I liked the original series from the 70s better. The current one is too dark.

You are in the very small minority

I'm in the very small minority, too, then. Doesn't bother me a bit.

The problem with the modern version of this show is that it represents everything that is wrong with the modern entertainment industry: gratuitous nudity, indiscriminate sex, and violence committed simply for the sake of violence. Indeed, the difference between the two versions of the show is striking. Whereas the original version promoted positive values such as honesty, loyalty, and respect for others, the modern version promotes dishonesty, greed, and every type of immorality. With modern Hollywood's relentless promotion of these evils, it is no wonder that modern society is such a mess.

Yes the new Battlestar Glactica promotes "dishonesty, greed, and every type of immorality" the same way Hansel and Gretel promoted eating children, and Snow White promoted cutting out their hearts or poisoning them.

If you are going to make a point Sigh, at least do it right. In the tales that you cited, the evil baddies were doing the eating, cutting and poisoning, and the activities were in no way sanctioned. In BG, the heroes (and anti-heroes) are the ones involved in the questionable activities which are indeed portrayed as being perfectly acceptable.

I guess you are right, I missed the mark with my point. I shouldn't have been glib and expected anyone making this particular complaint to get the real point.

Here it is:
Gone are the stories of infallible heroes. Story tellers typically now write characters who reflect the true complexity of human nature (which BTW is the *entire* point of the new BSG) and leave it up to the viewer/reader to decide the acceptable aspects from those that aren't.

John Charity Spring: It's not as if nudity, indiscriminate sex, and violence committed simply for the sake of violence never happen in real life. That's part of the reason television is kind of at a peak right now (IMHO). As Sigh said, "Gone are the stories of infallible heroes." I wouldn't say that this show was "promoting" any of those activities. It simply shows them for what they are.

John, you sound like a broken record. My wife and I have fun counting how many times you repeat similar phrases in all of your comments. We get your point already. Modern society is wicked and evil. It's a good thing we have naysayers such as yourself to keep us all in check. The world is better because of your biased negativity. With such thoughtless, mind-numbing repetitiveness, it's no wonder these comment boards are such a mess!

Look at great literary characters - Jean Valjean, for example. A criminal that stole, contemplated murder, false witness, illegal immigration, kidnapping, stole an identity, and more. Yet Les Miserables can teach a reader a lot about compassion, repentance, paternal love, and more divine qualities.

Stories about human beings with hungry stomachs and lots of nerve endings (paraphrasing C.S Lewis) that endeavor to find meaning and peace are important.

While some may not like the tone or semi-graphic nature of BSG, there isn't a moment of gratuitous material in it. Every scene added to the plot or character development.

BTW, the 70's series represents a very sweet part of my childhood. But, I can't handle watching it now. The script, acting, and production values are terrible (but were great to a 10 year old).

No Brigham Young quotes in the new series. But the premise of the divine nature of man and his struggles is still there.
