What a laugh! Get them out of here Checketts! How you ever sold this community on this bunch and this game is the biggest farce of the century.
Good work RSL | 10:12 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
A great team, that has made a ton of mistakes this season. Time to prove that you are a playoff team.

Let the nay sayers whine all they want.
Same Ole Same Ole | 7:09 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
New hopes every season, change of coaches, change of players and what do you have---just another pro team with primma-donna players that care only about themselves. Move them Checketts, get Rush's money and expertise and let him tell you where he wants them to be. I guess the white elephant you built here on the taxpayers can be used for high school sports and other outdoor functions! Goodbye.

Ho Ho boy is still out there, still can't make a cleaver argument against soccer but he keeps trying!!
I can't wait to see RSL score at least 2 Saturday to put some pressure on Columbus the next week.
Sold out Stadium should also get some great "original" comments from Ho Ho.
Nussdorfer AC  | 8:54 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I will see you all at the game. Go RSL!
RE: same ole | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Yep same ole misinformation. How much exactly did you pay as a taxpayer for the stadium? Thats right nothing, unless you stayed at a hotel which means you maybe paid $1 per night. Get over it and go read the funny papers.
moose on the loose | 9:18 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
And where would all that hotel tax be going if it wasn't paying for the mexicans soccer team?

Dont tell us it didnt cost us anything. We all know that no matter where you take tax dollars from, its still tax dollars. Larry miller never took one dollar of tax money to build the delta center.

Soccer is a boring sport for the drunkards, period.

re: same ole
Have you ever met any of the RSL players? There is no way you can call them "just another pro team with primma-donna players that care only about themselves". I have met all but Will Johnson and they have all seemed really happy to get to talk to the fans. Russell is probably the nicest guy I have ever met. All have been really laid back and down to earth. This isn't the Jazz dude. Maybe if you ever actually come to a game you can met a player and find out soccer is different from most sports. Until then get a friggin clue
re:moose on juice | 9:38 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
ok where would it go then? and recheck how lhm paid for delta center
RE Moose | 9:59 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I wouldn't have ever taken you for a racist, but wow.
Actually Larry did get tax money for the Delta center and continues to only pay $1 rent on Spring Mobil park thanks to tax payers.
The Hotel tax money goes to recreation centers

RSL Rules!!! Soccer is catching on in America get used to it.
todd from santa ana | 10:05 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
so it cost a few bucks what does not in life wow?!!!

You get a local team that gives back and cares about its community and has a great stadium

so badd
Re; moose on the loose | 10:14 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Get your facts straight. Adjusted for inflation, Larry Miller's abomination actually got MORE taxpayer funding than RSL's stadium.

Plus, RSL is paying theirs back at over $400,000 per year. Larry Miller is paying his back at $3 per year. No, that's not a typo - $3 PER YEAR.

Again, get your facts straight.
Go RSL.... | 10:15 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
The title of the article is: Playoff Bound RSL ! Stay on topic.

Good luck to the team as they go forward into post season competition.

Go RSL.....................
Anonymous | 10:26 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
RSL made it, I can't believe it. This is awesome, two years ina row. RSL scored the second most goals in the league, they are about average for number of goals they gave up, they have the best home record in the league, if they could just learn to be more competetive on the road...I think RSL has a legitimate chance. They fought hard tog et the results they needed down the stretch. Now they need to raise the intensity. GO RSL!
Motherwell FC | 11:25 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I grew up as a football, baseball, basketball guy but can no longer stand to watch those sports, except for the World Series. Soccer is by far the most entertaining spectator sport.
Chadders | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I used to love the NBA but now it is so watered down and the players are so spoiled it is hard to care. I have heard the stories from really fanatic soccer fans about the #s of kids playing/watching soccer and thought they might be exaggerating. I was wrong. I was at the RioT on Friday helping them sell tickets to the high school girls soccer and it was crazy. More people were buying tickets than for high school football championship. If you saw the #s from the summer of soccer, it is clear there is a market for top-notch soccer.
RSL and the other teams in MLS are a big part of this ever growing sport. We are lucky and deserving of the playoffs. I believe we have a great chance to win the Cup. People may think I'm crazy but there will be a day when more people care about RSL than the Jazz.
H YEAH | 12:18 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I can't wait to see that stadium totally packed with people going nuts for their team. I am still partially deaf from all the drums on saturday. Hopefully they will play like they did on saturday against Colorado.
Wow | 12:43 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
RSL represents and makes the playoffs giving us a chance to have a pro title in this town, so I guess its' time to move the team and tear down that tax payer black hole of a stadium.

Are you scared that RSL fans might be able to say that their team has a title and yours doesn't? I don't get the fear. It is just another sport. I think several sports are boring, some of them exciting, but I don't pass my time blogging hate mail to them.

"Jazz just squeeked into the playoffs this year, I guess we better ship them off to New Orleans where they belong and turn their arena into a high school state tournament venue. Good thing we shipped off that boring basketball team! Everyone hated you anyway, I can't believe Larry ever pulled the wool over everyones eyes on this one."
Normal Sports Guy.... | 1:39 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Saturday my wife stumbled on the RSL vs Colorado soccer game on TV. She asked me to watch it with her for awhile. I enjoyed the game, thought it was fast & athletic, tried to understand the attaching strategies and was cheering when the tall/fast guy kicked in a goal that looked like something most athletes could not even imagine accomplishing. I plan to watch more games.
re: wow | 1:52 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I don't think Jazz fans are worried that RSL will win a title before the Jazz do. There's a big difference; the NBA is recognized as the top professional basketball league in the world while MLS would be a third or fourth tier league in Europe or South American. Winning an MLS title wouldn't be close to taking an NBA title, so there is no comparison.
todd from santa ana | 2:50 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I am tired and so are most of us the back and forth. Enjoy everything for what it is and your choices to prioritize, soccer is as good as it gets. Chadders agreed, I loved and miss Arena Football too, I miss true warriors paid little for the love of the game, and brilliant mind coaches who strategize game plans, works to develop players better players and better humans

Such as Danny White and the Utah Blaze.

We all like what we like

Go both teams

Instead of this garbage it would be nice if this state got behind REAL SALT LAKE
Wow | 2:54 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
To the rest of the world an NBA title is about the same thing as an MLS title, you just grew up in America where the NBA is big and soccer hasn't been.

Basketball has done pretty well oversees, but to the rest of the world Basketball is like soccer is here, a foreigner sport that will never be as big as soccer.

Would it bother you if RSL got a title before the Jazz? because it seems that there is a lot of anti-soccer attitude out there and I wonder where it comes from. I guess its mostly because people see it as an imported sport. We can't attach the words Mom and Apple pie to it. I kind of thought that Americans would get into it because our American pride would say "We beat the world at everything and we will beat you at your sport as well." Instead, there seems to be more of a "Get out of our country and stay out!" mentallity.
Johnny | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
"MLS would be a third or fourth tier league in Europe or South American"

Sweeping statement of dismissal. Until club teams play competitive matches there is no way of proving it.

If Columbus wins the Concacaf Champions League (they won't because Toluca are the best team in the competition) they will play against the Uefa Champions league champion in the Club World Cup against the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea and they will be competing on merit.

Soccer is the only sport which recognises performance based on merit, rather than just stats.
re: wow | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Most fans don't care about what's big in the rest of the sports world. Its about what's important here: NFL, College Football, NBA, College basketball and MLB. The MLS can have its own niche, like the NHL, PGA and tennis, but don't force us to like it. It seems that the prevailing attitude is that if you don't like soccer, you're an uneducation and unworldly buffoon. I know a lot of kids here play the game, but I've been told since the 60s, it was the next big thing and it is in a few locales around the country, but just a few.
Spaz | 5:59 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Wow you guys have a lot of losers here today. Is the IQ always this low?

I love this team Jason Kreis put together. I wondered if he'd teach his team how to shoot from 30 yds out like he did ha ha. But what he did was give his team his heart and never quit attitude. I think the moments of brilliance we saw with Musisyan last year in the play-offs are the real RSL. A taste of what's to come. Last year it was the first time you ever saw Jason Kries smile when RSL made the playoffs. This year it's not good enough to just be in it. This year the bar is higher: RSL will be expected to win some playoff games and make more claret and cobalt noise than ever before in an MLS playoffs. Go RSL!
re re wow | 6:15 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Who said anyone else is forcing you to like it??? If you dont just stay away. It's not rocket science.

Yes rsl should probably be extremely disapointed about the way this season turned out. Many at the beginning of season picked us as western conference favorites. I am disapointed
Rob | 6:39 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Say what you will it does not make a difference to me.. I have been an RSL fan since day one. Sure it's not as big as the jazz or the U and the Y sports.. Who really cares though? I love soccer, basketball, and football, most americans love basketball, football, and baseball. It makes no difference to me if soccer is a minority or a majority sport in this country as long as i can still play the beautiful game! This is the general attitude of most soccer players. If people think they can be so anti soccer that it will just disappear and go away their kidding themselves.. There are already more soccer players in this country than baseball, hockey, and football. Trust me the future is secure!

I dont understand why RSL needs to have their backs against the wall to show how talented they really are.. IF we manage to make it to the mls cup i hope next year we can take the supporters shield. It's not going to happen if JK continues to let his team be satisfied with just squeeking by.
keep it coming | 6:48 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
They just cant seem to figure it out.. The more people post and click on rsl articles the more we get..

I enjoy hearing people dis soccer because the fact is most people don't even have the coordination to play it.

17,000 plus fans a game. Yeah that's a real farce!

Interesting | 6:59 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
A few years back it was a for sure thing. RSL would fail, now way does utah have the demographics for soccer to succeed. It's just not what utah is all about!

Today, It's a complete mystery how this team is doing so well. It has got to be a conspiracy. Yes that's it its a complete farce! They have shipped in thousands of euro snobs to go to every game! ITS A CONSPIRACY I TELL YOU!

Haters face the facts, rsl is doing great. Attendance is up from last year, we made the playoffs for the second consecutive year. It's time to eat a slice of humble pie and admit you were wrong. It's not a conspiracy, soccer is a great sport loved by thousands in the Salt Lake valley.

Here comes the argument that it's not as big as byu or utah football. Who said it had to be?

RSL great game on saturday and i will see you all on halloween!

re; Rob | 9:11 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
That's because its the only game easy enough for the six and under group to play and pad those alleged figures.
Rob | 9:59 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
@ re; Rob | 9:11 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Play on high school soccer teams soared 88% between 1990-91 and 2003-04, while registration on U.S. Youth Soccer Association teams climbed at an almost identical rate to nearly 3.2 million players in
2002-03.

I googled to see if i could find how many American football players there are in the world and the lowest i found was 250,000. The highest was 3 million.

That's more people playing soccer in this country over the age of 12 than play football in total in the united states.

Maybe you should get the facts before you talk smack...
If you can't get it. . . | 6:56 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Ask basketball players about soccer. Go google what Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett have to say about the sport. You'll be surprised.
I think | 8:31 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009
if you are a professional athlete you understand and appreciate another professional athlete regardless of the sport. That is why Kobe feels a bond between him and Messi. They are both amazing athletes earning gobs of money to entertain the masses. They just play a different sport.

We could all take a lesson from that.
Spaz | 8:32 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009
Yes, Google Steve Nash as suggested. Also, here are a few more soccer facts to check out:

Soccer is the world's most popular sport, and the most popular sport in the U.S. among kids under age 13. Moreover, in the U.S., more people watched the '06 World Cup on tv than the MLB World Series that year. The 1994 World Cup held in the U.S. remains to this day the most attended sporting event in the history of the world.

Watching Team Sports | 9:08 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009
American Football is the most fun for me to watch. A lot of strategy and variation in every play, with clear goals to reach on every down. Plenty of pauses in action though.

Basketball is 2nd most fun to watch for me. Continuous action with a little less variation, but enough to be entertaining, focusing fans on every possession back and forth.

Soccer is the third (to watch), if you understand the strategy offsetting skill levels of players involved on the field. The gameplay is constant, but unless you are playing in the game, you don't feel the intensity of owning possession, and moving your team into position, like a chess match without pauses. These possessions are more vital than the previous two sports because every score takes more effort. It is as much fun to play as any sport out there, if you're athletic.

Baseball is fourth. 2nd most fun to play. Most strategy, most intense on an individual, but least continuous play by everyone at once.

Volleyball is like basketball only too monotonous. Bump, set, spike is only enthralling for so long. Then you just want game, set, match to be over. Fun to play.
aging-gkeeper | 1:41 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
If you compare the 2008 and 2009 season stats it doesn't seem like much progress, but also doesn't seem as dismal as this article and the other seem to imply.

RSL had 40 points this year and last year. They actually had one more win this year. If they had finished 10-10-10 like last year, they would have missed the playoffs. In 2008, they had a +1 GD (40 for, 39 against). In 2009, they had a +8 GD (43, 35).

Road: 2-11-2 (9 GF, 24 GA), 2-9-4 (16-29)

bottom line, if they had 8 more points they would have been tops in the west, 9 for the whole leeague. That is only 3 matches.
Forcing you to watch? | 2:06 p.m. Oct. 27, 2009
"dont force me to watch soccer"
Uh, ok... you do realize you just commented on a soccer story that had nothing to do with anybody "forcing" you to watch it.

Get a life man, have an open mind. You dont like soccer? I dont care. How about this, stop "forcing me" to listen to you rant on about something you are completely uneducated about. I dont like NASCAR or Baseball, but I dont go rant on the stories ahout how dumb it is. No, what do i do... gasp, I keep it to myself!!!

Oh man! It's going to a good one this Saturday! Way to go RSL! It's incredible to have such a great team and organization in the playoffs again. This state is behind you!!! Bring the cup home!
