Congratulations Coach Whittingham. It's too bad that there are more BYU-haters than Utah fans these days. Perhaps if more of those Haters would buy tickets and become Ute fans, RES would be sold out.

Once again, Congrats Coach Whit.
real-ist | 1:58 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Observation-ist, you are wrong about there being Byu haters. Byu,Bronco, and their fans are irrelevant. I wonder how many of observationist celebrated the win over Bye this weekend.
Re: Observation-ist | 1:40 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
You appear to be a Ute-hater who is very misinformed. Utah has sold out 9 of it's last 10 home football games. There are plans being made to expand RES to hold more Utah football fans.

Please don't flatter yourself thinking Utah fans are Cougar-haters. Most Ute fans aren't spending much time thinking about BYU anymore. TCU is our stiffest league competitor in football and UNLV is our toughest competitor in basketball.

Now back to the article, congratulations Coach Whittingham! Our program is truly blessed to have you as our head football coach. Winning 20 of the last 21 games is quite a feat! You have taken recruiting to a new level and have a solid coaching staff year after year. I hope you stay long enough to break all of Ike's records.

Go Utes!!

Coach Whit | 5:01 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009

Whittingham was 16-13 in his first 29 games as Utah head coach. 27-2 in the last 29. Go figure.....
rvalens2 | 6:39 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
To Coach Whittingham:

Thanks for everything you've done. You deserve your success.

I'm sure your Dad is up in heaven sporting a grin from ear to ear.
Up 5 | 6:43 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Other than he wanted "Utah by 5" it was a mistake to go for 1. At least you finally put a play caller in charge instead of the inposter QB coach.
Anonymous | 7:07 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Excellent win. Great call on the quarterback change. No doubt, Utah has exceptional coaches.

The pics provided by the DN in the photo gallery with the crowd in the background look fantastic. What a fun atmosphere at RES last night.
Re: Observation-ist | 7:30 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
RES has been sold out, for the past 18 games in a row IIRC.

However, your basic point is valid: Most Utah fans still hate BYU more than they love their own team.

When Whittingham has another down season -- heck, if he fails to beat BYU and TCU this season -- you'll start hearing Ute fans calling for his head, much as they did during his first couple of years and after the 27-0 UNLV debacle.
Old Coach | 7:50 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
No, that was not the problem. I know of many families that attend Utah games on a regular basis but halloween changed what their kids wanted to do. It was the trick or treat night that cut back on attendance. Maybe we should be amazed that it was only just less than 200. By the way, the blackout might be fun, but they look too much like the Aztecs for my liking. The Utes are red, I like it that way.
Agree | 8:22 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
A 7-1 record and the Utes can't get a sold out stadium...this is embarrassing...I agree with the previous comment that the BYU haters should spend more time supporting the Utes than bashing on the Cougars. It is only a 45,000 seat stadium, come on! Congrats Coach Whittingham
It was a mistake | 8:35 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009

that BYU could not do more to lure Whit to their side.
More money, more power could have done it, Holmoe.

Shame on BYU!!!
SoCalUtahFan | 8:36 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009

Congratulations to Coach K and to the Utes.

More victories to come the rest of the year and many upcoming seasons!!!
True Blue | 9:00 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Well done Coach Whittingham. Maybe someday you'll consider coaching BYU. One can only dream.
Anonymous | 9:02 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Oh, come on. RES will always sell out from now on as long as Kyle's around. Except for Halloween night. It was a stupid time to have a game, not that they had any control in the matter, and they STILL came within 180 of selling out. I'm one of those that would have been there, but had trick or treating duties with the kids. It was just bad timing. Anyway, Congrats Kyle!! You are a great coach!

I loved his comment about not knowing any of those random stats until they tell him! haha

GO UTES!!!!
True to the Blue | 9:02 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Coach Whittingham is an outstanding coach and deserves every accolade given! Although I am an avid BYU fan I attend every Ute event when it happens in San Diego. Thanks Utes for representing the state and the conference well and thanks Kyle for being a great Coach and person! Best of luck the remainder of the season and keep Wynn in the game. Go Cougs!
nottyou | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Coach Whittingham is a traitor, but we'd take him back in a second. The Utah administration made a good choice (really the only choice) when they went outside the Utah family and hired Whittingham in the first place. He's become a Ute, but his DNA will always be BYU blue...that's why he's as good as he is.
LaVar the Utah Cat | 9:57 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I am a so-called BYU hater, in that I prefer BYU to lose rather than Utah to win. It has to do with the attitude of BYU fans when I moved to the state a quarter century ago and knew nothing about either team. What unreasoned arrogance they displayed. I like Utah to win, but rarely go to a football game. However, I appreciate Kyle's coaching and internal staff promotions. Good management style leads to continuity of organization and builds loyalty/confidence/secure atmosphere. The key is whether he can "pull the trigger" when staff changes ought to be made due to under-performance or other issues.
TonganUte | 10:08 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
GOOOOOD JOB UTES & COACH WHIT!!!!!! 7-1 ABOUT TO GO 8-1!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOO UTES!!!!!!!
Bob2 | 10:12 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Congrats, Coach Whit! You put players on the field who are prepared, talented and who truly love playing for their school and you ALWAYS put them in a position to win. Thanks for caring about them as students and people first and for sticking with the U when you could have gone elsewhere. I wouldn't trade you for any coach in the country.
whittingham is the man | 10:43 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
ute fans we have to realize how special the last 2 and a half years have been realistically no one expects to win 27 of 29 games and that is an unbelievable feat that should not be forgotten.
The NIT | 11:29 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Coach Whittingham is first class and he is also learning as he goes through his head coaching career. I, also, hope he is at the "U" for many, many years to come.

The Halloween night and the timing of the game - thanks TV [this is the gift the defending champion gets from the conference and the Mtn - how about the 2:00 p.m. game?] - was not helpful as it created many issues for families with young children.

Regarding tds - hate is too strong of a word - but, it's nice to see them struggle because of their unbelievable arrogance even after they get their butt beat a few times - and they are Utah's main rival.
RE:NIT | 2:58 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Let's talk after the Ewe plays TCU. I just have a feeling hey are going to eat you for lunch and spit you out, especially after losing to you last year in a game they should have won on your own field.

2:00pm saturday afternoon creates issues for families with young children? How so???

At least TDS still sells their games out even when they're not too good...like this year.

On Kyle being first class it's unfortunate that you can do so many good things, which he has, but be remembered for the onside kick when you're up 40. Being that classless is tough to overcome.
utes | 3:24 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
You know things are amazingly good when the only thing that your rival can talk about is your teams attendance... Congrats zoobies i hope all 65,000 of you that go to all the games enjoyed the fsu and tcu games!!! Keep ripping our attendance we will just keep winning!!!!!! 1 game at a time
Ernest T. Bass | 4:08 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
It's obvious why everyone hates us byu people. Were better at everything else and people too.
Big J | 4:41 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Thanks Coach Whit!
gdog 3 | 2:27 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
RES has been selling out for years. Halloween night was the first game in the last 3 years to not sell out (only 180 shy). I was one fan who missed the game on Saturday. I have missed 3 games in the last 5 years. Once to get married, another when deathly ill, and the Wyoming game because I trick or treated with the kids (until the ding dongs went to play at a friends house).
Utah Man | 8:52 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Thanks coach Whit for an unbelievable two and a half years! Thank you for your loyalty to the school, your players and the fans. I wish you continued success. To the fans of the TDS. You worry about sellouts and we'll continue to worry about winning!
Re: nottyou | 10:47 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Was Lavell's DNA always USU blue? Is that why you stole their school colors?

Re: Re: NIT - clearly you didn't understand "NIT's" comment. The Utah game was Halloween NIGHT. That caused a conflict for families with little children because of trick-or-treating. If the MWC had scheduled the game for 2 PM fans could go to the game and take the kiddies out.
misguided Aggie | 2:50 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I didn't know the Aggies owned the patent on dark blue.

That would come as quite a shock to all of the other teams who began using dark blue as one of their school colors LOOOONG before the Aggies started playing sports.

They're just sore that the wagon wheel has been in BYU's possession so long that the Aggies wouldn't know what it looked like if BYU didn't bring it to the BYU-Utah St. games.
I was there | 9:59 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
I have no problem with parents with young children missing the game to go trick-or-treating. It looked like many of those found people to use their seats anyway and reminded them to wear black. The atmosphere at RES in the second half was awesome!
Re: nottyou | 2:15 p.m. Nov. 3, 2009
While although Coach Whit may have been born byu (having played 4 yrs. and done GA work for 2 @ TDS) he has grown up A UTAH MAN (16 yrs. @ THE U) 1 yr. position coach, 9 yrs. Def. Coordinator, and 5 yrs. as Head Coach. I would say although he got his start as a Y athlete; he has been a UTE over twice as long. Many may claim to be from wherever you are born but it's actually where you've spent the most time. He started a cougar, but has grown up over the past @ decades, A UTE. We love Coach Whit and know that he will become the GREATEST coach Utah has ever had.
boyy | 12:19 p.m. Nov. 6, 2009
the best coach you Yewts have ever had is Urban Meyer...and he left for more money. if byu had offered Whittingham as much money to ooach as the U did, he would have taken the Y anyday. But as almost all coaches, he went with the money. I am happy for him that he is doing well and trust me when I say I was very excited for Utah last year. But this year is not the same team. U will lose to TCU and BYU and finish 3rd in the conference
