Jody: Boozer is 3ast shy of a triple double and the best you can do is, "he struggled again from the field..........?"

CL | 11:11 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
It was good to see Fes play extended minutes and produce like he did. We need him in the middle. He showed he can be a contributor. Both Fes and KK will get better and better if they are given time.
If Sloan would call a few plays for Fes and let him use his big body down in the low block he could score and create problems for the other teams. Even though Fes played well, he didn't have anything called for him. I'd like to see what he could do if they went to him in the low block.
Iv'e said this before but for the Jazz to improve they need their two bigs to become big contributors and CJ to improve and be someone who can create and take some of the load off of DWill.

The defense was terrible, and frankly disgusting for 3 quarters. To show defense is a mindset and I do agree with Jerry when he says anyone can work hard and defend-it took mostly the 2nd unit to show the way it was done.

Down 84-78, 15 straight points. On the floor during the run Price, AK, Fez, Millsap and Brewer. I saw intense defense I have not seen in sometime. The thing is when DWIL< Boozer came back in even they made a better effort. I felt despite offensively them having big game, Boozer although much shorter than Kaman seemed to go through the motions in guarding him.

I am glad Fez got a chance to come back in and play meaningful time and not be buried on the bench after 2 early fouls. Millsap and Brewer were incredible in the 4th quarter run. Price ran the team impressively.

Koustos had some good moments also. The game was very concerning until this run. Thankfully, we avoided (0-2) and hope some momentum from this now carries to Houston

Fez and Koufos  | 11:37 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
combined for 15 points and 11 rebounds in about 32 minutes of play. That is about what they would have gotten out of Okur.

Fez and Koufos will only get better with experience. As they learn the plays and position, the ball will come to them. They are doing pretty good just by grabbing all of the garbage they can. It really helps. Playing them is a vast improvement over running the starters into the ground or playing the back ups of the past.

To bad they did not get used last year, they would be a lot better this year.
New look Jazz???? | 12:04 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
I struggle every year watching other teams get better in the off season and the Jazz seem to do nothing. After watching preseason and the first two games I hate to burst everyone bubble, but it's still the same team from last year and we will limp into the playoffs again and get knocked out in the first round. If anyone wants to disagree with me just look at the first three quarters tonight! I just hope we don't blow the New York Lottery pick and KOC NEEEDS to make some adjustments for us to remain competitive.
Going Through The Motions | 3:16 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
This year will be tough to handle knowing what the end result will be. Just like last year, this group of players will fold in the first round of the playoffs. And that is a BIG IF they can secure the 8th spot.
Setting the Tone | 4:25 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
I called Carlos Boozer to task after the Nuggets game for his failure to set the defensive tone by stepping-in to challenge an open shot in the paint very early in the game (at 3-0 in the game). Tonight, I would honor some of the players that helped set a different tone for the fourth-quarter surge.

It began with the amazing shot hit by Millsap on a rebound-and-shoot shot while falling and being fouled as time expired in the 3rd quarter. That extra effort seemed to ignite effort from him and several others going into the 4th quarter, despite a so-so effort the first three quarters.

Millsap kept up that amazing effort the entire quarter. His hustle seemed to inspire several other as his effort was matched by several nice hustle plays by Kirilenko and Price. Boozer even made some very nice defensive plays in the final quarter, along with some nifty passing. Good job tonight, Carlos.

The next task is to continue the fourth-quarter effort against Houston and on the road against Dallas.

almost the same line up that came back against the lakers. even sloan ought to notice that. hum

The national media says it too, the Jazz don't play defense.
Cowboy Joe | 7:30 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
How can Fez be the third heaviest. Last time I checked 300 lbs and Yao's 300 pounds are the same. Wouldn't he be tied for 2.
I agree that this appears to  | 8:25 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
be the same team as last year, but there are important differences. This team should not be hostage to Boozer this year. He should play when he plays well. Sloan was always dependent on him in the past. Boozer has not returned to form yet.

The Jazz (when Korver and CJ are back) are less dependent on Boozer as AK can be moved to PF and Koufos can play PF to some degree. The team knows they can compete without Boozer.

Sloan is realizing that Fez and Koufos are capable of playing when necessary. When Okur gets hurt the team does not fall apart. The team will get better as Fez and Koufos get more experience.

Right now the team is weak in the wings and that makes the inside game hard. It will get somewhat better when Korver returns. CJ also sometimes shoots well from the outside and sporadically defends well.

When this team is healthy the biggest weaknesses are PF (to short), wings (can't shoot) and defense. The Jazz turn on the defense at the end when they want to win at home. They folded the defense in DEN (road) in the last 8 minutes.
Can't do it | 8:27 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
I can't watch the Jazz. I still can't believe the Jazz didn't get rid of Loozer Boozer. I tried the Nugget game, but Loozer performance just confirmed my dislike for the man. I'm officially hoping the Jazz don't make the playoff. In fact I'm hoping the wheels fall off and it's all because of the chemistry keeping Loozer has created. I think Larry wound have understood the down side of keeping Loozer, chemistry, defense, fans, ticket sells (down), etc... The best thing the fans can hope for this year is no playoff and the Knicks to not make the playoffs. That way we can get rid of Loozer and have two lottery picks. I never thought I'd say this, JUST FALL APART and let the missiles fly. It all O'Conner's and Loozer fault. I wonder how many other fans feel the same????????????????

I do feel sorry for D-Will, he is the man.
Big Defensive Shotblocker! | 8:36 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
You name one big defensive shotblocker that is 7' 1" & 300 lbs. that is available and is better than Fez. (Kofa Kustos ain't a bad backup for Fez.) The Utah Jazz are better when Fez is on the court. Frank Layden was laughed at when he used a big tall lug named Mark Eakins. Later he became known as Big Mark. The Utah Jazz were better when Eaton was on the floor. Even though you look at the man's skills and you wouldn't say he was a top 10 center, the team was clearly better with him on the floor. Tommy Heison called him "The Human Detour". Don Barts said "Its just like planting a huge tree right in the middle of the paint". Hubie Brown once said "Mark Eaton is a Big Big Man!" Same goes for Fez. If managment can not see this I will not renew our suite for 2110-11. This big Ukranian may end up being one of the most effective Big men in Basketball. Wake Jerry up, Phil! You know what a Big Big Man can do to shut down the 4 lane freeway that leads to the Jazz blue paint.
Excuse me? | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
"combined for 15 points and 11 rebounds in about 32 minutes of play. That is about what they would have gotten out of Okur."

Such a dumb statement. You cannot compare numbers. Okur stretches defenses. He's a three point threat that allows the Jazz to get more layups and creates more room for Boozer in the paint.

That being said, I was impressed with Fesenko last night.

What??? | 8:57 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Run plays for Fez?

Why? He only missed one shot and made 10 point "within" the offense last night. The jazz run alot of pick and roll and Fez got several "rolls" to the basket that naturally develop as a result of the Jazz offense. Lots of players get chances for touches in this offense regardless of what play is run because there is about 5 different options based on what the defense allows.

Too many teams run plays just for certain players and they force it because it is a play for them. The Jazz players are taught to take what the defense gives and pass until you get it. IT IS A THING OF BEAUTY WHEN THE PLAYERS RUN IT PROPERLY.

RE: Fez AND Koufus

They could not play last year because Fez was too fat/out of shape and Koufus was COMPLETELY lost on the floor. Sure we could have played them and lost more games but that is a tough decision to sit Okur down when he is the 6th best 3 point shooter in the NBA and put in Koufus in instead? Brilliant!

Now we know why you are not a coach!
quit whining | 9:13 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
The clippers took the lakers to the final 30 seconds before losing. Does that mean that the Lakers are going to be horrible, and lose in the first round. It is a long season, and we were without three of our players. Jazz have the potential to go far barring any serious injuries.
Didn't the Jazz win? | 9:48 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009

Come on Todd, don't you know Jerry is the guru of defense. His philosophies are taught from the grade school up through the college ranks. He was dozens of books and DVD's on the market that are number one sellers. Jerry is the man. Jerry is irreplaceable. No one does it like Jerry, that's for sure!!

Move Okur to the 4 and use Fes and Koufus at the 5. Why wouldn't that work at certain points of the game?
todd to miles | 11:16 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Miles, Jerry wrote Defense 101, the philosophy is among the best ever. Wooden, even Rupp used it with theyr'e teams. Jerry is like Mount Rushmore. He figures to outlast Connie Mack and Casey Stengel for tenure. I bought 10 of the books last week and stacked them right next to my bed, so when i needed reminders at a glance i could look at them instead of watching tapes like last night first 3 quarters.

Who is this O'Connell? Why is Dave Checketts, or Frank Layden not running this franchise. Who fired Dave Checketts & Frank Layden? Why is Scott Layden not the coach? Who is in charge of this outfit? Where is the Jazz-Tribune & The Jazz-et News? We need to play Fess Parker and Kostin Koulfus more minutes. Why is a big Okur allowed to roam around out on the perimeter. Do you think he is going to snag all of the long rebounds? Who will Patrol the Paint? Oh, yeah! I forgot Boozer was down there ready to stop everything inside. That'll make ya sleep better at night.
Jake | 11:48 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
For Nevada Fan: The Jazz offensive structure calls for the majority of their offence to run thru the PF. Okur doesn't fill the bill at the 4. He doesn't pass well, and he has "NO" back to the basket game. Play him at the 4 or 5 makes no diff. He'll still camp out at the 3 point line and jack up jumpers all night.
Salt Laker Fan | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Ya'll are right. The Spazz already look like they're just going through the motions collecting their paychecks. They don't have the heart and the team cohesion they did in 2007.

I'm looking forward to see the Spazz go up against the Lakers in the First Round once again. Four and out against Kobie and the boys!
Sneaky Jimmy | 12:39 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
They had to come from behind against the Clippers (without Griffin). That says it all. 9th place in the west.
Henry Drummond | 12:59 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
I have to admit that watching Fez is a lot of fun. He's 300 pounds, seven feet tall with a this bashful boyish face who kind of clumsily smashes his way to the basket and blocks shots. I'm glad he's doing so well this season. He'll be a great replacement for Jaron.

Nevada Fan | 8:18 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
To Jake: That's a fair observation and I won't disagree, but with that said or should I say he isn't that good of a Center from what you stated.
Trust me I am not looking for a debate, but with him at the 4 and booze at the three you just added a lot of length to the team. probably not as long as the Lakers, but a lot longer than we are now.
To Miles | 12:59 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
You are a liar. You said if Matthews wasn't cut and played for the Jazz that you would post here anymore. He wasn't cut and he plays for the Jazz, but yet you are still here posting nonsense. Go away.
Rich | 8:12 a.m. Nov. 2, 2009
Excellent article. Fesenko's inciteful and spot-on quote should be printed in big letters and posted on every locker room door and next to every section number in the arena:

"We executed, we were playing defense, helping each other and we get lots of layups. That's what led us to victory."

Note: The Jazz lost games last year as well as the first game of this season by doing the opposite of what Fesenko found so satisfying about the second half of the Clips game. Eventually it should dawn on the Jazz players that you can't win when you start playing one-on-one, trying to outscore the opponent by yourself. Even the worst teams in the league will usually win if the offense of the other team is to put the ball in the hands of their top player and let him go one on one, one on two or one on three. That's because it's easy to play defense if all you have to do is focus on one or two players, and when they miss or lose the ball, then a fast break will quickly ensue. Jazz players: Play team ball!
