Watch out, Brigham City, for developers who want to build more hotels to serve the temple users.

Go down to Monticello and see how much having a temple in their city helped. The poor little town still closes down at the end of the tourist season, and the hotels are now part of low-level chains.

And....the Monticello temple serves the entire Four Corners area. There's a lot of population centers within a few-hours drive, who should be helping to keep Monticello businesses healthy. But no.

This is where many of us attend Central elementary!!!!!!!!!!!

What a shame. The tabernacle is a beautiful and authentic piece of historic architecture. The new temple will undoubtedly be a cookie cutter version complete with a fiberglass Moroni. It will be like putting a McDonald's next door to jefferson's Monticello.
Michael Felzien | 5:11 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
This is where Lincoln school was. I went to kindergarden and 1st grad there. I remember north of there use to be an A&W long long ago. Now I believe it is the Smiths Food King. To the south use to be the Lotus Cafe. And further west my grandmothers old Farm. I hope the design will compliment the tabernacle. It's the most beautiful thing when approaching Brigham from I-15. Congratulations Brigham City.

Good for you, its' about time that this prophecy came about. The dear people in Brigham and vicinity have really earned this and I'm happy for them
Former Boss | 6:28 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
My former boss use to joke that if they built another temple in Utah, he would go inactive. That was before these in the last few years, but honestly, I think he went inactive about six years ago.
Lynn | 6:28 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I am glad they are buliding something beatful and that will be used almost every day.
Matthew | 6:41 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Groan,
Why don't you withhold judgement until you've either seen the building or at least a rendering of it before you offer and opinion. Then people might take your judgement more seriously.
A Local Resident | 6:48 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Is there enough room to build it in this small town? It seems like a small area to build one and it will be the biggest building in this tiny town. What about parking and traffic? It is such a small space on Main St. Wasn't there any other place to build a new one? Will people still be able to see the beautiful tabernacle from the freeway with the new temple blocking that view? I guess if you buy the land you can put what you want on it. I still think it's too much for a little town that has so many closed businesses and run down areas.

With all the other temples so under used, way on earth are more being built. I think it is a waste of resources and money.
The Temple..... | 7:20 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
will bless the lives of all who live there. Why would you complain that the temple won't match the beauty and design of the Tabernacle. It's the same church that built the Tabernacle that will now build the Temple. Wait and see won't you?
Charles | 7:25 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
@anon 6:57 -- When you become prophet of the LDS church you can tell the Lord that He doesn't need any more temples.

Until then, quit your whining and complaining and get a real moniker. Anonymous -- how original!
John Pack Lambert | 7:27 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I am glad to hear of the site. I am hoping we will get info soon on where the other temples announced will be built.
re. anonymous | 7:34 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
They current temples are not under used. Within a month of the new Draper Temple opening it went from appointment only to regular schedule. The people making the decisions know what they are doing. Don't second guess them. You don't have all the facts and comments like that and the one made by "groan" are just ignorant. You are showing how little you know. Keep and open mind and trust someone for once.

I, for one, am glad the church if finding a good use for my tithing. They use all the money I donate to them wisely and are good stewards of the Lords money.
Too Many???? | 7:35 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
It depends on what purpose of you think temples are used for...sounds like you are ignorant of the real purpose of these temples. They are there to help Latter Day Saints secure eternal blessings if they obey their covenants to the Lord and live according to his desires. You may have a different purpose in life, that is your choice. We who understand the purpose of these temples realize we will eventually need more to complete the work assigned to us by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul | 7:36 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
As a Brigham City resident who travels to Ogden and Logan to attend the temple, I can tell you that those temples are not under used. It is only a waste of resources and money if you don't believe in the mission of the temple to begin with, and in that case, there's probably nothing the Church could do to please you. The Brigham City temple will be a great addition to our community, will help revitalize downtown, and will relieve some of the pressure from Ogden and Logan. Hooray for us!
UtahSig | 7:47 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Wish it would have been more toward Perry on the hillside or something. I would think the area where they are proposing it seems to be on the small side.
Mike - new Utah resident | 8:49 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Because of individual perspective, knowlege and vision, a new LDS temple to Brigham City will inspire many people's lives and challenge others. That will always be the case.

Keep in mind that temples are very special buildings with very special purposes.

Are there too many? Ask the Lord...He's the one who really directs the building, the affairs and teachings of the church. There is so much work to be done in all of the temples.

While some temples may be under-used due to the large distance that some people must go to get to one, a greater reason is probably that some LDS people do not yet have a temple recommend and those that have temple recommends are not setting the time aside regularly to go to the temple.

Also, temples are designed to edify and enhance communities and their looks. As for traffic and parking...I'm sure that will be worked out. It's kind of early to speculate and think the worst.
Thank You Mike! | 9:12 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Your comment was perfectly on par with my own thoughts. There are a many temples that are incredibly busy, while others aren't quite as busy. As stated, its usually due to geographic location and the area over which it serves. Many forget that many of the smaller temples built during Pres. Hinckley's tenure are open on an as need basis. This saves a significant amount of money in operation and allows them to be used efficiently. As of late, many temples also have their own unique characteristics and design. I'm sure that in selecting this site, the architects are very aware of the need for complementing design to the beautiful Tabernacle.

The church never approaches the selection of an area for a temple lightly. There are a lot of factors involved in selecting the area. Surely the leaders in Salt Lake have decided that Brigham and its area is in need. As many have attested, Logan and Ogden's temples are often running at capacity.
Too Many Temples? | 9:28 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Either Anonymous (6;57p) is not a member of the LDS faith, or he/she does not attend ANY temple in northern Utah on a regular basis. No statement like that could be further from the truth.

As for parking, the Bountiful Temple is probably on less land than the proposed block in Brigham City with a double-tiered parking area with the lower level completely underground on the east side. This double-tiered concept could easily be accommodated at the Brigham City Temple site.
Larry M | 9:54 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
To Michael F. Lincoln school still exists and is used for a community pantry. The temple site is the former Central School site. A beautiful site and walking distance even for my ~80 year old parents.
Good grief! | 9:55 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
With all the comments and the debate it's hard to tell all of you that GOD decides where temples will be. Do you think HE made a mistake? Do you think that a new temple will be an eyesore or a detriment to Brigham City? Wow. We are surely in the Last Days...
Rob | 10:26 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
The Lincoln school does house the pantry but the front is for the Boys and Girls Club (the last I heard) which is very well used.
What a wonderful blessing for Brigham City, Perry, Willard and the surrounding areas. I was at the Ogden Temple on a weekday recently and it was hard to find parking. I think less driving will mean more Temple attendance. This will be beautiful like all the others.
Jason | 11:10 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I for one am not worried about parking. Brigham is a beautiful place it's nice to walk. Especially when I could just leave the car at home and walk to the temple. I'm excited to have a temple so close.
Steve Christensen | 11:37 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I was so happy to hear that a temple will be built in my home town. The funny thing is, When Pres. Monson announced there will be 5 new temples built, I turned to my wife and said "Brigham City, Utah." Not one second later, Pres. Monson announced "Brigham City, Utah..." We both jumped for joy!
I live in Mesa, AZ now and live 5 miles from the Mesa Arizona temple. I was also excited to learn about Gilbert, AZ getting a temple. I live 8 miles from that temple site. What a blessing it is to have a temple(s) nearby. The temple open house can be used to invite your neighbors that otherwise might not know its purpose and beauty. I know I can't wait to invite my co-workers and neighbors to the Gilbert open house.
B | 12:20 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I say the more temples, the better. If you are not a member of the church, I could see questioning the wisdom of putting resources into such grand structures. But when you understand the doctrine behind it, it makes sense. RE: Anonymous 6:57, no offense taken. It is an awesome thing that is going on here.
arjay | 6:39 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
What a wonderful blessing for those in Brigham City and what better site for the temple! It will be like a mini-temple square, with the tabernacle and the temple next to each other. Picture Christmas festivities with choirs and concerts. This is a boon to little Brigham. Lorenzo Snow would be pleased.
Linda | 7:01 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
We are thrilled to have a temple! I live right across the street from the site, and we cannot believe that we are going to have a temple in our humble little ward. What more can be said????? It is a blessing to all that live here.
Deb | 7:23 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Hooray for Brigham City!! I am excited for you. My brother-in-law is the vet there and he thought this is where it might be. I do have to chuckle though about people commenting about not having to drive "all the way" to Ogden or Logan. Our closest temple was 2 hrs away and is now closed for restoration. We now go abt 4 ot 5 hrs and still count ourselves blessed. When I got married the closest temple was 12 hrs which we could only afford yearly. Temple attendance is based on faith and dedication not just distance.
Settle Down | 8:01 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Nobody is going to build hotels to host out of towners. We live 30 miles from Ogden temple and 30 miles from Logan temple. What we have is adequate. We aren't Monticello that is far from everything. I grew up in BC and am very excited about the temple but it won't increase our traffic flow and tourism. It will simply be a place for Box Elder and Northern Idaho folks to attend. All will be able to return to their homes within an hour or so.
Emjay | 9:09 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Good and Bad: Your comments about Monticello are incorrect. The Temple has been a wonderful thing for the community and has lead to growth. The Temple brings a lot of people into town and there are a number of people who have moved to Monticello because of the Temple.

The fact is, people in Monticello don't want a lot of development. They want to remain as a sleepy little community and definitely not turn into Moab. There is positive development on the plate and it will continue to be a nice, wholesome community. The Temple is a big part of this.

The Monticello Temple has been a wonderful blessing to the community.
The Rock | 9:13 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I moved out of Utah when I was 8 years old and have lived in California, Pennsylvania and Washington state most of my life.

As a youth we used to drive over 150 miles each way to go to the LA temple. We drove even farther when living in PA. It was always a full day to go to the temple. I now live in the Seattle area. Our temple is only 25 miles away. What a blessing to have one that close, but I still only get there once a month.

If a temple were right in town I would go each week or more.

The day is not far distant when traveling even 25 miles may be either impossible or a great burden (think cap and tax and other "enlightened" government actions). The Lord is providing his people with access to temples close to where they live. His work will go forth regardless.

The Lord shows the future to his Prophets. I must assume that those who complain have greater vision that the Prophets Seers and Revelators whom the Lord has placed at the head of His church.
Orem Grammy | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I am so excited for Brigham City to have a temple--and to have it across the street from the tabernacle is a wonderful place.

I grew up in Brigham, attended school at Central School, and my mother taught at Central for many years.

Though I now live in Orem, I will take the opportunity to attend the Brigham City temple for religous reasons AND to feel a connection to my mother because of its location.

I am not worried about any of the details regarding the property, what it will look like, or the impact on Brigham City. From my past experience with the building of other temples, miracles will happen in the process and the temple will be a blessing.
Obviously Undereducated | 9:43 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
'Bout dang time.

Ogden and Logan Temple districts have long divided Box Elder County, roughly along the lines of the high school boundaries. Now LDS in Box Elder County can be united in one Temple District.

An unintended consequence? Perhaps. But good things always follow Temple construction.

Oh yeah, and Go Big Bees!
Happy for Brigham City | 10:08 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
A couple of months ago I waited an hour an a half to start my Temple session in the Ogden Temple because it was so busy. Brigham City was very much in need of a Temple. It will take some pressure off of the Ogden Temple.
Dunkin Donutz in BC | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
There is going to be a Dunkin Donutz in Brigham City, where my old school used to be? I'm shocked they would serve coffee right across from the old Tabernacle, but hey, that is progress. I wonder if they will serve black people in the main area, or make them come in the back door.
former Brighamite | 10:42 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
My family also jumped for joy. We are excited for the members who live there. I live in Snowflake, Arizona and we have a temple 2 miles from our home. It is such a blessing.
Steve Nichols | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
What a great addition to a great town. I loved living in Brigham City and it holds many fond memories for me. My parents are moving back there shortly so we will have opportunities to attend the temple and reacquint ourselves with Brigham City.
Chachi | 10:49 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
That was a very fast site announcement--less than one month after the announcement. None of the locations for the other four temples announced at the same time have been announced. The Church probably had this figured out a long time in advance.

As for the architecture, the temple will definitely be designed to overshadow the tabernacle, because of its more important role in LDS theology. Will it have traditional architecture like the tabernacle or like the pioneer-era temples? Probably not would be my guess. Certainly the Church is still capable of building that way (see the Nauvoo Temple), and it might explain why they chose the lot across from the tabernacle, if the two were to feature complementary architecture. But the temple's design will be meant to be superior to the tabernacle's. Whether it succeeds at that remains to be seen.
local 'temples' | 11:37 a.m. Oct. 29, 2009
If the purpose of the temple is to have big fancy buildings then great - go ahead and build. If the purpose of the temple is to have sacred ordinances done for as many people as possible as often as possible, why then doesn't the church design its local church buildings with dedicated rooms that can be used for those ordinances - thereby increasing accessibility and quantity???
former resident | 12:07 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
As a former resident now living in the midwest, I was so excited to hear about Brigham City getting a temple. It seems fitting to have it next to the tabernacle, and I am positive it will tastefully compliment the historic tabernacle. Congratulations Brigham City, you have earned it.
BH | 12:10 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
This is exciting.

When early rumours suggested that the Brigham City temple would be on the old Central School parcel, at first I was worried that the lot was too small, and the downtown location not the best. but then I recalled that the lot once accomodated a gradeschool, so it can surely accomodate a temple.

If local accounts are accurate, the LDS church has made arrangements to build a parking lot to the south of the temple block, purchasing the IFA building, the old Lotus Cafe, and the homes to the west. Sad to see my aunt and uncles old home go, but the temple will be worth it.

Michael, it was not an A&W, but a Frostop. I don't know how many 10 cent soft serve ice cream cones I had there as a child. And if I was feeling rich, it would be a large for 16 cents, tax included.
im all for it... | 12:28 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
i think they should build more temples in utah!!! i love it!!! although i am from Sandy and have 4 temples within the sight of my house (exadurating a big because Salt Lake is blocked by the city) but still...i love going up above the draper Temple and looking out and being able to see the temples in the valley...i was talking to a friend of mine from colorado springs, CO. and was telling her that from my house there are like 50 temples within 1.2 seconds! (exaduration obviously) and she was telling me that the closest temple to her is an hour and a half away...or something like that...but this is truely a blessing for people in northern utah...especially those from Brigham! us down in salt lake, utah, and davis counties are a little bit...idk the word...but we have all these temples so close to us and have no worries about how to get there or gas or the drive...you all deserve that beautiful building right in the heart of that great city...after all it is named BRIGHAM...odd that there wasnt a temple there already...haha
Prophecy | 12:50 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Someday all will know what temples do for the livin and the dead. Someday all will see the importance of allowing all people no matter where the lived or died to have the opportunity to accept the saving ordinances that Christ talked about. Someday, all will know that temples are the Lord's house and that the work there is bigger than all of us. Someday all will know the work that is happening on the earth right now as being historic. Someday peolpe will thank the Lord for the building of temples, even those who now hate them.
Revelation Lives!! | 1:22 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
"Way to go" Brigham City!!
A town has to be pretty special to warrant a temple!!

There are many towns that still "long" to have a temple built close to them..

This is wonderful!!
Shadows | 1:57 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
The Ogden temple is build right next to the Ogden tabernacle, doesn't seem to be a problem.

We long for a temple in Maine...

I guess the Saints here had better get moving and fill the Boston Temple beyond their capacity to service us all...

Until then congrats.... to all those who will have new temples in their mist
Will Fill It | 2:45 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
I am from Brigham but now live in South Jordan. The church just built a new temple across the Bangerter temple from us. We have to make an appointment to attend because those that live within a mile of it, are truly catching the vision of why it is here. Brigham will do the same.
Prophesy question | 4:00 p.m. Oct. 29, 2009
Hey, could someone fill me in about this prophesy a lot of people are talking about that there would be a temple in Brigham City someday? I'm curious to read it. Please help me know where I can find it and who prophesied it. Thanks!
