It is good to see that at least one candidate, Bill Barton knows about and favors SB-81 the state law that went into effect July 1, 2009. This law restricts public employers like WVC from hiring illegal aliens to work on public projects. This law requires the city to check all new employees hired after July 1st and also to require contractors to agree to hire only legal workers on city projects after July 1st.

With unemployment being what it is these days, it seems only right that taxpayer funds going to public projects go to those legally in the country. Since WVC is not yet certified to use the DHS E-Verify Program, we can only assume that the mayor, city council and the city managers don't even know or care about enforcing this law, since they don't use the program designed to determine which prospective employees are legal. Bill Barton is probably the only one that even knows what the law is about.

It seems that if you are a WVC voter and you are concerned about the illegal immigration problem that you would vote for Bill Barton. Your vote counts!!

I just need to make a correction to this article. I work for BNA Consulting as an Electrical Designer, not for the LDS Church. I was employed by the LDS Church for 23 years before joining BNA.

I'm worried about one issue candidates like Bill Barton. The City has other issues that need to be addressed, like roads, development, schools, parks the list is long and this one issues just doesn't cut it.

To: A WVC Voter,

How many employee hires does a City Council do? A City Manager, a City Attorney, maybe a City Council Secretary, but most cities use one of the City Executive Secretaries for that, ALL were hired before July 1, 2009. Other then that it is up to the City Department heads to certify the citizenship and legal status for work in the USA of their Department hires. BUT, since WVC has had a hiring freeze for all non-essential jobs, the only real people to worry about being illegal will be your police and fire employees hired since July 1, 2009.

What is most disturbing about your comment is that the State Attorney's General office questions the legality of SB-81 and has advised the police and other state entities to not enforce it until they have a final determination from the State Supreme Court.

I would much rather have a WVC Councilmember who is concerned first about the City and second, or further down the list, about how many possible illegal aliens are being employed by the City.

Please join me in voting for Don Christensen, WVC Council At-Large.

To the Worried Voter who posted a comment on the issue of Bill and Don: you are obviously one of the Christensen family since you had the audacity to call Bill Barton a one issue candidate. I know the term "one issue candidate" from a questionare that was submitted by Don concerning the race and his fellow candidates. Don called EVERYONE- except Tom Huynh- a "one issue candidate", and then had the nerve to ask all the eliminated contenders for their support an hour after the primary election, before we could all have a chance to see it. That was a shotty thing to do.
As someone who actually was a candidate in the primary and recently met Bill and his beautiful wife, I can assure the public that he is far from one issue, unless ofcourse that one issue is people and their quality of life. The Bartons were strong support for a neighbor of mine who was facing eviction from our community and they came to our homeowners association meting and really cared. They are members of the Lions club, and even help with provisions for the hearing impaired. Now those are real issues. So...still woried?

In keeping with a longstanding Deseret News policy of not publishing stories the day before or the day of the election, no comments will be posted on election stories Monday or Tuesday. The rationale for this policy being applied to comments is to prevent the last-minute dissemination of untrue allegations against a candidate that could influence voters.
