I'm Just a Girl but... | 9:43 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I love reading that Hurricane is in the Top 3 for 3A... they are such a great team and it is nice to finally have a good team come out of region 9... GO HURRICANE!!! TAKE STATE!
Counting out other teams | 7:00 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I love it when the paper counts out other teams in 3A. I think that these three teams are very good, but do not count out 3A opponents. There could be some dark horses. Wasatch, Desert Hills, Morgan, or Ceder. Each one could beat one of the favorites. It will be a good tournament.
RE: I'm just a girl but... | 8:15 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Finally a good team out of region 9. Have you been living under a rock for the last ten years?! Pine View, Dixie, Cedar, SC have always been a scary team out of region 9 when they all were 3A. Just because Hurricane has been good for the last 3 doesn't mean that finally we have something there in 3A. They are actually the last team to make a statement from the region, not the first, second, or even the third. Come on wake up, this region has been tough for years!!

It would be great to see a team from down south beat out the north for the title. Everyone seems to overlook small town teams...but my bet is they do great this first round! Look for a win from Delta...and maybe a few more small 3As. Good luck region 12 teams.
Big vs. Small | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
"We know it's gonna take every ounce of every single one of our guys to be successful on this run. There's only one team that gets to win their last game, and our kids realize that."

950+ vs. 450 or less. Slight advantage for Park City and the other big schools. A mention of Juan Diego and Judge for that matter should not even be considered in this converstation given their situation.

Good luck "small 3A schools". May the force be with you.

I love the way Big Vs. Small expressed this. The 3A classification has the Largest difference in numbers!!No other has a more than 500+ numbers change. Some 3As play schools TWICE their size, and our school has had 2A numbers for a few years, and now they lower it so we stay 3A. I would love to maybe split the 3A into 3A large, and small. It would at least give these small town schools a chance. But for now we just have to play hard with what we have! Good Luck

According to UHSAA, this is the student body population of some of the 3-A schools in grades 10-12
Ben Lomond-1009 Juab-467
Cedar-766 PC - 983
Bear River-929 Morgan - 537
Judge- 578 Manti - 431
JD- 602 Wasatch- 906
Delta-443 Grantsville- 841
Hurricane-837 Carbon- 706

The measure of a school is not how many play in sports as a team, but how well the players play as a team.
Quit making excuses why you may not win a game, if you do, your already defeated. JD Soaring Eagle!!!!

Grantsville lost more than half their population to a new school opening so those numbers arent accurite
3A Observer | 12:59 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Think about the 3 major boys sports...football, basketball, and baseball... When was the last time a "smaller" 3A school won a championship? I'm sure they can all be counted on one hand if you look back over the years.
re: bring your best | 1:06 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Thats how a JD supporter would put it, go out into the Valley and get or bring your best! As you said the measure of a school in not how many play in sports as a team but how well you get the players who are talentted to play as a team.

Just know that as long as your child and anyone elses child goes to a Private school they will never get the credit that they may deserve when they win a State Championship, Fact is NOBODY ever complains when a public school wins! So keep spending that 9000 a year for that great education. I am not a genius but I would rather put that 36000 over 4 years into my childs college education.

DN is right. There is a huge discrepancy. 1000+ enrollment vs 400 enrollment. That is THE discrepancy. Public schools draw from the Jr & Sr classes. JD draws from the Wasatch Front and beyond. Another discrepancy.
Best of luck to those new '3a' schools. You'll need it. The other programs don't need luck.. They have numbers.
Re: Bring Your Best | 2:11 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
You may only have 602 in your school, but when you have the world as your pool of talent their is a major discrepency between you and the organization that has a total of 400-600 kids to choose from.

It is not the size of the school, but the pool you have to choose from. Can you honestly dispute this discrepency?

Delta does win its fair share of wresting... but the observer stated, "The 3 major boys sport..." Wresting isn't a "major" sport...
Re: JD Fan | 2:28 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
One on one competition is a whole different story than putting 11 on 11.

2 or 3 state champions will win a State title for a team. I would bet Delta has 2 or 3 players that are better at their position than the same player/position at Juan Diego or Park City.

How about you at least compare apples; instead of apples to Grizzly Bears.

Really??
Anonymous | 4:24 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
It is a numbers game for the most part. I have children that are in a school in the same region as Ben Lomond and Juan Diego. The discrepancy is not in comparing student body sizes, but the amount of students eligible to participate in sports. If what I heard on TV the other night is accurate, 98% of JD students go on to college. It is a good bet almost all are eligible to play high school sports. I was told by an administrator at Ben Lomond there is around 30% eligible to participate. Extrapolating the numbers, it appears that Ben Lomond has the challenge of sending their 150 kids against the roughly 300 of JD. Not fair. In fact Ben Lomond should be playing a 2A schedule and Juan Diego should be playing a 4A schedule if not a 5A schedule based on eligibility of students.

Juan Diego is playing by the rules given and they do not deserve the whining from those of us who get pummeled by their superior program. They have great coaches and are the envy of the 3A schools and will win state most years. Get used to it.
To :JD | 4:53 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
JD Diego is by far the best team in the state. They will take state hands down over any competition.
JuanDiego de Santiago | 5:02 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I know for a fact that there are several Juan Diego
football players that CANNOT afford the tuition to go to school there. If they
weren't talented football players they wouldn't be
in that school. How does that happen? Are there
scholarships provided? Very unfair.
The Official | 5:31 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
So much has been said, it’s hard to find a good place to start!!! I will start with JD is not bursting at the seams with students wanting to attend JD. As far as players on their "main sports" there is not depth to their positions that they play. To say that JD draws form the Wasatch front is a bit farfetched. They draw from a very limited demographic from the Wasatch front. A couple of very good examples are, one of the OL for JD weighs a whopping 150lbs. A running back drives 30 minutes to get to school. A team can be full of very talented players, such as PG. They have 8 D-1 players, but if they don’t have chemistry or team oriented group dynamics, the team is not successfull. JD players are all driven in the same direction to reach a common goal that the team comes first. The coaches, parents, and players demand this attitude to obtain the team goals each week, month, and season. This starts from the summer workouts to the last game. Individual eligibility and drive promotes the team to succeed.
Richfield  | 6:26 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
umm, , , where are you. I thought you were going to be great this year. What happened to "who needs those bad apples" We are a better team without them. Where are you? Sound to me like you could've used a few bad a. . . and I'm not talking about apples. You ran your toughest kids off all in the name of playing time. You would rather hear your name and lose than win. Hope you are all feeling like you've really accomplished something. Now I hear it is filtering into the girls sports runing off good players so we can hear our names announced in the losers bracket. Come on Richfield. Wake up and get with the program. Losing isn't fun for anyone, especially when we should be winning.
concerned parent | 10:46 a.m. Oct. 30, 2009
to anonymous, If only 30% of the kids are eligible to compete, you have a lot more problems then the athletic programs at your school. If those numbers are accurate we are failing our children.
Re: The Official | 12:39 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
OH no say it isn't true! One kid drives 30 minutes to get to school. My kids take the bus and it takes an hour for them to get to school. When they are lucky enough to drive it will take them 35 minutes. This is not uncommon for rural schools in 3A and its definitely not just one kid. We all have our hurdles that we have to overcome. It is those challenges that hopefully make us better and why we have sports to help teach our children how to cooperate and work as a team to overcome the things in life that aren't fair. Stop the whining and just go do your best. Good luck to those who will strap it up this weekend. There will be tears and cheers because not everyone will win. That's life.
"re: the Official" | 1:55 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
If that is all you read out of that blog then you are missing the point... as usual! Open your mind to the outside of your little world. The point was : Some of you in the rural parts of Ute, or better yet the ones that think that JD recruits from the Wasatch from just don’t get it. The school draws from such a small part of the "front" that these students are what they are able to get. There are not people with blue chip talent knocking down the doors to get into JD.
SO to all of you close minded "rural folks... PLEASE quit your whining about what JD does to educate and develop their students. I am proud and consider it a privilege to attend JD much that same as you consider your students school is full of pride.
Knowing the facts about JD and how it is run would be better for you before you show that you really dont know squat about a private education and the
sacrifices we make to provide what we belive is best for our children... and what you think you know what is best for yours
re: JD parents | 4:51 p.m. Oct. 30, 2009
If JD didn't have an athletic program would your child attend there? Lets be honest lets hear your BS comments of what you would do?

OK. stop trashing juan diego. just because you are mad that they are so good, doesnt give you the right to trash talk them. they have a good team and they are really unified. JDCHS isnt just a school but a community and they all bond. thats why they are "THE SOARING EAGLE" instead of the "eagleS". we are ONE. GO JD. you guys deserve it

Park city should be good! look at the line they are big and fast, then you have they're running back who is hands down the best in state. but they need to work on the D cause JD will pass on them all day.
