Go Beat the POKES, then. . . the LOBOS, then the FALCONS, then the UTES! Then, go to VEGAS and BEAT Probably OREGON ST.

Somehow, some way, a Ute fan is about to say something really stupid about BYU, further displaying their little brother syndrome.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Little brother....
Oh well | 10:18 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I guess our chances at a great year are gone. But. . . we still have a shot at another good 11-2 season. I agree with the first poster. It's hard to say who we would end up playing in the Las Vegas Bowl, assuming we win out and TCU goes to a BCS Bowl. Oregon St. would be a tough, tough opponent. I think it would be a nice test and a good win if we got to play them and win.

This just needs to be another good year so that we can decently pave the way for Jake Heaps and Co. to come in and finally be the guys to take us to the BCS. Not necessarily this next year, but in the years to come.

Go Cougars!

I am reading an article about BYU football, and what do I read? BYU players talking about the Utes. BYU fans commenting about the Utes. This story is about the Cougars!! Quit bringing up the Utes!! It has nothing to do with them!! Geez.
NevadaCoug | 10:42 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Obsession: you're reading an awful lot into a couple of comments that reference Utah. Who's really the obsessed one here?

Regarding BYU FAN @ 9:46:

First, you're probably just a Ute troll. But, just in case, BYU is not going to play in Vegas again this season. It could happen, sure, but no matter how they finish, the Vegas Bowl has pretty much said they are going with another team, if at all possible. And BYU will welcome it. Both parties are ready for a break after four straight years together.
Wayne Rout | 10:59 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I thought this article was going to be on the poor sportsmanship of the Wyo fans. They should be in the WAC, not the MWC. They should be greatful that BYU, TCU, Utah and Air Force would travel there to play. My local school, UTEP, was left out of the MWC. They have the same quality of sports knowlege and sportsmanship as Wyo. My vote is to throw them out and pick up Boise State
Speaking of Obsessions... | 11:10 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
... it was only a matter of time until some Cougar fan brought up Jake Heaps. Sheesh, you people need to at least let the guy put on a BYU uniform before you start piling on all the expectations, realistic and unrealistic alike.

FYI: Heaps' team lost a couple of games and lost in the first round of the state playoffs, though to an unbeaten squad. And blasphemy though it may be around Provo to say so, Heaps threw four interceptions in nine games. Hey, INTs happen when you're a QB. Detmer threw a few himself.

My point: Anyone expecting The Next Peyton Manning (especially the full-blown pro version) in Cougar Blue will have a good, LONG wait. Heaps is still human--AND he still has to win the nod over Riley Nelson. Don't give him the Heisman quite yet.

I won't complain if Heaps leads the Cougs to the BCS, should that happen. But it'll take more than a star QB to get there. (Consistently tough defense, for one thing?) So I also won't scream for Bronco's head if he decides Nelson's earned the job next year.
Coug in Provo | 11:15 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Nearly every comment mentions the Utes. Why? Are we Ute haters or Cougar fans?

Hopefully it's not your typical November Laramie weather on Saturday. That could be worrisome for the Cougs.
Boise Cougar | 11:16 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Holy crow Wayne. How we would like to dump Wyoming or CSU for a Boise State...
true blew | 11:36 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Vegas probably wanted to see a team from the conference would win their bowl game. I am still upset at Mendenhall for only using 6 of the 15 scheduled practice times the Vegas Bowl committee arranged. It didn't help when he and his players didn't show up for our pep rally. Small wonder BYU wasn't invited back , no matter what their record is. Cougar fans are always jumping ahead , we still have games to play yet, Wyoming could surprise us and Air Force is never a given.
Lavell Edwards | 3:49 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Famous quote: I'd rather be a loser from Utah and live in Utah, than a winner from Wyoming and live in Wyoming. At least he was correct on that assumption!
Tex-Mex | 4:40 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I don't believe BYU should be ranked at all. Two losses at home, and blow outs as well. Then the coach says maybe we weren't prepared as we should be.
If you play TCU AND FSU how much more motivation do you need to be prepared as possible?
Vernal Roid | 5:08 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Reading some of the post it looks as though BYU has already beaten Wyoming, Not so fast, Utah had a tough time with the Pokes at home and I can see BYU falling to them and Air force, No this isn't a UTE fan Either, Just don't count the games before they are played.
dyc | 6:15 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
True Blew has it right. We still have games to play. BYU has the potential to beat every team still on the schedule, but they always struggle with Utah and Air Force is doing some good things this year. We need both offense and defense playing together and doing their best in all the remaining games, instead of just having half of our players showing up for a game. Go Cougs! Show us you really want to win the rest of your season.
Come to Laramie | 6:19 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Thanks for coming, drive safely.

Don't speed, you'll get ticketed for 10-15 over unlike the SLC metro area.

Cougars gonna get spurred by the Cowboys.

"Anytime you go to Laramie in late October or November, it's always adventurous," said coach Bronco Mendenhall. "You just prepare for the best. You really can't overemphasize it. Otherwise it can interfere with your execution and the mindset of your team. You just go up and play."

What in the world is Mr. Mendenhall talking about? What is "it?"
Re:BYU FAN  | 6:43 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009

When is the national championship game that BYU is playing?
Is there an airport rally to send the team off?
Anonymous | 7:09 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Why are our fans bringing up the utes?

I agree Wayne, BSU needs to be in the MWC. What is taking Craig Thompson so long?
Cougarf@n | 7:33 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
re: Speaking of Obsessions: I'm pretty sure Heaps lost in the state championship game because his team's defense couldn't hold after he threw for three touchdowns. The other loss (+2 or 3 of his 4 interception on the year) was to Oaks Christian, a very good and nationally ranked california high school team with several D-1 commits. I'm not one of those fans that worships the ground that Heaps walks on, but I'm appropriately excited that he's joining the program and I think you should at least get your facts straight if you want to reduce expectations.

In other news, good to see BYU back in the top-25 after their first week out in over two years. Hopefully BYU can roll to a 10-2 season and beat up on whoever they get stuck with in the Poinsettia/Vegas bowl (I know thompson said BYU wouldn't go to the Vegas bowl again this year, but when has Thompson ever known what he's talking about?).
trueblue | 7:42 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
News Flash ! BYU is not that good. The cougars better be ready to play their best game against Wyoming or they will get beat. I think us cougar fans take for granted wins against teams like Wyoming. Can you imagine the shake up in Provo if we started losing to teams like wyoming, New Mexico and San diego State. Think about it, It could happen. What is the benifit of beating below average teams and then getting drilled by an average team like Arizona ? Sorry if this offends any of the brethren but, This is one FRUSTRATED cougar fan. Anything short of a blow out victory in Wyoming will demonstrate that the "soft bellys" in Provo are full.

Maybe I'm getting dementia or Alzheimers, but that quote made some sense!
@ Cougarf@n | 8:13 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Yes, I can't wait for our Cougars to beat up on our Las Vegas bowl opponent--although it really is so annoying that we get "stuck" with such worthless competition every year. We totally own that bowl game and the Pac-10. Big Game Cougars, that's our MO. Just sad we can't get some better competition in that game.
Cougs in trouble... | 8:15 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
WYO had the Utes number till the final quarter in SLC. They are the perfect team to beat BYU...small defensive line, and fast recievers. This game could get ugly in a hurry if the Cougs can play some ball-control with Unga and co.

WYO would love to run the score up if given the opportunity...and we all know that Hall and co. will give them plenty of opportuities this Sat. Not to mention the plethora of stupid defensive penalties we seem to have in Laramie. Best of luck in Sheepville.
StopIt | 8:27 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
BYU is still playing? Wow! Please tell them to "stop it!" Sorry I woke up too soon. Wake me up when Bronco is gone and Anae is unemployed. Simply put, BYU's season is over. I don't care if they win the rest of their games - it's pointless ...GO TCU!!! TCU has a good chance of being the first REAL BCS buster. TCU is the only legit team to represent the MWC.
Re: 6:41 | 8:32 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
The first "it" as in "overemphasize it" refers to the weather in Laramie in late October and November. The second "it" refers to overemphasizing the first "it". Any other simple questions?
Howard S. | 8:42 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
"Hopefully it's not too cold" says Max Hall.

Real football players welcome harsh and hostile conditions.

Not Max.....

depressed Y fan | 9:08 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I think Bronoco likes to speak in a way that no one understands him so he can never be held to his word... because no one knows what that is. I feel like anyone could be a coach, all you need to say is- If our guys execute on Defense and our offense comes out ready to play we should be fine... blah blah blah, stop talking and beat a good team, we could easily lose to Wyoming, Air Force and Utah. Hopefully New Mexico can make us their 1st win, then mabye we'll make a change in the program instead of talking about it every week. What a joke this yr is. We get all the way to 7 in talks of a NC to barley hitting 25th now on our way to another terrible Bowl game. Well at least BYU is consistent, consistent and disappointing thier fans!
Halls a Joke | 9:12 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I love how that article is titles, "BYU ready to return to Laramie" and its a picture of Max Hall getting sacked... That is a good summary of Max Hall in big games, INT's and Sacks with post game comments like "I think I am playing great" and "I cant wait for next week to play". It feels like BYU is playing in the turkey bowl every year at their home ward with a avg deacon at QB... Bring in Nelson or Heaps. Let Heaps start he made the very "smart" choice not to serve a mission so he can pull a Steve Young and "go" after his 4 yrs at BYU, ya that will happen??? Well at least Steve isnt still working on Sunday... O wait he is. Good one Steve way to represent.
Rested? | 9:19 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I agree with KC. The Cougars rested against Florida State and TCU. Love the Cougars, but disappointed they couldn't show up in their own stadium for two huge games.
Desert Coug | 9:56 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
BYU Coaching staff appears unable to get their team ready for the big games lately. If they don't get the team ready, they have a good possibility of losing 3 of the next four games.

Wyoming will be tuff. Air Force will be tuff. Utah? If they can't get up for Utah, what does it matter where they go for a bowl game?

Come On Cougs!
go Cowboys!!! | 10:02 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I am betting Wyo beats BYU this year. Go pokes!!
Round 3 | 10:13 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Let the next round of brainwashing begin. Ooooh, if we beat Wyoming, it'll show that we're a top program again. We Cougar fans know that our team beats bad teams without exception. It has something to do with the maturity level of our boys who have mostly served missions. We don't falter often against bad teams. But let's not deceive ourselves, we still can't beat good teams. Yes, Jake may help out but until Bronco is fired, this team will repeat the pattern of losing to good teams over and over again.
Better be ready | 10:22 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I cant stand watching anything to do with Utah football, but, I watched the end of the Wyoming game. Wyoming had them beat. They were marching down the field. The qb threw a good pass and the receiver for some reason fell asleep, causing an interception. Here is the point: Wyoming is a pretty good football team. My Cougs will be fortunate to get out of there with a win.
Thanks, Bronco | 10:32 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Yet another Bronco quote featuring "execute." Can anyone find a quote in which Bronco doesn't use a form of this, his favorite word?

I will pay you money.

Has Bronco named one of his kids "execute" yet? Or still just Razor, Cutter, and Blade?

BYU ready to return to Laramie | 10:35 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
No, they're not.
ref: Howard S | 10:50 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009

"Real football players welcome harsh and hostile conditions"

Cut Max Hall, a break he played high school football in Mesa, Arizona where bad weather is 60 degrees and light wind. The weather in Provo is cold enough for him.

I watch a lot of college football and most teams would love to have Max. He may not be Steve Young or Ty Detmer, but he's a very good college quarterback and BYU is lucky to have him!

GO Cougars!!
The Future Is Defense | 11:19 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
When (or if) BYU finally commits itself to creating a strong, consistent and disruptive defense, the Cougars will become a "great" football team. I look at the losses to TCU and FSU, as well as the blowouts suffered last season and I see defense as the most glaring deficiency. Max Hall isn’t the problem, giving up big offensive numbers is the problem.

Line play is where it starts. BYU has been stunningly inept at creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks and reducing throwing time without blitzing and even then it’s sketchy. Blitzing takes defenders away from coverage and if you don’t get to the quarterback, he will eat you alive. TCU and Utah create pressure with the 4-man front while maintaining an effective defensive secondary. Offensively, BYU is at least their equal, but will not attain similar success until the defensive philosophy changes from “Bend, But Don’t Break” to “Disrupt and Shut-Down”. I realize that athletes are necessary, but isn’t that what recruiting is for? Getting guys like Heaps is fine, but defense wins championships!
Bronco  | 11:28 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
is giving Salt Lake exactly what they want..a Sunday School class in pads. I've never seen a more passive, boring (bored?) football team (well, maybe last year) After Oklahoma the coaches seem clueless. I guess as long as the team doen't give the church any bad pub and wins enough to get the missionary program mentioned on national TV once in a while, the wins and losses, rankings, BCS and all that other "unimportant" stuff is secondary.
I say: | 11:41 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Go back to the real BYU Royal Blue uniforms. Whoever came up with Utah State Blue with that funky stripe on the pants should be forced to buy Utah State season tickets.
BYU | 11:43 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
goes 2-2 the rest of the way..
Go Cougars | 11:58 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
True BLue Cugars! I love my school! We are the best! Go beat the Cowboy team...with cowboy people
ocron | 12:08 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Can't the MWC just kick Wyoming to the curb? Talk about bringing nothing to the party, Wyoming is a liablity. No success with any athletics; smallest tv market in the US, lousy playing conditions, disgusting fans, etc. etc. At least Boise St. has a football team. Although, the blue turf has to go first.
re: the future is defense | 12:10 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
"Max Hall isn’t the problem, giving up big offensive numbers is the problem."

I agree we could use a better defense. But please explain how scoring only 7 points against TCU isn't also a problem???
Cynic | 12:17 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I'm not sure Wyoming is ready to return to Laramie. However, in Laramie language, Saturday may be a decent day for a football game.
Anonymous | 12:28 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
The defensive insecurity of zoo fans is always hilarious! It's like listening to a bunch of four year olds squabble over who got the biggest piece of candy. Don't worry little zoo boys with your little zoo toys, that travesty of a football team that you attach what passes for your "manhood" to probably will end up in the New Mexico Bowl; that is if it doesn't lose to Wyoming, Air Force and Utah.
Change the goals | 12:39 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Look, if Bronco is going to continue to go easy in practices and tell his players that football is only the 5th most important thing for them and he can't motivate the team and his assistants to get up for every game (especially against utah and TCU) then he should revise the team's goals.

Replace the goals of winning the MWC, getting to a BCS bowl, and some day winning another national championship with goals like:

o Play well in almost all MWC games
o Try to beat a big name ranked team once every 10 years
o Try to finish no lower than 3rd in the MWC
o Win 33% of our bowl games

I mean, a big part of fan unhappiness is due to Bronco's lofty goals that have not been achieved and that we don't seem to be any closer to achieving. So go ahead and lower the goals if you're not serious about them.
Minerman | 12:48 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Max Hall looks down field...finds anothre Kruger WIIIIIIDE open, and throws a perfect strike! Hall to Kruger, now that's become a staple here at BYU! HAHAHAHAH. Sorry, just haven't seen a Hall to Kruger reference in a while.

Good luck Cougars. I'm bettin you beat Wyoming, and New Mexico is a gimmie, but Air Force...well, after regulation they played TCU to a 20-17 loss, and Utah to a 17-17 draw. Nice thing for BYU is that Air Force doesn't really throw, at all. I'd bet money that they try a season high in passes when they play the cougars though. lol.

Then there's always the Utah game. One thing I think we all know: BYU struggles BIG-TIME against quality, fast defenses. And the one thing Utah ALWYAS has...yup. So it's BYU's mediocre offense, against Utah's top notch defense, and my Utes spaztic offense against a less than intimidating BYU defense. Should be interesting.

Heh, and for the record, I'm not a cougar hater, BYU was my favorite team growin up. But grew up and... I'm a true UTE alum baby! GO UTES!
