Utah offense | 9:31 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009

needs to get better in a hurry if they want to compete with TCU.
Ute Alum | 9:44 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Granted the ugliness of the game....I took away a few positives.

1- Our Defense is dangerously good. We fly to the ball and seal the edges as well as anyone in the country. And speed?! WOW....as much grief as our corners get it could be much worse (see BYU defense trying to cover TCU offense)

2- These are the kinds of games Utah is notorious for losing over the years. This is two come from behind victories late in games this season. I think the TCU and BYU games will be close and I like our chances with the mental toughness we've shown.

3- We are reloading at key positions. This is the sign of a the great program that Whit is building. Eddie Wide has more than exceeded expectations, and Joe Dale was an afterthought at the end of the game.

Thanks coach Whit for teaching these kids toughness. The team takes on the personality of their coach and our coach is tough as nails who HATES to lose. There are a lot of things that need cleaned up but nothing that experience and time won't fix. GO UTES!!!

That one took a toll on me to watch. We were ATROCIOUS on offense. It's pretty clear who the team to beat in the MWC is. . . and that team does not reside in Utah.

We have three weeks to fix the offense. Even if we don't our defense is good enough to not get embarrassed like BYU twice this year at home.

"A BYU loss gets more publicity than a Utah win. If BYU wins and we lose, they would again get more publicity. What gives?"

It is no that hard to figure out -- more Ute fans read and comment on articles about BYU than about Utah. News prints what people read. Blame your own.
Prediction | 6:17 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Utah loses to TCU, BYU, and San Diego. BYU wins out. BYU finished ranked and Utah is out of the rankings. TCU go to a bcs bowl, BYU in Las Vegas and Utah in the Pointsetta.
Good mess | 7:42 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
yeah it might not have been pretty but the bottom line is the Utes are still in the race for the conference championship. There are only two teams left that can make that claim and neither one is byu!!

Air Force is always a tough team to beat - they play so hard and make very few mistakes. I expect to see a much improved game against Wyoming.

I was great to see the fans stay behind the team the whole way unlike the embarassment that happened down south.

I want to publicly thank the coogs for once again embarassing yourselves in the national spotlight. Corso called it right and your team didn't show up at all. Bronco sounded pathetic at the end of that game.

As for the Utes - an ugly game is always better with a win. Now they can go back to their regular preparation and hopefully improve the things they need to.

Go Utes!!!

"yeah it might not have been pretty but the bottom line is the Utes are still in the race for the conference championship. There are only two teams left that can make that claim and neither one is byu!!"

There are still 4-5 conference games left per team, so not only is BYU still in contention, so is Wyoming, Air Force and even San Diego State. I'll cut you some slack though-addition and subtraction is TOUGH!!

BTW, keep razzing the Cougars more than you cheer for the Utes-it's status quo for Utah fans.. Congratulations Utes--you officially have the worst fans in the nation>
re: Prediction | 8:18 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Yeah, I remember your prediction for Saturday. I believe it involved a Utah crushing loss to Air Force, and a BYU win over TCU.

Sorry Nostradomus, but you're predictions have about as much credibility as Kirk Herbstret's!
Would you rather........ | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
win ugly, or get blown off your home field?

Cougar fans?

I think you would take all the ugly wins you could get your hands on right about now!

Utah wins ugly, that's just the status of their offense this year with a new QB and coordinator. Meanwhile, BYU wins pretty versus crap teams, and gets absolutly embarrassed by good team, even at mighty LES.

Bottom line is to win.
Nostradamus | 8:23 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
More accurate prediction:

BYU loses to Air Force...Utah wins out (yes, once again we beat the TDS). BCS realizes Boise only played and beat 1 decent team on the cheating blue carpet...Utah, out of nowhere gets the BCS game. BYU happy to play a Junior College in any bowl game...

This scenario is easily as likely as BYU winning out - they gave up on Saturday and that "give-up-ability" is likely to last...
Listen Up U Fans | 8:47 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Think back to BYU's games with Florida State and TCU. Now think of how terribly they got destroyed and how genuinely outclassed they were.

Now think how much worse it's going to be to lose to a team that has looked that bad, but is still better than Utah. It's a sad reality.
Utah Trolls | 9:08 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Utah is not the true school. BYU is the true school. I know its true.
dear Listen up U fans... | 9:09 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
You think your team is better because they score a lot of points against bad teams... and they are so pretty doing it... well I hate to tell you but your defense is horrible... so don't count that game against the U a victory yet...

I would bet the U's offense will score at least their average against the y if not more, but no way the y scores their average against they U... as we have seen, when they y plays good defenses their scoring drops dramatically.

So go ahead and believe the fools gold of those 50 point games against the likes of new mexico and unlv, because the y will be lucky to score 21 - 24 points against the U.
Reality Check | 9:28 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I was happy with the Utes Football this year until the last game. Cain and Schramm both took two steps backwards against AF. The whole team is lucky the Defense and Reed bailed out the win. I hope Schramm has another play in the book for first down besides the option read which isn't even and option because Cain never keeps the ball. A little league defense could see that play coming. Come on offense, we're halfway through the season you need to step it up Now. Luckily the Utes have two "supposedly" easy home games before TCU and you don't want to pull a BYU Melt Down in Ft. Worth.
boise state still rules | 9:31 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
but the pattern of improvement is set and the offense is about ready to explode...they'll be there for TCU to contend with , no doubt! The Y can only cry!!!
To: No Way | 9:38 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I doubt Utah stumbles at home to either Wyoming or New Mexico, so if they do lose to TCU, they will not drop out of the polls because it will be a much closer game than Saturday's embarrassment at LES.

And I'd give Utah a 30% chance of pulling the upset at TCU. It's called "grit"... Utah has it. Look it up.
Me, Myself and I | 9:48 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Bottom line is this same AFA team gave TCU all they wanted last week. Granted TCU finished the game off in regulation 21-14. A win is a win is a win. No matter how ugly its still in the left side of the Win Lose column.

Go Utes!!!
To Reality Check | 9:58 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
But isn't that how you "establish the run"? Ya, I was pretty frustrated with the O as well, although somewhere in there we have to find some credit for AFA's defense, plus no one has mentioned all the dropped passes - I can think of 4 or 5 at least. I think Jereme Brooks has developed a bad case of alligator arms this season. Sure hope they figure some things out against Wyoming and UNM. Go Utes!!

How is those "I hate BYU" shirts coming along ute fans? Your team gets lucky against another average team and all you clowns talk about is BYU. why? Living in the shadows still again. Or could it be the two losses you know are coming? Wear those shirts proudly for 13 more days ute fans.
re: 9:38am | 10:29 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
You're right. Utah finds ways to win games even when they play very poor on offense, like Saturday. Part of that is grit. Since the debacle at UNLV in 07, Whit has instilled a different attitude in this program. They do not let bad days become bad losses. Guarantee that Saturday was a loss just a few years ago. This program can win when they play terrible.

The other reason Utah will not get destroyed by TCU is defense. Utah's defense can actually stop TCU on occasion, unlike BYU's pathetic excuse for a defense. The Utah O will struggle to score, but the D will keep the game within striking distance.

Need to see Cain get back on track and Schramm open things up more before the TCU game. It's one thing to be conservative when you're moving the ball and running time off the clock, but when you continue to go 3 and out, it's time to at least take a shot. Hit Reed on a Slant and Go. If he doesn't make the play, we punt, just like we already are doing. If he makes a play, the O scores.

That average team gave TCU more of a game than your beloved Cougs. I guess what you're saying is BYU is below average this year? As far as two loses coming I only see one team that can take Utah out in conference and that's TCU. As far as the second one goes you must be predicting Utah to lose their bowl game...wait Utah doesn't lose bowl games that's BYU!!!

This looks a lot like last year when TCU spanked BYU & the Utes were struggling to beat the "lesser" teams like New Mexico. Everyone was singing the praises of TCU & rightfully so. Then the Mighty Utes silenced them.... Not saying it will happen again this year, but our coaches know how to prepare for each game. We will be ready to play & we won't be intimidated!

Reality Check | 11:19 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Uh, minor detial here, AF lost to TCU 17-20, not 14-21 as mentioned above.

Hey, guess what, 3 of Utah's starters on defense from last year have NFL contracts now--2 of those were underclssmen who left early.

Utah lost an excellent senior quarterback and his 3 top receivers.

On special teams the Utes lost the nation's best kicker from last year.

And, the injury bug has bitten pretty hard this year--no excuses, just a fact, and Utah lost its top running back, and possibly its best player, in the third game of the year, not to mention several other starters who have been out for extended periods.

Against that backdrop, I'd say 6-1 is great! Especially since the Utes had a legitimate chance to win at Oregon.

Check back in a couple or weeks. I predict the Utes will be 8-1 then.

Do the Utes have a chance to win in Fort Worth? Well, maybe we should play the game and find out.
Re-moose | 11:28 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Geez moose, why R you posting on the Ute article? I guess the coogies are no fun to watch after their 2nd BEAT DOWN at home this season. I'd say get on the UTE Train but second thought, they don't want you either. You stay on the provo/zoobie Titanic until Nov. 28 and the Utes will make it a Trifecta of Beat Downs for the home team.

5 comments since my last post and your STILL talking BYU. Enjoy those shirts boys, enjoy your shirts.

I would rather wear a stupid "quest" shirt, than the ones that say "I hate BYU". I hear the MUSS is looking into "I hate BYU" hats for the game in Provo. Little brother will always be our little brother. But, hey you do have your BCS games to fall on.
Re; UteMan | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
The "Mighty Utes" didn't "silence" TCU last year; the Horned Frogs silenced themselves.

IIRC, the TCU kicker missed not one, not two, but three easy field goals in last year's game. Had he made any one of them the game would have turned out differently.

This is a different year, and this year's version of the Utes is not even close to being as good as last year's. TCU is much, much better, they're on a mission to win the conference championship, and the game is in Fort Worth.

Meanwhile, Utah has struggled to put away mediocre teams all season long. Unlike last year they have only one "blowout" victory of more than 20 points this season; last year they had 4 at this point in the season.

The only good team they have played (Oregon) gift-wrapped 4 turnovers for the Utes and still beat them soundly.

It won't be pretty on November 14th. Brian Johnson is gone, and so is Louie Sakoda. The Utes are going to get slaughtered.

I'm grateful, annually, just to escape w/a win, when we play AF. They're a dangerous team, and really play us tough, every year. UTAH has just as good a shot, of making it to yet, another, BCS bowl-game, as anyone else. We've got to make obvious corrections over the next two weeks, but we have the speed, athleticism and toughness to hang w/TCU. Our final game won't even be close. We'll smash provo.

On a side note, provo is not a very good team, PERIOD.
Cougarf@n | 12:25 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
There's an awful lot of arrogance on this board considering the way Utah eeked out another game. BYU certainly got worked by TCU, but so will Utah so stop acting like Utah has done something this year. BYU's bad loss to TCU doesn't change the fact that Utah continues to play mediocre against bad teams, but I'm sure the haters love it. Utah's offense won't do anything against TCU. BYU and Utah are both heading to mediocre bowl games this year so I'm not sure what the smack is about. BYU is 1-2 spots outside the top-25 in both major polls and will be ranked again in one to three weeks. If Utah can avoid a blowout against TCU (and BYU doesn't play like Utah against AF) the rivalry game might just involve two ranked teams.
Re: Re; UteMan | 12:47 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
If a seven point loss to Oregon is considered as getting "beaten soundly" then what's your definition of "slaughtered?" 10 points? 13? That's probably a fair guess for TCU over Utah given the game's in Fort Worth and that they are indeed a quality team. (Although I do believe the Utes have a fair chance at an upset due to their defense.)

My question to you, 12:05pm poster, is what do you call the 38-7 debacle... whatever word you choose it must imply something way, way beyond a "slaughter" going by your rating scales.
Funny | 12:47 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Even after their second embarrassing loss at home, Byu fans cannot take it like adults. They are still making excuses and or redirecting.

"Oh yea, Utah will lose too"

"Utah is still our little brother"

"Oh yea, Utah barley beat AF"

"Just wait until Byu beats Utah"

"Go print more I hate BYU shirts"

"Utah got lucky last year but won't this year"

"Utah will lose to TCU"

"TCU will destroy Utah"

"At least we fill our stadium (but leave early)"

Byu fans are undoubtedly the worst and lamest fans ever. Cannot take defeat (or victory) with any sense of dignity. Man up you lost...

The Utah-Air Force game was pretty much like the previous 10 Utah-Air Force games. This rivalry is never pretty, but Utah has now won 7 of the last 11 games (all in the MWC era), all of which were close. Last year, Utah beat Air Force by 7. The biggest margin of victory for either team was 2004, when Utah won by 14. Air Force's biggest margin of victory was 9 in 2000.

What I have noticed is that Utah's defense is very tough in the red zone. It took not just one fumble, but two, to give Air Force their only touchdown. The first was at mid-field. Then after Air Force went three and out, Utah fumbled the punt and gave Air Force the ball around the 10. Take away either fumble and Air Force doesn't get in the end zone. It is hard to blame the defense for that. Of course, Utah got its field goal after Air Force turned the ball over.

MWC era Utah Air Force games:

2009 – Utah 23, Air Force 16 (OT)
2008 – Utah 30, Air Force 23
2007 – Air Force 20, Utah 12
2006 – Utah 17, Air Force 14
2005 – Utah 38, Air Force 35
2004 – Utah 49, Air Force 35
2003 – Utah 45, Air Force 43 (3OT)
2002 – Air Force 30, Utah 26
2001 – Air Force 38, Utah 37
2000 – Air Force 23, Utah 14
1999 – Utah 21, Air Force 15

Re: Funny... good post. Its true... a good portion of y fans are just not man enough to eat some crow. They got beat and there are few (if any) comments from y fans on any article about how TCU just is flat better. They have to take attention of the pounding they received by focusing on the rivalry game... which, at this point, is all they really have left. That's why the majority of y fans are despised... they can't man up when it comes to losing. As a Ute fan... I know when a team is better than mine. I know that Oregon beat us by a touchdown. In my eyes... Oregon is a touchdown better than Utah. Far be it for a y fan to say that TCU is better than their team by 31 points.

"I'm grateful, annually, just to escape w/a win, when we play AF. They're a dangerous team, and really play us tough, every year."

Then followed by

"On a side note, provo is not a very good team, PERIOD."

I see several Ute fans consoling themselves with this line of reasoning; we didn't play poorly, they say, Air Force is a good team that always plays us tough.

Yet for some reason the same logic never applies when they play BYU. Aside from the 2004 and 2008 games, every BYU-Utah game since 1996 has been decided by a touchdown or less, most years in the last minute or on the last play of the game.

Over the past 20 years, the series is deadlocked at 10 wins apiece, unlike the Air Force series where Utah has an advantage.

And don't give me how last year's lopsided score is significant until you can explain how in 2003 a 10-2 MWC Champion Utah team could barely beat a putrid, 7th-place 4-8 BYU team that was starting a grass-green 4th-string QB by a score of 3-0.

Utah running back Eddie Wide scored a pair of touchdowns for the Utes on a day when the team had little going right for it. Still, the Utes beat Air Force 23-16 in overtime.
