Great exercise, but unfortunately 50% of the guys/girls that show up to play don't understand the fundamentals of the game and end up with a bad attitude, injury, or have a bad experience from poor officiating.

Many Stake's have banned any kind of league play, but allow recreation use. If the Church had any influence of the game of basketball, they'd make it interesting by inviting the wards to play, only the requiring each ward to trade 3 to 4 of their players and vice versa during the game. This way, guys and gals bond better and get to know more folks other than those within their ward boundaries, and it leaves a feeling of mutual respect from all parties involved!

funny, I was just thinking today how I wished that I didn't have to go play BB again when the on season starts. I'm really not that good at it, so it isn't too enjoyable. I wish there were a different sport each year that we'd rotate through, including some lesser played sports so that no-one would have huge advantages, or at least so that different people would have advantages at different sports. Anyone for a bowling alley in the cultural hall?

Church ball never brought in investigators. It does not serve the mission of the church. Church ball needs to be dropped and the gym space reallocated to contribute to the mission of the church.
Racquetball anyone? | 2:34 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
I've seen many non-members and inactive members get more acquainted with the church through basketball. It is also great exercise. Of course, it takes people with a charitable attitude to be involved to keep it positive for everyone there.

For the record, I only play basketball now and then. However, I thoroughly enjoy the softball and volleyball tournaments when they come around! Now if we can just find a practical way to incorporate a racquetball court!

Providing sports is just another way the church seeks to benefit all parts of peoples lives, not just give Sunday instruction. It's also a natural extension of the very social atmosphere at an LDS meetinghouse.

The most interesting thing about this article for me was the history of the buildings.

"A connecting foyer and office complex linked the cultural hall with the chapel, a design known by the nicknames "Young's Twin" and "Colonel's Twins."

I grew up in such a stake with older buildings. Too bad the church has lost its innovation of architecture for buildings.

I know that standard cookie cutter floor plans are cheaper - but I appreciate the few older buildings that are left.

Des. News, you have the resources, please publish more history and pictures of the church. Thanks.
