gorman connections smells not quite right.
Seattleview | 7:03 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009

To someone:
You mean we are being forced to take this kid becuase BYU got Tavernari a few years ago? :)

I have always been surprised at how much influence high school coaches have over where a student will go. I would expect they would go where they want to.
Vegas Baby | 7:13 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
The advantage BYU has over Utah is that Jim Boylen is still the head coach there. MWC championships may not mean Jack, but Utah won't even win one for years. Boylen lasts what, two more years, tops. He will have you remembering Ray Giacoletti, fondly. Good luck, Utes.
T. Bone | 4:55 p.m. Nov. 9, 2009
Utah won the conference title last year & the tournament.
