Wow... I'm an avid cyclist and get nervous at 35 mph on my road bike... and it has brakes!!! Hope others learn from this... people used to go over Niagra Falls in barrels as well... Whenever anyone dies in an accident it is a terrible thing; but some accidents are easily avoidable!

at least have the decency

to put a helmet on and spare the driver of the car the memory of killing you.

Think of others, if you don't want to consider yourself.

I knew Robi and his friends, and they usually wear helmets and parachutes but that day didn't have them and just wanted to go on one more hill... :( This story does him no justice as a person, just focuses on the accident. Go look up KSL's coverage of it and be sure to listen to the audio file. The driver didn't kill him, the car held his friends following behind. Robi lost control for some reason and the result was drastic. We miss him.

How about we just offer our condolences to the students family. Sorry for your loss.

Just a Mom

I have watch longboarders for many years now. I have seen them lose control and crash more times than I can count. I have call 911 when they didn't get up, I have seen cars swerve to miss them and crash and the boarders just kept on going. I saw a motorcycle and a longboarder smash into each other, the guy on the motorcycle had on a helmet and got right up, the longboarder didn't. The motorcycle was a total wreck, the longboard continued down the hill, no problems. I even watch a naked longboarder...so did my 8 year old daughter, he had awakened her yelling out to his buddies. I'm just glad that it wasn't on my hill, and that I didn't have to witness this awful death. Be smart, if you continue to break the law at least be safe about it and wear the proper gear! So sorry for you loss, and even more sad that it could have been prevented.

First, as a professional longboarder, I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the victim.

Id also like to point out that not all longboarders skate without gear. any seasoned rider is capable of controlling his or her board at any speed (i can stop quicker on my board than i can in my truck), and many sports are more dangerous than skateboarding. football claims many young lives, so does cycling. please also note that no cities offer facilities for this sport, while nearly every other athlete, pro and amateur has places to safely practice.

Longboarding is pretty safe if you know what you are doing. As eddie said, an expereinced boarder can stop very quickly. I can stop faster on my board than on my bike, with just as much ease.

The problem is that unexperienced riders are riding down hills and they don't know how to stop.

Wear your helmet, and never forget your sliding gloves.

Read KSL's coverage of this young man. He was a phenomenal person and an experienced rider. Thursday he made a mistake and it cost him and his family dearly. This article does him no justice, which is unfortunate.

Same Old Story

The stories and comments parrot the same hackneyed line, "but he was a good guy." It's just like the stories you hear about missionaries or Mormons or Utans... "but he was a good guy/missionary/member."

I can't stand longboarders. I don't believe the kid was evil, just foolish. Hard to imagine, though, that someone who takes that kind of risk on a whim or a dare has all the rest of their life in order and is just a "phenomenal person."

i really like same old story

Hmm no none of us longboarders are professionals who make very good livings, support our families, ... We all just smoke dope all day long on your tax dollars. Thats right on your dollar. Everything in this world is risky or as you would say foolish. Driving, getting out of bed... Your a silly man or women. Anyways my condolences to the family friends. Anyone know what type of board he was riding. Also when people say 35 they are usually doing 25-30.
