Thanks for shedding some light on this proposal. This is the first article I have read that really explains the ethics proposal. This is the role of a city newspaper, well done.

Sen. Hillyard has been in the legislature for 29 years (!), way too long, but power is intoxicating. Naysayers like that should be ignored in this debate.

Should a government serve the People, or should the People serve a government? I say the second. We don't need no ethics reform!

The trouble is the initiative won't create or improve ethics! What it will do is make it more complicated, push shady deals underground, and make it easier to make good legislators look bad.

It's the kind of "change" Obama is bringing, i.e. for the worse!

Complicated, goes too far, will have unintended consequences, will prevent good people from seeking office. These are all specious arguments against a necessary change in the way the state legislature does business. Light is a great disinfectant.
Why I'm signing | 1:00 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009
I am signing the petition because the Legislature has given only lip service to ethics. I'll reserve judgment on how I'll vote next November until after the next Legislative session - I'll give them one more chance. But they better do the job right!

We need "ethics reform" but not of this kind. This initiative would be the greatest inhibitor of democracy ever to reach our state.

Democracy requires lawmakers who shepherd public resources, not lawmakers who take personal profit for private business. For decades, legislators have doggedly refused accountability. Now the citizens will do it.
