Are walkable areas easier on waistlines?

As much as I have enjoyed living in quiet out of the way neighborhoods, I must say that I do get a bit of additional excercise living by Redwood Road. I see many of the same people walking to the 7-11, Walgreens, Albertsons, etc. daily and even that little bit of excercise seems to help them. There are those who still get into the car to drive a block, and they are the heavier folks.

I believe this study is flawed. The reason people in these areas are thinner is probably due to age. Younger people tend to live in apartments and multi-family housing, which tend to be closer to fast food establishments. Younger people tend to be thinner.
