Hike of the week: Mueller Park Trail to Big Rock — Davis County

I've lived a mile and half from this trail for the last 9 years and have never once heard it referred to as "Big Rock." It's Elephant Rock to the locals.

I can back that up since my wife has been a south Davis resident all her life.

That being said, it is "Big Rock" on the official topo maps from the USGS, etc. And these articles aren't written for "the locals".

Personally when I do a hike based on a trail recommendation in the media, I'd prefer that they use official references that can be found on maps, rather than some obscure reference known only to "the locals". Odds are in most places I hike, i won't be bringing a local with me.

And if you're really lucky you'll see a mountain lion while you're hiking. Word is a hiker had quite the encounter with a mountain lion on that same trail not too long ago.

It's better known as "Elephan Rock" the only reason it could called "Big Rock" is so the locals know that they are talking to a visitor that doesn't know any better.

We call it Macaroni Rock and silly putty way. I love football.
