Utah Jazz: Sloan already frustrated over defense

the Jazz have played sporadic defense. Last year they would play with teams for 3 Qs and then turn it on at about the 8 minute mark if they had any chance of winning. Sometimes that worked and often it did not.

The Jazz played 3 Qs of defense against DEN then had a really bad spot after AK got mugged by Melo and Maynor got abused. Brewer could not stop Lawson and it all broke down.

The Jazz played defense when the had to against the Clips and decided to turn it on in the 4th Q (shades of last year).

At least this year Sloan is staying on the defense campaign and the press seem to be helping out. The players will respond if the fans, press and Sloan demand defense.

Sloan is in a weak position with so many players out. He really can't bench anyone for bad defense. He is already playing rookies and Fez and Koufos because he has to play them.

When the Jazz get to near full strength Sloan will have more flexibility in enforcing the defense instead of just complaining.

Defense takes depth because it takes effort and causes injury.

You are just wasting your time. Your arguments are so weak sometimes weird. Why defense is bad because not every body playing. Deron, Brewer Ak Boozer Memo> who plays defense AK and Brewer sometimes that's it. And Clipps 4Q was different. Price, Brewer, AK, millsap, Fes all played team defense and see Jazz won. No Boozer Memo same time. Let Deron run team not just scoring.

Did anyone notice the lineup when the Jazz "turned on" the defense the other night?

I think it was:

Price
AK
Brewer
Fess
Millsap

This is the lineup that put the brakes on the Clippers. They did not have trouble scoring points either because they got high % shots off Clipper turnovers and their defense.

How many "starters" do you see in that lineup?

Not many.

The starters are not playing enough defense..they are still relying on their offensive talents to beat teams because it is easier and funner to score vs. work on the defensive end.

Credit Sloan for going with players that played some D to spark the team into the run to win the game.

Sloan can only do so much. He has done everything but go out and play for them.

The starters better get their defensive effort where it needs to be or we will just be another "offense only" flash in the pan like last year.

The Jazz only allowed 38 points in the second half and that is because the Utah Jazz all defensive team was in for a lot of it... when you have Price Brewer Millsap Kirelenko and Fez in the game people will have problems scoring. Other than Fez who is just big and erases a lot of mistakes with size, the other guys can play man on man and stay in front of their guy... we need to use this line up a lot more.

Good For Sloan about the D. I said it all the time last year Defense and more defense.Hustle and effort don't worry about the ego or a big paycheck or stat sheet.Just play the game with passion (on the road would be nice)Fes and Koufos can really make a huge difference this year even playing a few min or in lineup matches both have to be ready and working hard all-all-all year long.I truly hope the D just keeps improving a little here a little there not just one great defense effort now and again. Go Jazz

1- Kyrylo Fesenko
2- Kosta Koufos
3- Paul Milsap
4- Ronnie Brewer
5- Ronnie Price

What's so hard to understand about that?

Well so are we for various reasons, but then we're not in charge here. We only pay for it all.

Upset over Defense? What defense is that?
Brewski | 6:43 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I think them two big young guys want to defend. Maybe we should play them more and let ones who rest on defense go rest on the end of the bench. I thought I heard that was the plan this year anyway. Lets see who was it said that the ones who don't want to play defense would be benched in favor of the ones who do?
Get Rid Of Sloan | 6:44 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I'd rather be at the bottom of the standings rebuilding the Jazz than go another year with Sloan.
eb | 9:24 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
So when is Dwill going to get benched for his lack of D?
Stickly | 10:35 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Who says playing defense isn't as much fun as scoring? Usually good defense leads to easy scoring! And there is nothing more fun than blocks, steals or stuffing someone. Picks up your team as well as the crowd... and wins most games!!

I'll take 5 Harprings any day!
King Black | 12:27 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Just to let everybody know the Jazz are not the only team who gave up 100 points this season.
re:Stickly | 10:20 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Unfortunately most of the players disagree with you.

They would just rather shoot.

What is going on is like the socialism our government is trying to implement.

The players who do play defense get sick of playing it because they have to cover for all the people that don't and ultimately it is no longer worth the risks when the reward is taken away.

The citizens who work hard and make alot of money only to get it stolen from them in the form of taxes by the government get tired of producing and ultimately stop producing to support all the people who are not working....or doing only the minimum

It does not work in sports and it won't work in life.

AK's defensive prowess was taken out of him by a bunch of lazy nondefensive team mates who make no effort. He gets tired of risking his body when his team mates stand as witnesses while their men roll in for layups.

It de-incentivizes everyone.

Until CJ gets back healthy we won`t have a shut down defender, one that can constantly shut down the other teams best player,we are a losing team til he gets back

This season is already playing out a lot like last season for the Jazz. Injuries and poor defense will prevail. The one bright spot? The Knicks are already 0-3, so a high-lottery is potentially on the table. The question is will the Jazz use it on a potential superstar a la D-Will? Or will they instead go after the guy who best fits the Jazz's "system and culture?"

CJ...Lock down defender??? Did I miss something??? Miles go have a little nap now and eat a popcicle.

Miles

You are a joke - you say AK defense was poor against Melo (where he scores 30 points) and then the next two games Melo goes for 40. CJ Miles is not a good defensive player. Please stop posting. He does not rotate, he doesn't take charges, he get beat off the dribble, he gets pushed around.

Based on two games:
Last year the Jazz starters stunk we were outscored most quarter. They dug themselves into a whole almost every game. The second unit came in and brought us back.

AK and Millsap are the key to the defense. Last season the only time where we saw great defense was when AK and Millsap were in the game. AK needs to be on the court every minute Millsap is playing. AK, Millsap, Price, need to be playing more minutes
Miles | 2:04 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
You clowns are the joke, you don`t see CJ`s potential and year by year improvement,he is by far the best player on this team, and will be an All-Star this year
NIce D | 9:27 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Jazz are getting schooled by Rockets. Same story every year. We need to play Defense. Talk is cheap. Jazz will be lucky to go .500 with this defense. Trade some players (Boozer, A.K.) and get some defensive players.
