A Highland Resident | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 30, 2009
I have known Jay Franson since 1992 when our family moved to Highland. He is an honest, hard working, family man. In those days, serving on the city counsel seemed to be an effort to make a contribution to our city; a positive "let's get involved in the community" motivation. It is concerning to me that this campaign has become so negative and mean spirited. I thought those tactics were saved for national elections.(just kidding!) Like Jay, I hope that their false accusations were simply an honest mistake. Since he has been exonerated by the atorney general's office, I'd say a public apology by those involved is appropriate and would indicate that an honest mistake was the problem, not his character. We all make mistakes. Knowing the Franson family, an apology would be graciously accepted.

Mayor Franson has been one amazing Mayor who has brought tremendous growth, unity and beauty to this city. He has clearly shown a love for the residence, employees and the city and wants what is best for all. It is so sad to see certain people making false accusation in an attempt to get her or (their) people elected. Where is the honesty and integrity we expect and deserve in a city councilperson? I don't understand the mentality of someone lying and being deceitful to get a hand-up and especially trying to ruin a good persons reputation in the process. I agree, a public apology needs to be given. If the canidates you are endorsing can't make it on their own credentials and integrity, without the mudslinging their campaign committee is doing, then maybe they are not the right choice for the city.

The city has to stay out of petty issues such as what trees we can plant and if I can ride my ATV on my own land. Next they'll tell you what type of grass you're allowed to plant.

It's interesting that the timing you quote doesn't agree with what the state has said. They received the allegations in June. Articles in the Daily Herald differ greatly and give details. Perhaps not positioned to be political...

As a former Deseret News reporter I am troubled by this incomplete, inaccurate and misleading story regarding the investigation of Mayor Franson. The State Attorney General has said only that it isn't investigating Mayor Franson. Your reporter should have reported that the mayor is under investigation by the Utah County attorney's office. Inasmuch as the DN printed comments from Mayor Franson but not from his accusers, it violates ethics explained in Journalism 101. I am sorry to say that Deseret News readers who want to know what's really going on in the Highland election will have to read the Provo Daily Herald. For accurate reporting, they may do so on the Internet.

If voters want to know what's really going on in the Highland election, they should visit with the candidates. Don't rely on the Daily Herald for accurate information. They "report" what they are fed regardless of whether it is half truths, innuendo, unfounded allegations and out right lies.

Wow, you said it. Before we moved to Highland we were involved with and followed Provo politics very closely and were absolutely stunned at how often the Herald got it wrong.
Aside from that..I,too,am happy for the Mayor and his family. He is an exceptional mayor. We are lucky to have had him the last 4 years and let's keep our fingers crossed we get him for another 4.

In keeping with a longstanding Deseret News policy of not publishing stories the day before or the day of the election, no comments will be posted on election stories Monday or Tuesday. The rationale for this policy being applied to comments is to prevent the last-minute dissemination of untrue allegations against a candidate that could influence voters.
