DURING BAD TIME AROUND AMERICA RIGHT NOW DUE OUR COUNTRY PROBLEMS AND BEGINNING CRISIS.
SHOULD OUR CHURCH RE ESTABLISH "MORMON BATTALION II" FOR JUST FEW WESTERN STATES SURROUND UTAH FOR PROTECTION STAND BY ?.
I JUST WONDERING .

Re: Robert Sr

No. But thanks for asking.

Robert... the Mormon Church has some really bad PR... I don't think building up their very own army will help public perception....

Thanks for the story.

We don't honor these great people (men and women) nearly enough. What they accomplished, the trials they endured, should be an inspiration to all and should be remembered and honored on a regular basis.

Robert what do you mean by, "Bad time around America"??? You act like our country is doomed... such a pessimist. I don’t think America is in such a way that everybody should have their own Battalion... Obama is turning things around.

Pagan

The LDS church has been trying to play 'the victim' card recently.

Two words:

Mormon Battalion

Oh yes, a militant religion is so very under assault.

Pesky native americans.

My 3rd great-grandfather was in the Mormon Battalion and wrote in his journal of horrific conditions and much suffering. He was a new convert and just 21 years of age. He helped build the Nauvoo Temple before he left. I am very proud of him and can hardly wait to meet him.

And "Thanks for the Story" thank you... for your kind words.

Obama is NOT turning things around. HE IS THE PROBLEM.

Catherine

Yes, honor these great men who sought out the way and safety for other Latter Day Saints. I understand that the Mormon Battalion were the original and first Latter Day Saint Mormons to enter the Salt Lake valley. I often wondered why their names are not on a plaque next to the first 100 pioneers who entered the heritage park.

RE: Silverfox

"Horrific codition", During WW11 my uncle served as a guard in a Nazi prison camp, his brother my father left Germany and came to america and was with General McArthur when they returned to the Phillipines,I'm not proud of my uncle.

I'm surprised the author didn't mention a third major monument to the Battalion, located on the site of the old Tucson AZ Presidio. Dedicated by Gordon B. Hinckley in 1996, it features three super-sized bronze figures celebrating the raising of the Stars and Stripes over Tucson in December 1846.

My mother's great-great grandfather Ebenezer Brown was Second Sergent of Company A. His wife, Phebe, was one of four women to accompany the Battalion all the way to California. In 1847, they re-enlisted with the Mormon Volunteers and spent the following nine months stabilizing the political and military situation around San Diego, where they were an early version of the Peace Corps.

Ebenezer Brown went on to lead a major group of Battalion veterans and ship Brooklyn pioneers across the Sierra and to the Salt Lake valley in 1848. A statue of Ebenezer and Phebe Brown stands today at the Draper, Utah, historical park on 9th East, established on the site of their original homestead. They were the first to settle Draper.

We can't do too much to honor such pioneers.

' I understand that the Mormon Battalion were the original and first Latter Day Saint Mormons to enter the Salt Lake valley.'

So, native americans never set foot there?

That is foolish.

You know when people say that a military was 'tamming' the wilds of the West, they meant the Ute tribe was being put on reservations, right?

Both my great-great-grandMOTHER and her son, my great-grandfather were part of the Mormon Battalion, and traveled every mile of the trek. She was a cook and laundress, he, at 16, was an aide to the Company A commander. I am proud of what they helped do. Thank you so much for your story. It is all too easy to ignore those who give much for their COUNTRY (not just their religion), yet, because they are not celebrated "personalities" go unrecognized. Once again, thank you.

RE PEGAN
Catherine was merely talking about the LDS Mormon Battalion as being the very "FIRST MORMON" pioneers of SLC,Utah, which has nothing to do with the Indians who were everywhere in the USA before the white man, so quit reading between the lines and picking a fight. Peace to you, man.

RE: Pagan

The Mormon Battalion was commissioned by the US government, not formed by the church. The US government had the gall to ask the Mormons to help protect the country which wouldn't protect the Mormons' rights for religious freedom. The Mormons had the decency and love of country to oblige, even requiring many men to leave their families to cross the plains on their own. They even protected your right to spout your negative opinion. Be grateful.

Stewart

Pagan, were the Native Americans Mormons? Read your own quote from Catherine.

By the way the Mormon Battalion members from the D Company that were sent to winter in Pueblo arrived several days after the Pioneer Company led by Brigham Young. This group was made up of sick battalion members sent from Santa Fe because they were too sick to move on due to Dr. Sanderson's treatment. Their movement and stay at Pueblo was also very difficult. I know because I have the biographies of two of my great grandfathers who were members of D Company.

From some of the comments it seems that there a number of trolls that go through the DN looking for anything that they can use as criticism against the LDS Church. They must lead a miserable life surrounded by Mormons.

Don

Wow, I am also surprised there is not a monument at "Heritage Park" for the Mormon Battalion meaning they were the first Mormon pioneers into the valley as others have said, rather they were soldiers or not. They were in Utah before Brigham Young.

Dave

I am very grateful to the Mormon Battalion. Those men were true hero's for the LDS church.

I don't see too many trolls on here, only one Pagan troll, so lets all keep our composer and not start a fist fight here. Have great day every body.

Pagan

Stewart, Native Americans were in Utah before mormons, christopher columbus and the vikings.

All this talk of the 'first mormons' dosen't change that.

Want to pay homage, do something about the reservations they live on now.

Want to be proud of your history? Get it right.

HistoryBuff

Before making negative comments about the Mormon Battalion, please find out who they were. They didn't go to Utah. Their march and mission was for the US government in the Mexican-American war. They were on their way to Utah when they were asked to leave their families on the trail. They headed South and eventually made their way to San Diego. They didn't get to Utah until they were disbanded and made their way back to their families.

RON

Hey, PAGAN, What's your problem man? The earth belongs to all Gods children not just one group of people. I never heard God say anything that it just belonged to ONE certain group of people. Besides no one was talking about the Native Americans, because we all know and realize that native Americans resided in these parts first. We are simply discussing here that the Mormon Battalion arrived before Brigham young and some his followers. Please calm down and try to be nice.
