Brewer wanted a 5yr 44million dollar contract. The jazz were willing to offer 3years 18million. Brewer is a good player, but he lacks a realiable outside shot. He also isn't a quality defender on the perimiter. Just look what Billups did to Brewer the other night.

A shooting guard that can't shoot isn't worth much. Finally a good decision not to rush into a deal.
Fred McGriff | 2:18 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
Oh darn, I guess we'll just have to get a guard who can shoot next season.

This is what I thought the Jazz should do with Koufos and Brewer. Go ahead and put me down for not having a problem with anything the Jazz have done in the offseason and up to now. Most of the problems the Jazz have and are faced with, relative to their contracts and player personel, are the result of decisions made quite some time before this last year. If I were the money and the power, I might have done some things differently over this last year, but I don't altogether disagree with what the Jazz have done. O'Connor gets a bad rap and is hamstrung by Coach Sloan on who can be added to the roster, and then there is always the conflict of how a player will be used. Larry Miller put the organization together and now they continue to exist with him gone. Do they coexist effectively? Sometimes. Stability has been a staple in Jazz successes. I would say that it is also a problem at times. We will see in years to come if Greg Miller will be loyal to a fault like LHM was (my perception).
no big deal | 2:29 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
No big deal. Stockton always did his contract extensions during the summer. The Jazz always understood Stockton and Stockton always understood the Jazz and it always worked out fine. No big deal.
Anonymous | 3:01 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
brewer isnt that worth that much money. go get a player that can shoot and play some defence.
Re: no big deal | 3:01 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
Except Stockton isn't around anymore. Sigh.
IDjazz12 | 3:10 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
Not sure if this is good or bad but look at letting Milsap go out and set his own price did. The same thing with CJ Miles. Letting these two guys go out and name there own price has had the Jazz overpaying them.
Not sure what the right answer is but the last two times it has not worked out so well.
Wakeup | 3:39 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
You guys are idiots. Brewer has worked on his shot during the summer and preseason. Hit hit a few really nice 20 footers against the nuggets. Ended up with 16 points. His field goal percentage was good(always is). He's still growing but for what we pay him he is a steal.
Big Jake | 3:44 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
How long will it take for the Jazz owners to realize that if they want a winning team, some changes are in order. Sloan needs to retire. Boozer has to go.
Jazz-fan | 3:50 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
How about we get some players that can play with D-will
Miles | 4:22 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
I am sure we offered him more money than we should have offered. I am sure that Brewer's agent felt he was worth way more than the offer. I don't care whether he stays or goes. He is not the answer to a championship but he is a good player at the right price.

@Cowboy Joe: I am sure that you were in on all the negociations and that is how you know the numbers! (rolling eyes)
Houdini | 4:32 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
Bettin the Jazz tried to low-ball him,now it`ll cost us more to keep him next year, which we need to do,he`s worth more than miles,no doubt who is raping the Jazz for 4 mil a year,Brewer is twice the player miles is,and at times last year was our most or second to most consistent player,he`s earned his starting job and deserves a nice raise
Cowboy Bob RE Miles | 4:51 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
that`s right miles, I knows the numbers,cause I his agent,do you understand or do`s I need to simplify it for you`s ?

learning from what happend with Milsap....let another team pull what Portland did and Brewer gets the years and more money.
The NBA owners have let this entire salary mess get out of control...and the Milsap situation will now become a standard around the league.

Mark my word!
JASPER | 6:07 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
Everyone complains how the Brewer got beat by Billups. How about all the rest of the Jazz players
they did the same.
They are all doing what is ask by Sloan.
Stay close get beat and foul.22 YEARS OF THE SAME GARBAGE. A contested jump shot is alot lower percentage than a layup.Take a night and watch another game with a top team and you will see the diffrence if you are open minded spend a couple of hours and see.
steve | 6:19 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
I agree the jazz have problems with overpaying players. While brewer is one of my favorite players on the team, you can't afford to pay him 10 mil a year. He isn't worth that. Few players are. Milsap is great, but isn't worth what we pay him. We probably should have let him go to Portland. The Jazz have a long history of mediocre players looking great because of a great coach and a great point guard. Then we give passable role players huge contracts and it causes problems because people on the team who are better than they are are jealous of those contracts and want more money. How much did Greg Ostertag cost us? His salary plus an extra 10 mil a year for Malone and 3 mil for Stockton for the next 6 years. Bryon Russel? Ok players, but overpaying them killed us. Then you look at Shandon Anterson and Howard Eisley who we didn't come to terms with. They went elsewhere and showed that they weren't as good as they looked in Utah. They looked better than they were because they played with Stockton in a well coached fundamental system.
RE: Wakeup | 6:32 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
We're idiots for getting on Brewer for his shooting? Wow, have fun in the playoffs when defenses just double down and leave Brewer open, Einstein.
todd to jasper | 6:34 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
try as an example last night Denver vs Portland, you could not be more right...

Brewer: He needs this year to prove he is an excellent player and not just a good athlete, a consistent jumper, better defense consistently. For once lets not jump prematurely. Houdini, I agree though CJ is no Brewer. If only Brewer could have a consistent jumper, remember last year "i said he had the ability to a future all star"

He is not far from being someone who can average 20

GDOG3: You are an excellent Jazz "Historian"

However, like David Blackwell II last night, I am tired of the "teases". If there is something you really want to say that you have inside info , do not beat around the bush "say it"!

Example: "do not blame O Connor, how there is a lot we do not know as he and Jerry may not agree and has more sayso"

What is the point...Please enlighten us

todd to steve | 6:38 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
how did Devin Brown do with the Jazz compared with the Spurs?

How did Eric Murdock compare with the Bucks? same with Deshawn Stevenson.

Yes Murdock he is out of the league now and only had limited success. The point is Jerry has his good points, but they are all not better here
better than millsap | 12:06 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Millsap does not play well on the road, especially offensively. Brewer is more valuable to this team than millsap.

Please resign Brewer.
Pluses and Minuses | 9:20 a.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Plain and simple there are several more reasons NOT to pay Brewer what he is asking and wait till next offseason vs. the one and ONLY reason that he MIGHT get a higher offer.

Duh!! If he does get a higher offer it will be no more than he is asking now so what have the Jazz lost? Nothing!!

Pluses for NOT offering.

1. What if he gets injured and it severely affects his ability to jump? What good is a Brewer if he can't jump? He lives by it--he dunks more than any guard in the NBA because he can't shoot jumpshots.

2. If we have to pull a trade teams ALWAYS want players with shorter contracts not long term deals.

3. The salary cap is dropping AGAIN next season and many players did not get the offers they thought they would this season. The market will drop again EVEN FURTHER next year with teams having less money.

4. He still has not proven he can make jump shots/spread the floor. Kobe/playoffs?????

5. Our salary cap problems.

vs.

1. He MIGHT get a higher offer?

Pretty simple when you write it down people.

Many of you have stated that this a bad route because of what happened with Milsap however, if the above number are true 5 years 44mil, the jazz simply cannot do that and must take their chances down the line.
Good Move | 7:36 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
Let Brewer play with some added pressure - the market can take a crack at him, and Brewer may get an unfortunate reality check (see "Boozer, Carlos; 2009 Free Agent"). The Jazz have all the leverage they need - the ability to match any offer.

With the cap likely going down yet another year, teams will be less inclined to offer the midlevel exception to a Ronnie Brewer type player.

Brewer very much could pull a David Lee next year, sign a one year offer and become unrestricted. Either way, I think we have at least two more years with Brewer to see how good he really can be.

Maximum deal the Jazz should offer? Nothing over 5 years, $25 million.
