I'll give the Deseret News the benefit of the doubt this time. But hopefully the Deseret News can be a good example of journalism in the future and stay objective.

Historical evidence shows that the news media has swayed votes by picking, choosing, and slanting what to report. I think some people are waking up to the fact and are researching the facts themselves since many reporters are either too lazy or too biased to do their jobs right.

I'm not saying the Des News is in the same group with a lot of other news organizations. Perhaps the South Jordan article was just a coincidence. But I think the writer of the letter brings up a very important point. And I hope we all take note.

The news organizations need to be more objective and stop trying to change the world, just report the facts and let us decide. And the readers are waking up and realizing that we need to think for ourselves. That just because it's in black and white doesn't mean it is true. We need to research and call the journalists on the carpet when they have been unfair.

In the Know | 3:21 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
I happen to know the author of the article. She explained the genesis of the article. It started as a story about sales tax revenues over eight weeks ago. The Des News was collecting information when they noticed that South Jordan was the only city who had positive sales tax growth - indicating a healthy economic base - in spite of a down economy.

The author submitted her story four weeks ago. There was never space for it to run. I am sure it was a space issue - the article is very lengthy and had a photo, a graph, and a map. It was simply moved for space. To suggest something otherwise is simply not correct.

Could this be a case of supporter of a candidate who did not win looking for a scapegoat?

Not Proud of South Jordan? | 3:23 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
Wait, the Hansen's said they were proud of the story they read until they realized it was the day before the election? So they are proud of their city, but dislike the Mayor and City Council who set the city up for success?
Seems odd to me.

Huh? | 4:18 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
The writer claims:
"We didn't know that the Deseret News supported one political candidate over another. The article obviously supported Mayor Kent Money."

First off, I read the article, and it quotes the South Jordan mayor briefly. It doesn't heap praise on him. The city planner and economic director attribute it to several different factors. The Mayor was quoted less than the other two. Hardly a ringing endorsement.
This is a well researched and written article. Makes me wish I lived in South Jordan!

Sour Grapes??? | 4:23 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
This comment only comes out after the candidate they supported lost? What if the election went the other way?
Sounds like sour grapes to me. They should be "proud" to live in a place that is handling growth and "thriving" unlike alot of other places.

I would have voted for that mayor if I lived there.
