Thank You. There is a politician who understands how to lead. As a conservative Republican I would vote for you in a heart beat if I lived in Salt Lake County. I would even campaign for you.
Please tell me | 4:06 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
that you're running for Gov!
Utah County Repubs for Corroon | 4:51 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
I could've voted for Lane Beatty, but no other potential republican candidate for gov does anything for me.

Mayor Corroon, my vote is yours in 2010 if you run...
Republicans love Caroon | 5:01 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Caroon has more republican values that Huntsman.

It'll be interesting to see how other counties in the state fare with their own budgets this year. From what I hear there's no shortage of budget pain to go around.

Good luck is all I can say.

Good job! Finally a politician ( and gasp a democrat at that) who gets it!!!!!
County vs. State | 7:42 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
I want to commend the Mayor for preparing a fiscally responsible budget! Way to go. I wish I weren't faced with another property tax increase but at least he is trying to cut something too and not just raise taxes.
The only thing I don't understand is when the Legislature tries to cut the budget people scream to high heaven that some of the services they like will get cut. We always hear that education will be destroyed and all the teachers will move. Education is such a huge part of the state budget that it needs to be fiscally conservative also.
I commend all politicians who are honestly trying to be fiscally responsible--whether they are Democrat or Republican or any other party.

Thanks!

I hope Carroon runs for Governor.
The Gauntlet | 9:53 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Carroon has thrown down the gauntlet to the Repubs who would be governor, and I bet his County budget ends up with a more conservatie mix of cuts and tax increases than the repub legislature with the state budget.

I love it!
BRAVO! | 9:55 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Pretty good. Especially for a Democrat.

Could Mayor Corroon please talk to Jimmy Matheson and get him to quit wasting money in Washington?

And, while he is educating politicians, please talk to some of the "moderate" Republicans and tach them about fiscal discipline.
Real Deal | 10:10 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
The so-called conservatives around this State love to raise taxes and never give anything up. Coroon cuts the budget right and left before asking for a pretty small tax increase. I'm still mad that the Legislature made me pay for the Jordan School split, but at least this guy did his part before asking for $20. We need more people in office like him.
what? | 10:53 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Don't you know that the recession is over according to some news source?
Illegal taxation. | 4:47 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Caroon is criminally acting out of his jurisdiction violating every taxation law in our constitution.

Only our state legislators has the power to change taxes, not a county crook. This is another Red Flag or our legislators not acting as our representatives on taxation issues. Taxing must be done by representation and Caroon is not our representation. What he is doing is raising taxes without representation and its appalling he is getting away with it. The county does not have the authority or constitutional powers to adjust or regulate taxes.

By any law this is an illegal act and the people should be smart enough to boycott our counties and representatives for illegal taxation.

As I have maintained though, Utah is swamped with educated illiterates who have no idea of their constitutional rights and government duties.

No, we do not want him as governor, a man that exploits his powers and authority. Caroon and Shurtleff are from the same mold and a danger to our state.
Agree/Kudos | 7:33 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Congratulations Mr. Caroon, we all have to live within our own budgets and we often have to go without needed items in order to balance our personal budgets. It's time government did the the same. We are all experiencing the effects of the recession, we can't continue to fund everything for everyone. We can learn something from having to live within our means, in spite of hardships which might be caused.

Those of us who do live within our means, are tired of supporting those who do not.
Re: illegal taxation | 8:05 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Hey Bozo,

Can you cite the law or case law that does not permit the county to tax property? Or for that matter to tax the sale of products? I thought not.

Also, which criminal statute did he violate? Put your militia handbook away and be reasonable.
Corroon's courage | 8:17 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
As a hard-core Republican, I acknowledge that the top fiscally-responsible government official in this state is Peter Corroon. It isn't just about cutting budgets and keeping major tax hikes at bay. It is about making smart cuts and preserving core services. Corroon is so refreshingly open and creative.

Please, sir, switch parties so that you can be elected Governor. Gary Herbert's a nice guy, but he knows only slash and burn politics.

And a suggestion for walloping cuts: the DA's office. As Mayor, why do you allow this taxpayer-funded personal vendetta that Lohra Miller has against Kent Morgan? She is wasting money and wasting the focus of attorneys who should be prosecuting crimes. Can't she just get Morgan to promise to not run against her again, let him get back to quietly convicting serious criminals and be done with this silly ego game? As Mayor, sir, you should flex your executive muscle and shut her down by deeply cutting her budget. My police friends tell me that the level of services was cut by her long ago.
Thank you | 9:09 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
"Share the pain" is the slogan.
Well Done | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Astounding - providing I'm not dreaming, did I just read an article where a politician is reducing the size of government?

Well done!

Now I just wish I could post a blog everyday congratulating someone in the same way - unfortunately that is just a dream, or worse yet, a nightmare...
Good Campaign | 10:20 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
It is great to see that Mayor Corroon has his campaign team montioring the news. His courage, however, was needed months ago and a relative modest tax increase at that time, as proposed by his democratic colleagues on the County Council, would have significantly mitigated the impact of the recommended budget cuts. Likewise, when you review the proposed cuts, they remind you of the police chief who when asked to cut his budget always started with the school crossing guards. Look carefully at the proposed cuts and you will see that once again Corroon has dodged being responsible and the County Council will have to make real decisions. The stand up person, and person who really provides leadership in the County, is Joe Hatch. He has the guts to tell it like it is and then be a diplomat when the Mayor comes running back with his tail between his legs.
RE: Good Campaign | 11:18 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009
You just don't get how sick a lot of republicans (myself included) are with the entrenched power structure of our local party, with who the players are, how they operate, etc. Show me a Utah democrat who is more fiscally conservative in a common sense way than most of our republicans, and that person has my vote. Carroon is simply a good guy.

I know in the campaign people will demagogue the Democrat label. But, knowning many people on both sides of the political debate, I can say that a lot of the democrats I know are closet republicans who just got absolutely sick of the way our one party structure worked and so wanted to vote for someone else.

I didn't vote for some of our Utah County republicans who ran opposed last election just to say "maybe you're not as great as you think you are." Trust me, they need a good dose of that.

Is Carroon more conservative than Huntsman? Absolutely, and that dude made it through convention! You conservatives survived Huntsman. And by comparison, I think you'll love Carroon.
Please run for Governor | 12:08 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Utah needs you!
We need more like Carroon | 12:26 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Wow. A politician who actually lives within his means. Do you think Congress could do this? Fat chance.
spudnut | 1:32 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Wow, how can so many of you get all worked up about a guy when the majority of you don't even know how to spell his name?!
Anonymous | 2:35 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Good thing he increased the size of government and jobs for his buddies before reducing other peoples jobs.
Sham | 2:48 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Like a good politician, Mayor Corroon does not raise taxes, he raises property assessments. In a down market my property evaluation/taxes have been raised 33%. Appealing them costs 30% of the returned money, but I would rather pay my attorney than the government. Shame on you mayor for the sham. Don't run for governor!
INEFFICIENCIES AND WASTE | 2:54 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Governments should be run like this all the time!! Only when they are asked to actually manage tightly do they get serious.

Otherwise they are comfortable with letting the "10%" of clearly unecessary cost continue because it is YOUR MONEY they are spending.

When will people learn that there are very few things that govt does well. Being efficient or saving money is NEVER one of them!
I wonder  | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
I wonder if all these posts are from the same person or group of persons. Maybe Corroon has his campaign people trying to spin this tax increase in a positive way.

I appreciate as much as anyone the efforts to cut the budget rather than raise taxes. I appreciate that the tax increase isn't more. But c'mon, people actually praising a tax increase? Get real!
Good job Corroon campaign | 4:30 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
keep up the posts, but try to at least alter your syntax and sentence structure, voice etc. so it isn't so obvious that all the posts are coming from the same person!!!
Atlas | 5:22 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
Good & bad. Good to cut spending. Bad to increase homeowner taxes. Need to do better Mayor. Stick with cutting government waste and taxes.
Re: Sham | 6:23 p.m. Oct. 28, 2009
In case you hadn't noticed, the County Assessor is a Republican, Lee Gardner. If you have a problem with your assessments, get mad at him, not the Mayor.
