Election 2009: Municipal races turn ugly in Herriman
26 comments | Read story
Mills seems like he has a good head on his shoulders, and appears to have the people's interests in mind. Government serves the people.
I encourage voters in Herriman to look at the record of the incumbents - what have they done in office? Has it been good? Look at the claims of the challengers - how will they make good on those claims? Are there other elements in play in these local elections? The bottom line is who is better equipped to lead Herriman into the next level of growth and into the next level of Utah cities? The answer to both those questions involves experience at and with city government. Utah has had enough of voting based on teh magic "R' behind a candidates name. Vote for the person please.
-How many city council meetings have you attended? Josh Mills admitted he hardly ever attends. Why would we want someone who runs for office and doesn't even bother to show up for meetings now?
-What would you cut? That whole Herriman contract thing made me mad! They want to cut our parks? Exactly where do they think they're getting the money? From a money tree? I LIKE OUR PARKS and I want the grass mowed!! That's why I moved here!
-How are you going to help get businesses here? Do you actually know builders and developers? Obviously if Mayor Crane can get the rec center built here, he knows the right people.
I hope people do some checking on these supposed "facts"!!!
What is it that you think makes Mayor Crane - a registered Republican - a democrat?
Is it his family values, sponsoring parks and arts?
Is it his fiscal conservatism, paying off the Butterfield Park and City Hall bond 16 & 18 years early?
Is it how he upholds personal property rights, allowing developers to build on the land they own in a responsible manner?
Maybe it's his commitment to public safety, and why he has the endorsements of both police and fire.
Just askin...
For that reason alone I am voting against Mayor Craine.
Better yet, you should VERY concerned at the method that has been implemented by the current city leadership for raising such funds, not once, but TWICE now...disguising tax increases as fees on your water bill, and implementing them without due process.
The article hints that the incumbants have been in office too long, that the Mayor possibly has too much power, and that they are looking out for their own family to the point of breaking rules. Uotside of the DUI situation all that is said about the contenders is that they want to lower taxes, undo things that the incumbants have done, etc.
I don't think that the new blood would be able to deal with Herrimans problems any better. Everything they say is just what people like to hear so they can get elected and get that $95,000 a year pay check.
I'm not saying that I think the old guard should stay, but I felt that the article was biased and slanted in favor of the challengers.
Re: Rec Center: We're already subsidizing fitness centers through ZAP funds all over the county, why not have one here? Everyone I talked to is THRILLED to be getting one here. Fitness centers and a town square concept in general can bring in revenue to cities --- what do you see near the Marv Jensen and South Jordan city halls/library complex? Within a block or two lots of restaurants, craft stores, etc. Riverton people are going to come here to use the facility (just like I drive my scouts to Marv Jensen) then stop at the stores that will be located nearby. You need a few big anchors - civic or commercial - and now they're committed other businesses will come.
