BYU football: Shell-shocked Cougs pondering next move

Ever since the football program at Ricks was dropped, BYU has been using Timpview high as a feeder school to get their players.

But from the results of yesterday's humiliating loss, things need to change in Provo...

BYU needs to learn to pass better, catch better, and run faster.

I like this story. One of the most important lessons in sports is the ability to get back in the saddle when you fall out. It's a critical lesson because it's something we face every day as human beings. Things go wrong. But you can't let those things keep you down. You've got to get back up, dust yourself off, and keep going.

I appreciate Bronco Mendenhall's efforts to instill this mindset in his players. Bronco is right. Every game is not do or die, and you can't define yourself by your losses. The Cougs still have a lot to gun for, like winning the rest of their games and hoping that TCU lands in a BCS bowl so that they can return to the Las Vegas bowl. There is such a thing as losing the right way, and BYU is doing that. Go Cougars!!!

Wondering... | 9:26 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
The question is....how do you "teach" a team to practice with their pads on?
MONSTRO | 9:40 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
BYU CANT WIN WITH MOSTLY UTAH PLAYERS! NOT GOOD ENOUGH. 10 SETS OF BROTHERS ON THE TEAM? NEPOTISM AND "LEGACY PLAYERS" WILL KILL THE Y.BRANCH OUT. THE OL IS TERRIBLE IN PASS PROTECTION AND THE SECONDARY IS UNATHLETIC AND SLOW. EVERY TEAM KNOWS IT. MORE CALIF, OREGON, WASHINGTON, ARIZONA , TEXAS PLAYERS. IT WON'T GET DONE WITH MOST OF THE UTAH BOYS. RECRUIT ON MERIT, NOT FAMILY NAME
Anonymous | 10:00 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Broco's terrific. But he's got to move beyond the idea that special games don't require special preparation. You can't prepare for TCU in the same way you prepare for UNLV -- at least not if you'd like to win.

Our players are terrific. But a few of them had better step up and take over leadership responsibilities for the team.

10 - 2 is a terrific record. But it's one thing to go 10 - 2 having lost a couple of hard fought games and quite another to go 10 - 2 having been thoroughly humiliated in those two loses. A few years ago, Bronco's teams fought until the final whistle. That doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

BYU fans will be absent from USU and UofU message boards, very nice. It's not so much that I relish BYU losses it is more that whenever BYU wins there fans find it necessary to make disparraging remarks on our (USU) boards and I see the same thing on UofU boards. Strangely enough UofU fans don't make near the low blow remarks that BYU fans do nor do they gloat as much when they beat us.

It speaks volumes about the fan base.

As to the TCU game BYU again did more than just lost, they showed a complete lack of competitiveness which has become a trademark of BYU over the last few Crowton/Mendenhall years.

I am truly a for the state guy meaning I always cheer for Utes/Cougars unless they are playing us. And naturally I follow quite a bit of their action as USU leaves a bit to be desired, too bad BYU made such a poor showing.

Re: MONSTRO | 10:16 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Perhaps I can educate you a little on BYU recruiting. BYU recruits a lot of the same players that the "superior" Utah program wants, particularly in state players. BYU heavily recruits good players, mostly from Timpview and Bingham High School (some of which are really good players in the 2010 class,) but only about 50% of them are from Utah. BYU recruits the next most from California, 30% of BYU players are Californians. BYU also recruits the next most from Arizona, Nevada, and then the west coast, and Texas. All the places you mentioned are places BYU recruits. Recently there have been recruits sprinkled around from the south, (Florida, Georgia, Alabama), and the east coast and midwest. So yes, half of BYU's players are from Utah, but there is more and more talent coming from in state. There are more and more Division 1 schools looking to recruit in Utah.
FIRE BRONCO! | 10:27 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Fire bronco now! He has proven he can't get the job done. All we want is a bcs game, and bronco can't do it. FIRE BRONCO!
Howie | 10:31 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
BYU has no DB speed--it kills them everytime when they can't outscheme an opponent. Bronco needs to figure out that this isn't the early 1980s where BYU's offense was a decade ahead of everyone they played.
The correct answer is... | 10:45 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
that, with a bye week, there is no chance for BYU to lose. Thank heaven for small miracles.
AZ Dave | 10:47 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Told you Can't win the big ones.
Cougar | 10:57 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
First of all, quit worrying about the BCS. I hear people beat it up and then just love it when we're in. We all know it's flawed so quit worrying about it. What we need to do as mentioned in another post is just go out and win games and when we lose ones don't let them be blowouts. What needs to change is putting together better schemes and recruiting speed for our defensive backfield. I think it is TCU that recruits speedy receivers and teaches them to be DBs. BYU should do the same thing and quit just recruiting DBs. Get creative and think outside the box BYU. And for those calling for Bronco's job, get real, he's doing a fantastic job.
Re: Small blessings | 11:01 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
"Strangely enough UofU fans don't make near the low blow remarks that BYU fans do nor do they gloat as much when they beat us.

It speaks volumes about the fan base."

Give me a break. It's obvious you don't root for BYU at all because that is completely false. Utah fans gloat just as much. And frankly, ALL the UT schools gloat! Don't try and paint BYU fans as the worst.
Re: Re: MONSTRO  | 11:09 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Don't even try to say that Utah high school football is all that and that D1 colleges are lining up to recruit here.

Think back to when Bingham HS played Trinity HS in Dallas. Bingham got rocked!

That's the same difference between TCU and BYU.
DHS Alum | 11:13 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
I agree with "Cougar". BYU recruits good football players and every year they are solid, but that wont get them into a bcs bowl. Its definitely good enough for 9-10 wins a year and thats good but not the best. They need speed and athleticism. BYU has basically every decent recruit from the state of utah in 09-10 which means the same thing will happen 3-4 years from now. Florida and USC get great players with athleticism and teams like utah get athleticism and sometimes get great players out of it but when it doesnt work they win 6,7,8 games. So which is better, 9 wins a year or 12 wins and bcs bowl every 5 years with mediocrity in between? Its hard to say....
Re re re monstro | 11:23 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
What you just said was THE dumbest thing I have heard. Athletes in Texas are no better than Utah athletes. I'm so sick of the Texas players are better than everyone players. The only difference is Texas has more athletes not better ones if Utah had the same population as Texas or Cali it would be no different.
Re:Small blessings | 11:23 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
"it [spoke] volumes" as well when I briefly read all the anti byu comments on a different article last night. Utes are just as bad if not worse. It was only a couple of years ago when your utes demolished ucla at home and then got spanked @ unlv. You know what it's like--it bites.
mhelal | 11:23 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
For the first time I was rooting for BYU to win as a Utes fan. By the end of the game, I realized that they don't even deserve to root for them.

Max Hall can't play under pressure, he lacks leadership and that's obvious, even though he is talented but he can't step it up when it matter.
Anonymous | 11:28 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Not a good sign that the players are already willing to admit that the loss to TCU caused a funk for the rest of last season, and worse that they are even considering it may cause a funk again.

Bronco needs to crawl into their little heads and make them forget and move on.

Just cuz your National Title, BCS, and Conference Champ dreams/quests are history should not cause swoon for the rest of the season.

Come on, man up and hit someone in the mouth. Football is for hitting, not for questing and trying hard. Football is not fair. You can practice hard. You can have the best week of practice in the history of BYU, but if you (the team) are not ready to go out and hit someone and push them around, then you are GOING TO LOSE!!!

Forget needing to recruit more speed. All the speed in the world will not help if you are not willing/able to man up and play smash-mouth football. Gimmicks and trickery will only get you so far. Memo to Cougars, the passing game was novel when LaVell introduced it, not so much now.
Lone Ranger | 12:03 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I am a BYU fan and also a Mendenhall fan, and after the one yard goal line stand against Oklahoma I thought the defense is what we all had hoped for. But Florida State proved that thought wrong, and after playing another real team BYU showed its true colors. I hope the coaches learned a good football lesson both in defense and in offense from TCU, and not only that but to recruit real athletes!
I think Mendenhall has done all he can, and now it is time to get someone who can recruit, coach, and play in the next level
Right now I have lost interest in BYU's performance - giving up too many points against meager opponents, and throwing too many interceptions.
What a difference! | 12:04 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Just watched both Whittingham and Bronco on their respective Sunday night coaches shows. I like Bronco, but he has got to let loose. His methodical, corporate, robot-like demeanor is killing his program. Football is a game of emotion and it is time he shows some and allows and encourages his team to show some. You steal game momentum with big plays and the emotion that comes from a big play. Sorry, but BYU football is stale, and it starts at the top. I know the religion promotes conservative values, but this is football. You can have fun and be emotional and still be a good person and have good values.

If you removed the school names and objectively listened to the coaches, 9 out 10 players would choose Whit over Mendenhall. Bronco, let loose!! I know you can because I have seen it before you were the big man!

Heck, TCU's coach was so spent and hoarse at half-time, he couldn't even talk!

It's football, not church!
TCU tackling dummy | 12:51 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Give credit to TCU who appears to be in the right position to get a good bowl. I guess BYU should invest in a TCU football tackling dummy for their weight room (might as well use some of the money that comes from TCU's BCS bowl for that).
THEeyepatch | 2:11 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
WOW!!!!! What a beating the Cougs took, call the ambulance. To think that "people" were talking about a National Championship after beating Oklahoma to start the season. I predicted that TCU would win the game 36-30, was I wrong. I thought BYU would be in the fight of their lives. As it turned out, BYU played like a worm fighting an eagle.
BY . . . .U | 2:31 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Soooo disappointed with the game. If speed kills....well are you just gonna watch it go BY U. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the BYU coaches know how to coach against speedy teams, gotta change the old thought process people, use there speed to your benefit, not the same game plan, something different, what a thought. BYU was outcoached in my mind, just outcoached. For gosh sakes, could you think out of the box a bit.
Play calling....... | 2:54 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
was horrible against FSU & TCU. Maybe a change needs to happen there. Also, when will they address their RUDY DB problem? Utah's DB's are tons better!
Eugene | 4:17 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
As a true blue Cougar fan, I must agree that I'm tired of the excuse "we didn't execute to the highest level". Where is the emotion? Where is the heart? The difference of the great BYU teams of the past to now is the ability to play beyond your abilities with sheer grit and adrenaline.

Bronco is a great coach and in no way is his job in jeopardy, but the team needs a jump start in emotion. Excepting the Oklahoma game, the Y rolls over and dies when faced with adversity and that can only be attributed to heart. TCU wasn't bigger, stronger and faster, they just wanted it more and allowed their emotion and adrenaline to take over the game!

I'm a season ticket holder and drive from Idaho for the home games. I flew to Texas for the OK game. The losses to Florida State and TCU were embarrassing not because the Cougs lost, but because they didn't show up to play with any heart. It's tough to cheer for a team that has given up before the opening kick-off.
Re: Fire Bronco... | 4:20 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Yeah right! And who are you going to get to replace him. The best man is already at Utah. But the facts regarding him being fired say otherwise. If his stats were used to judge him including wins and losses, he should be asking for a raise. According to results, he is much better at what he does that the vast majority of us who so blatantly critize him. Get over being beat by a better team. Happens to the best of them. Coach M. would readily admit that as would all other coaches in the country. Time to move on, forget the loss, and concentrate on Wyoming. Forget about firing anyone and get control of your emotions. It's just a game, for petes sake!
Eugene | 4:28 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
While I was totally disappointed in the outcome of the game, I was even more aghast by 3 select Cougar fans found sitting within earshot around me. The single word profanities shouted by so-called Cougar fans toward their own team did not represent the Cougar fans that I know and love. You do a disservice to your school and what it stands for.

You know who you are! Football is a game, but one's integrity is for keeps. Curb your tongues and silence the swear words since the many children heard your raucaus rants. And as an adult, I'd rather not hear it either.

BYU should be one place where its fan base can rise above it whether we lose or not!
Bob in line | 5:11 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
BYU needs a 'go for the throat' attitude when it comes to fighting the game. Instead, it is a corporate zest for life type thing.

That aside, we should accept that BYU is not a perennial football powerhouse. We have a great football team that almost every year will make some national noise but somewhere we developed the idea that the BCS is hosing us by denying us our yearly national championship game. It is not. We are not.

We need to temper our expectations with a sprinkling of reality. BYU is a great team. We are not Florida. That means that every year we are going to win a couple of great games, lose one or two heartbreakers, have a couple of scares against pathetic teams, and end up playing some bowl game somewhere. This is BYU football.

And until we develop a 'go for the throat' attitude we are not likely going to have a 'Utah in the Sugar Bowl' moment.

We still stand to have a great season. We should be able to win our remaining four games, with Utah being a real exciting one. Finish in the top-25 and play a bowl game.
BYU going into Laramie | 5:35 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
For some reason, I have a bad feeling about this game. Pokes are starting to gel and after that Wyoming vs Air Force game, I came away thinking BYU had better look out for this team. Laramie of all places is a hard place to play, even with 30,000 screaming Cowboy fans!!!!
Good the enemy of Great | 5:40 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
It is not now, never has been and never will be apples to apples to recruit to the BYU Football program, yet BYU is at the top of their conference most years. Most athletes do not want to play under the lifestyle and behavioral restrictions of the BYU Honor Code. As the Church footprint has grown the effective talent pool has increased.

But that said, BYU could use a few "wrinkle" plays, a few surprises, a few "clutch" effort plans that go against the routine. BYU is among the top teams in America, still ranked in the top 30 nationwide in every poll out there. Most teams can only hope to ever be as good. But to be great, BYU will have to figure ways to beat some teams that have faster, taller players, and that comes from surprise, not from smashmouth football. When you play a better team and expect to win, you outsmart them. We need to do that.

Sure we are disappointed, but even us fans we need to come back, lift our heads, and be ready to cheer the boys on again. If you are fully invested, you try again, intelligently.
What Would Happen | 5:43 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
if Bronco just cleared the starting roster sheet as soon as the game was over and every team member had to earn their spot all over for the next game. don't post the next week's roster until an hour before the game.

After a specific week long practice scheme for the upcoming game I'll guarantee that not one player would be looking past the next game and every player would be ready to play in case of an injury.

Specific assignments could be given to each sector of the team with specific goals and play the best players for that week.
Re:FIRE BRONCO! | 10:27 p.m | 6:32 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009

All you (Kewgr fans) want is BCS game?
That is exactly the issue...you guys expect too much of your team.
I know a BCS-material team when I see one. And BYU isn't one...even after they defeated OK without its starting QB.

Bronco got it right this year. There is not a "Quest for Perfection" campaign since he knows his team.
Fire Bronco? | 6:34 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009

and then bring in whom?
Lavell is not coming out of retirement.
TrueUte | 6:34 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
OK, I'll admit it; I usually don't give a flying feather whether or not the Y wins or chokes. I know it is very magnanimous of me; however, I really did want the Y to triumph over TCU. I think it is great that 50% of the BYU's recruits are from Utah. That is of great service to a "Pretty Great State." Keep it up. GO UTES
Of course | 6:50 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Yes, there is a difference in the way a coach will give an interview after a win or a loss. I don't think comparing a coach who just won a game and one who just got blown out is a good comparison.
sheldon king | 6:53 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
76% of all statistics are made up - including "what a difference's" "9 out of 10" stuff. As for Bronco showing no emotion. He kind of reminds me of a young Lavell Edwards. He turned out pretty good right?
dear monsro | 6:58 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
UH dude, brighm young university(BYU) is IN utah. what makes you think they shouldn't have players from utah. Lets think about this one...
and ther're not recruting one family merit. But I do agree with you that BYU OL plus DL is sorta slow. They need to work on those big guys a little bit.
Anonymous | 7:05 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Unless you are in the BCS mix, then poll results don't mean a lot for the MWC in terms of post-season. Finish the season strong. Utah is your next big challenge, and the question is whether this team has the heart to do it. They certainly seem to lack the speed, but that's normal for a BYU team.
Some Thoughts | 7:10 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Did any notice how TCU warms up? At full speed. I think speed is engrained in their team culture.

But I'm OK with the fact that TCU is a better football team this year. It's not the end of the world.
Weird Trend | 7:17 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
The problem is that BYU doesn't just lose the big games, they get crushed. When there is a lot of hype, or high stakes on the game it seems like they just don't show up. It happened against Florida and TCU. I wouldn't mind if we lost a hard fought game to a superior team, but that has not been the case this year, nor last year. We choke in the big games.
Mike | 7:28 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
The BYU team is incapable of adapting to the situation. I get sick to death of Bronco and his, "well, I thought we prepared well for (insert game here), but I guess we didn't prepare good enough and that's my fault."

You are darn right it is your fault. A good coach would be able to adapt to the situation and see where changes would be made to a game plan DURING a game. TCU had to have some weak spots, the Y coaches don't know how to react or find them.

The first change would be to bench Hall. Find a QB who can play with emotion and lead the team. Someone who will get into the face of a fat, slow offensive line and yell at them for not providing protection or blocking well.

Get rid of the 5'6" defensive back. He shouldn't be playing on a D-1 football team.

Fire Anae. His offense is so predictable. No flair or pinache. Find an offensive coordinater who has some creativity.

Figure out how to instill emotion into the players and himself.

I know Bronco doesn't like this type of criticism. Too Bad.
Bong | 7:31 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
How come when Colorado St lost to TCU a week ago, people weren't claiming the Rams are slow and the Frogs are fast? Unga ran for 123 yards. Was he fast and TCU slow? Take away some close calls such as ruffing the passer and pass interference when BYU was starting to build some momentum and the game would have been closer. Controversial calls at critical times during tuff games can be a killer, and there were some on the cougars. Compare some controversial balls and strikes on the Angels last night and you can see why the Yankees won. Remember Vladamir had some balls called strikes? Computer showed some wrong calls and what became an out should have been a walk. Controversials calls at a certain time can kill a team in a close game.

Their next move? | 7:44 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Their next move is to go div II where they will feel more comfortable. Or do the Boise state thing and paint the field blue. Same color and size as a BYU player's girlfreind's gameday dress.

I think that we all have to realize that TCU is a very good football team. I think our team (BYU) is a good football team also. Bronco has done a great job and will continue to do so. We have to just realize that we do not possess the speed and talent in our defensive backfield or defensive line. Our o-line is talented but slow. BYU will still have a very good season. Let's just not expect our guys to be more than they are. Max is doing a good job. It is hard to throw when you are on the ground.
Utah HS football | 7:58 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Monstro, in head to head competition a Texas HS team thumped on the best Utah HS team. What other proof do you need?

Trinity HS was faster and more athletic at all positions than Bingham HS.
Sad to Agree | 8:00 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Through out the last couple of years I have become very disappointed with the BYU offense. The play that started Sat.game down hill spiral was in the second possession. Moving the ball on the ground and then a 7 step drop - SACKED! The life left the team on that sack.
Max Hall is not the best quarterback on the team! He may have experience and skills, but he lacks composure. Hall does not lead, he goes through the motions.
I would like to see Riley N. get the snaps at this point, put some spark in the team. The play calling is very poor, game control is nonexistent!
The defense is on the field to much and does not have the spark now either.
Emotion makes up so much and it seems to be leaving the program.
I am caught in the middle, Bronco is a great man, but he seems to be losing his edge. I'm not suggesting any honor code violations, just lift the intensity on the side line - show some emotion!
