Let's go RSL! I would love Chicago to host the Eastern Championship.
todd from santa ana | 6:56 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Unfortunately, I had to go out and miss the game. Congratulations. Rob Findlay has to be the team mvp. I thought this game would be low scoring, defensive minded.

If you guys could summarize how Real attack did and who did best etc, also the attendance what was it?

Terrific job guys, clean at back and 1 goal win, Be grateful. We got couple chances here. A tie advances us into the semis which is terrific, Or if Columbus wins even if they win by just 1 goal, then we would have a 30 min sudden death game to try and win before penalties/

FANTASTIC!

It was very defensive minded by Columbus, and really not as clean by Real Salt Lake. After some very surprising substitutions, like Morales for Mathis and Beltran for Rusell (both Morales and Beltran were playing really well), Movsisyan got the break we needed. I would say it was more Movsisyan in that goal than Findley, but Findley is winning some hearts for sure.

RSL was playing poor, Columbus was tanking out. We are just glad that at least it wasn't a tie. Playing with a tie at Columbus gives us only a very bleak chance to win.
Great win | 9:39 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Columbus played bunker ball. Sooo glad to see them get burned by it. Although away on Thursday, the win forces the Crew into the opposite of what they did tonight. They must open up and play for a win, which is a style that will favor RSL.

Take it to em boys!!!
Go RSL!
Chaco | 9:46 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
I see the change in substitution pattern as an attempt to rest Morales and Espindola for the second game.

Beltran had a very good night with only one breakdown that resulted in a shot on goal.

Wingert had several problems.

I was very surprised to see Williams left in so long as his play significantly diminished as the match went on.

I believe the attendance was around 11,000
seth | 9:58 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
how does a team get to the playoffs with a 2-11-2 record? Only in the MLS i guess...
No tie? | 10:18 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Sad. How very, very sad.
re: seth | 10:19 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
the article made a mistake. the 2-11-2 record is rsl's road record, not their total record. their total record was 11-12-something
fmouse | 10:21 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
2-11-2 is their on the road record. At home they are 9-1-5 ( which is number one for the league )Hopefully there will be one more game at Rio Tinto this year.
re seth | 10:33 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
the artical did not mention that it was the "Road" record.
elrey | 10:36 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
sorry fmouse there will not be any more games at rio tinto this year. If we beate out columbus than we will play the winner of chicago or new england at there home. than if we get passed them its the MSL cup at Seattle.
Play for a Tie? | 10:46 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Only in soccer can you enter a playoff game and only put out enough to force a tie. Saw the same thing the other night in Seattle when Houston played for the tie and was successful. at least Columbus failed tonight.

I sure hope that RSL doesn't play for the tie on Thursday. Something is wrong when you can form a defensive cacoon around your goalie and then only make half hearted attempts to score and if successful be rewarded with another game.

Even down 1-0 in the last 5 plus minutes, Columbus did not go into the all out attack mode. It was as if the 1-0 loss is acceptable because they think they can win by at least 2 on Thursday. Strange.
Spooky game! | 10:52 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
The game tonight was mostly attended by ghosts as it appeared most of the seats were empty. Americans may hate soccer, but it's apparently very popular in the afterlife.
J Crunch | 1:33 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I hope we can hold on with only a 1-0 lead. It was good to finally get the goal there. When Yura entered, the attack really seemed to pick up. One note about Yura, the guys on the post-game call-in show (Spence and Trey) indicated that if Randers FC ends up getting relegated, Yura is not obligated to play, and with them currently in last place by a long shot, it seems very likely that will be the case.

And to todd:
If we're tied in aggregate goals after the next game, it goes to a 30-minute overtime (2 15-minute halves), but it is NOT sudden death. They play the entire overtime, then PKs if still tied. Should be fun Tuesday night!
todd from santa ana | 1:42 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
11,499 shocking attendance. Very disappointing. Credit to those who went or wanted too but schedule could not. The ones that could and the whole state and community should be ashamed, it should have been standing room only,
todd on "10 men behind the ball" | 1:47 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
garbage nowadways rarely works. Allardyce of Blackburn ordered his "boys" against Manchester United at Old Trafford to soak up pressure. The first half it worked, one piece of brilliance from Berbatov changed all. He even said last week "oh even losing 2-0 to Chelsea" looks better than losing 0-4 like he did.

This cannot be the mind set. You cannot take dumb chances. I think Real should at least in the first 20 minutes pressure hard and take it to the Crew. If we do not score, play mostly conservative but still counter attack hard when there and take advantage of mistakes. More important, keep tackling, keep building and keep possession

That's so clever how you were able to make a connection between Halloween and empty seats. Your mommy must be so proud.

What's even more "Scary" and "frightening" were all of the empty green seats at the Jazz season-opening home game Friday night. What's even more "Terrifying" than that, is that it wasn't even Halloween and it was still empty.

Take it to 'em next week RSL!
STH | 7:03 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Yeah, attendance was a joke -- both ends largely empty and the corners were completely vacant. I'd like to know how hard RSL tried to move this game forward a few hours. A 1 p.m. start would have packed the place, since all us parents had to miss in order to get costumes ready for Halloween.

Why does this team hate its season ticket holders so much?
James  | 7:13 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Your headline and opening paragraphs are much too negative. THE HOME TEAM WON A HARD-FOUGHT GAME. How about "RSL finds a way to win" or "RSL beats First Place Team" or "RSL wins a classic" or "RSL Defense is Perfect, Findlay Gets Loose" or "RSL Gain the Advantage Up 1-0". You can't become Brad Rock this early in life.
Anonymous | 7:21 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
11,499 was the official attendance. the stadium was only half full for the team's biggest game of the season...
Mathis hater | 7:24 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
An earlier start time would have solved the problem. Instead our organization remains the laughingstock of MLS.
I hate soccer | 8:18 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I hate soccer and I am going to tell everyone. Only ghost at the game. only in the mls. I also live in my mom's basement and the only friend I have is a computer. But now you all know I hate soccer.
Nussdorfer AC | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
Agreed Todd, it was a shame to have so few fans. We brought some people who had never been to a game and luckily we were sitting in a good section with lots of cheering. It was just disappointing to see so many empty seats. It was a great win game to attend.
Starting to hate the DN | 10:14 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
How come every article written by the Deseret New about Real Salt Lake is always negative. Even when they win, it's always written very negatively.
Jack O. Lantern | 10:16 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
RSL takes on Halloween and loses. STH is right -- I'd love to have gone, but I was stationed at my front door handing out candy while my wife took Ironman and the Fairy Princess door-to-door collecting treats.

Reminds me of complaints about the US national team game's attendance at Rio Tinto. You can't hope to draw people away from BYU v. Oklahoma any more than you can hope fans will ignore a major holiday -- especially one that involves their children.

Soccer is growing in popularity. But thoughtful scheduling is still very important.
OCRon | 11:21 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
The MSL is in trouble. Only three teams showed an increase in att. Seattle rescued the league. As for later, Ottawa & Vancouver join from Canada. Both those franchises will thrive. Vancouver and Seattle will be major rivals. Ottawa and Toronto has possibilies. But, the rest of the US versions are in transition. Watching the Premier League is a ton better than looking at 15,000 bored fans in N.Y.
Dude | 12:14 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
My nephew and I wanted to go to the game but couldn't because of kids and Halloween. I was very disappointed that the game didn't have an earlier start time. Why on earth would they schedule it so late?
@ Dude | 3:16 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
They scheduled it late because they knew they were going to have awful attendance either way and they would be able to blame it on something (trick or treaters) other than America's complete disinterest in soccer. Pro soccer in America will soon be nothing more than a horror story nobody will want to remember.
blah blah | 3:44 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
soccer is here to stay. attendance was bad, but you move on. go rsl.
georg | 7:15 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
I spoke with a RSL Employee and he felt after so much hype regarding having to win 3 to get into the playoffs, the short week was not enough time to sell this playoff match. I am also sure many families were forced to choose between Haloween soccer and had to choose family. The crowd may have only been 11,500 but it was a great 11,500 and those in attendance were treated to a great night of soccer. As to all the fools who keep posting how soccer is dead or dying in America, Must really suck to be so wrong, so long, so ofton and so lacking in your own interests that you have to post here.
RSL will get the tie in Columbus and move on,
Most likely agianst Chicago who will get thru with a goal or two by Brian Mcbride.
todd to georg | 7:52 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
it will need a comeback because New England beat CHicago 2-1, i think New England frankly maybe a better team than CHicago when healthy.
cowboy | 8:57 p.m. Nov. 1, 2009
"11,499 was the official attendance. the stadium was only half full for the team's biggest game of the season... "

Errr, a playoff tie may be the most important game of the season, but the highest attended game is the biggest.

1-1 against Colorado in June was attended by 19,546, so obviously the RM rivalry is a bigger motivation for fans to come out.

It must be said that soccer crowds are highly elastic, with many factors to take into account (such as lead-in times, scheduling, pricing structures etc) so attendance at one match is no indication of any long-term trend.

The national economy has had a big effect in 2009, but the soccer economy is growing and is consistently posting higher trend growth figures than the other four major US sports - so listen out for the first mentions of the 'big five', it'll happen soon.
whoop de doo | 12:31 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
There are a lot of very unintelligent posts on here. First off if rsl is playing for a tie they will probably lose. It's the same in every sport. If you dont play to win you wont!

The bashing about the attendance really needs to stop. Soccer is a marathon sport. Most fans acknowledge this and dont take the playoffs too seriously. The average attendance per game was up this year from last..

RSL is not the laughing stock of the mls. In fact they average in the top half of the league in attendance. I would say the laughing stock of the league would have to be the san jose earthquakes. They're horrible.

People seem to think they have to put soccer in some sort of place. They can do it all they want i still love the sport and RSL.
todd to whoop de doo | 1:43 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
gee where you there Saturday? I have an excuse I live in Orange County,,,By the way, if it is the last home game of the season, they should have had 20,000.

The time stunk I know, but what can one do...1 pm local would have been beat time, even noon kickoff. I think Air Force always kicks off home football games at noon local time....That way everyone can beat traffic get home and still be home for the national holiday known as gremlin and goblins
georg | 8:15 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Todd I inderstand New England won but Chicago will get thru playing at home. They were dangerous in New England and will make up the one goal deficet.
Really hope that same thing will not happen in Columbus but Columbus has really struggled to create any offence in the past 5 or so matches so I am hoping that will carry thru one more match.
rsl | 9:46 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
You think it was bad here at Rio Tinto? the New England game only had around 7,000 fans at the game!
Anonymous | 12:03 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
RSL found a way to make it happen! RSL was one of 3 teams to show an increase in attendence from last year. Despite 11.5K on Saturday, RSL is successfully pulling in crowds over the long run. RSL is here to stay (sorry haters but get used to it).

GO RSL, don't bunker down Thursday. Come out attacking; the yellow boys won't expect it and you'll be up a goal in their place.

RSL, RSL, RSL!
STEVE-O | 5:34 p.m. Nov. 2, 2009
1- I went to the game and the attendance looked like more than 11,000 to me.

2- Halloween night isn't the best time to hold a playoff game in the MLS because it's a family atmosphere.

3- RSL still has high attendance when compared to the rest of the league.

4- Any games beyond the regular season is simply BONUS money for the organization. Every ticket sold was extra cash.

5- Go RSL!!!
