Anyone go to the scrimmage? What did you see?
RAW TALENT | 9:11 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
That was my assesment of the part of the scrimmage I saw.

Kim Tillie looks thicker, this returned missionary Foster, is massive and the JC transfer Watkins can take it to the hole. Also, that true freshman Henderson has alot of speed and can shoot.

It will all come down to pressure time though. Someone on the team will need to step up as the on court leader. Whether Luca, Tillie or someone else can do that, remains to be seen.

Just a side note: That Washburn kid from Michigan was out of the scrimmage but was goofing around throwing down dunks and such. Looks pretty good as well. Has a ton of energy! Good to see some of that.

GO UTES
Potential and length | 10:01 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
This is a very “long” team... not only are the tall as a group, but there are a lot of long armed Utes...

The Utes don’t have a lot of super-quick 6-0 guys , but when you think about that size they are mobile group, Foster moves well for a 7-3 player, Tillie can really run and jump for a 6-10 player and there are a slew of 6-4 to 6-7 Utes that can move well. A friend sitting next to me made a telling comment... Last year Carlon Brown really stood out on the floor as the most athletic Ute. Last night he looked like “just” one of 5 or 6 athletic Utes.

On the flip side this years squad doesn’t have the beef of some of Majerus’ bigger teams and I am a little worried about the lack of game proven shooters, but I really think they have the potential to be a very good defensive team.

A couple hundred showed up for the scrimmage?! 3,000 showed up for USU's scrimmage. Why would recruits want to go to the U?
re: Raw Talent | 10:19 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Thanks for the info. I think the combo of Tillie, Foster and Washburn will be solid down low. Tillie doesn't provide much offense, but can rebound and do the dirty work. He's always good for 5 fouls.

The key might just be Drca. If he can play under control, this team could do some damage. His problem is he's just as likely to make a great pass as throw it into the 5th row. Leaves his feet too often and gets trapped with nowhere to throw the ball.

I'd like to see our guards make a bigger effort to actually get to the rim this year. Last year it was drive and kick, no matter how the defense reacted. It's one thing to kick out when the defense sucks in, but many times Drca, Brown or Kepkay would kick out instead of going to the open rim. Especially Brown, he has the hops to finish at the rim.

I think it will be an entertaining year to see how Boylen starts to put his stamp on new guys.

Runnin Utes defend your title!!!

Go Utes!!!
Boylen | 11:05 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
This team is going to surprise many, not just here in the Wasatch Front, but throughout the MWC and the country. I really liked what I saw last night, and defensively, the Runnin' Utes are going to get after it. Marshall Henderson is a Jaycee Carroll reincarnate, and Jay Watkins will be a fan favorite.
Why come to Utah for Basketball? | 11:11 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
1) Because you get to play a real schedule, not like Stew's pastry shop.
2) You get to play in the MWC instead of the Big West, err WAC.
3) You play at a school that has a basketball history and reputaion that dwarfs our local cow college.
4) Check NBA rosters past and present count up the Utes and compare that to the number (and salaries) of the Aggie alums.
5) While you play you get to attend a superior academic institiution.
6) While some people may enjoy Logan (I mean that) many others would much rather live on the edge of a proper city. (where do you live?)
Can't wait | 12:15 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I couldn't make it last night but I'm excited to see these guys play. I like what Boylen brings to our program and this being his first year with his recruits I'm excited to see the athletisism. I'm sure it is going to take some time for these guys to gel as a team but overall, I think they are better atheletes than what we have had for the past few years.

I happy for you guys at USU that you had that many fans show up for your baskeball team - but you have to admit, that is really all that there is to do up there. I like your program but there is no need to bag on the Utes - there really is no comparison. The MWC is a much stronger conference. Utah used to be a basketball school - but with the success of the football team, and the lack of success with basketball it has reversed. I'm confident that Boylen can and will bring it back to where it was - then we will dominate in both.

Go Utes!!!

The best answer- what else is there to do in Logan? Milk cows maybe... And do you guys ever get tired of playing the sisters of the poor (see Boise football)!!!! With UNLV out there everyone is playing for 2nd, but this Utah team could be fun to watch and interesting. With Brown, Tillie, Washburn, and Watkins you will see some high flying stuff. Unlike BYU these guys can actually jump and dunk!!! -good luck Kim- it's beeen fun watching you!!!
Re: Utes | 1:10 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Hey gaggie fans. The reason the utes had a few hundred fans and the gaggies had 3,000 is because the Utes actually know how to count. They don't just look in the stands a say wow that's a lot, about 3,000.

Go UTES!!!!!!!
Aggies: | 1:54 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Wont play anyone outside of Logan
Must get JC players, cant built the right way, with HS talent
Will never win another NCAA game. What a joke, just like byu's bowl record.
Should drop down to Westminster's league.
Disco Stu is horribly over rated.
re: Utes | 3:18 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
It should have been a sellout for USU scrimmage. Their starters facing their bench will be the strongest competition that comes to Logan all year, thanks to Stu and his fear of playing good teams.
Coach B | 4:44 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Gone after another poor year! Utah has nothing.... Good luck ute fans, can't wait to hear fire coach B chatter starts.....
Watkins out | 5:26 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
So much for the athleticism of Jay Watkins. It has been reported that he has a stress fracture in his hip and will be out 4-6 weeks. Hopefully he can be back before the Utes play Oklahoma and Michigan.
Luka Drca Fan | 8:17 p.m. Oct. 31, 2009
LUKA IS A MONSTER!!! HE WILL LEAD THIS TEAM TO HE SWEET 16!!!
TAYLOR MANN | 10:31 a.m. Nov. 1, 2009
JIMMYBALL IS READY TO LIFT OFF THE PAD THIS YEAR. HIS COLLECTION OF PURE TALENT IS QUITE SOMETHING TO BEHOLD. BOYLEN AND HIS STAFF HAVE DONE THERE BEST HOMEWORK, I THINK THIS GROUP IS SPECIAL...FUTURE HISTORY WILL PROVE ME RIGHT! THESE YOUNG KIDS ARE GIFTED, (KNOWLEDGEABLE) AND ATHLETIC. WITH CARLON BROWN, WASHBURN, FOSTER, TAVITA, CYPHERS AND HIS TWO SENIORS, BOYLEN IS READY FOR THE BIG TIME STAGE. "ENCORES" ARE ON ORDER IN THE MWC.

Went to High School with Marshall.. That kid cold.. He'll be one of the best NCAA basketball players.. The BEST.
Ross | 8:13 a.m. Nov. 11, 2009
I played for Marshall Henderson's dad back in my younger years (I'm 25). Marshall was 8 back then and he was as good a shooter as any of us were. I've enjoyed keeping up with Marshall through high school and I'll be a Utah fan for the next several years as well. This kid is quick, can jump out of the gym, and shoot the lights out from outside. In a game last year, I saw him blow by his defender then dunk over 2 taller defenders in the lane for the And 1. If he doesn't average double figures this year I'd be surprised. Enjoy the next four years, Utes. This kid is the real deal. The only downside is he can get over emotional during a game. As long as his head is on straight he's going to be a great one.
