I thought Sorenson (sp?) set the record with a 60-something yard FG; is that not right?
Anonymous | 10:33 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Sorenson kicked a 62 yd field goal, but that was at a 5A school. Since pine view is 3A or something, I'm guessing that stephenson kicked a state record for his classification

It would be Mitch Payne, not Matt Payne

Do follow the school classification. The article is correct and the posters are correct. The 62 yarder was a class record. I also heard last year that his class record was also a state record across all classes. But can't rely on the memory to state that emphatically.

The best thing about the weekend? Watching WYO lead the running yewts for 3 quarters of a game and then watching the pollsters punish the lackidaisical performance with a drop in the polls (at least one). Sweet.

I think the mighty Cougars should have moved up 3 spots...hard to imagine Cal jumping them, but they (Cal) did actually play a game.
BYU Kickers??? | 7:53 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Nice guy but the kicking game at BYU is completely unimpressive! This guy and Payne have performed so poorly that it is interesting they would take the time to write about them. Probably not too many other high points for this team.
Time for new blood at this position...need some coaching to go along with it.

Good !!!!. Now that we took care of the punting, how about developing plays so that wohever returns the punts or the kick offs gets decent protection ?, that way who knows we can take it to the other end and score, ang get our team to relay or cheer something about. Bronco one time said that especial teams or tricky plays were not priority. But that's something that great coaches emphasize about, Urban Meyer for example said that especial teams and having tricky plays help your team winnig games, that's why while he was at Utah took himself the especal teams over and added tricky plays and the results were great. But again I'm talking about somebody that knows about football and want his team to not just win but do great. I wish bronco wasn't that proudy and follow or see what other coaches do to make their temas better even when they don't have such a good athletes. For once Bronco should start playing Nielson instead of Hall, anyways we can't win the conference anymore, so at least let's see what the other guy can do, he can't do it worse.

Stephenson is a TRUE freshman kicker, straight off a mission. He is getting better week by week. And he is going to be handling all the duties next year, and will make us proud.

The kid can kick, and when he has his leg fully back to pre-mission standards, he will be hitting those 45-50 yarders with confidence.

And with whoever plays QB next year, we will need it. There are going to be games that are won based on completing every drive with a score, even if it is 3 points.

The yewts kept themselves in the game both on the scoreboard, but more importantly MENTALLY with the three FG they kicked before they finally put things together.

The ONLY knock on this kid this season is TWO kick-offs that went OB, for where he was six months ago? I can live with that.

Re:7:53: I don't think you know what you are talking about if you say Stephensen's kicking at BYU has been bad this year. Stephensen's punting is exceptional and his punts were one of the only bright spots in BYU's performance against TCU. The placekicking and kickoffs have been awful, but Stephensen hasn't been doing the placekicking. His early season kickoffs weren't great, but he's gotten much better in that department. In fact, he wasn't even supposed to be handling kickoffs and only got that job when Payne was kicking 1-2 out of bounds every game. If he's still around when we get Sorenson back and healthy our kicking game will be exceptional as Sorenson will be handling the placekicking and stephenson will keep booming punts.

He probably could still make the dismal BYU basketball team. They could try kicking the ball instead of shooting it
Cynic | 12:26 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
He and Unga were the only highlights for BYU during the TCU game. After BYU's next four games I'm sure he'll have punted enough to qualify for national honors. (We can only be hopeful)
Cougar4life | 1:45 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Yes Justin Sorenson kicked a 62 yarder which is actually the state record for all classifications he kicked it his senior year for Bingham High School against Jordan High School (i personally witnessed this kick and soon after it was made the jordan student section the BYU fans that is started chanting BYU BYU BYU) as for Stephenson he is a great punter better than sorenson so it will be good when Sorenson returns from his mission becuase we can get rid of the lesser payne...and we will have a POWERFUL kicking game and a POWERFUL punting game!!! (i also witnessed last season justin sorenson practicing at halftime against utah state kick a 70+ yarder no i promise you im not kidding!!! 70+ yards) the Special teams department looks bright!!!

BYU Kickers;

You do not know too much about punters--a 47 yard average in any game is very good--he did his job super well against TCU so wake up and criticise when you know what you are talking about--have a great day. Oh!! check out punter averages through out the nation--let me know what you find out.

Thanks for the information!!!
