Silence is Not Reverence | 9:42 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Having spent 9 years in the single's program, I can tell you that silence is not necessarily reverence. Too many singles are in those pews and not even close to paying attention to the talks in Sacrament. That is, of course, unless one of the ward hotties is speaking.

I'm thankful to be in a family ward with my noisy kids. Those noises are the sounds of salvation.

Remember, you can't be saved in a single's ward.

Really?

You can't be saved in a single's ward??? Not sure what happens where you live,Chris, but there are a lot of facets of being saved, and the Gospel is just as true in a YSA or SA ward as anywhere else.

Having moved into a family ward, I enjoy the reminders of family action around me as I still focus on what the Sacrament is about.

In either kind of ward, what you get out of a meeting is connected to what attention you put into it, hottie speaker or not.

Let me amend that...

You can't inherit all the Father has for you if you remain, voluntarily, in a perpetual state of singularity.

There are no single wards in the Celestial Kingdom.

Better?

I sit by myself with 5 young children every week in Sacrament Meeting. Sometimes my kids are reverent, sometimes they struggle. This is a difficult balance because I am a firm believer in the fact that children need to be in church; not in the halls; not in the foyer; not at home in front of the TV. However, they can be a distraction to others. The ultimate truth is: whether or not you feel the spirit depends (for the most part) on you, not on those around you. Salvation is independent of any marital or familial status; I believe reverence is too.

I admire and support your efforts to keep your five kids in the meeting, even when they struggle with reverence. I thought of my own mother when I read your words. Your children will probably grow up to be faithful disciples of Christ and will have patience for others whose children sometimes struggle with reverence.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

— John 3:16 (KJV)

This is the God (singular) I worship. This is the promise made without exception. Do you really believe that if you choose to remain single you cannot be saved? That is close to blasphemy and certainly not Christian.
