Unbelievable | 10:45 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
Wow, everything RSL needed to have happen did. Dave needs to send Seattle a thank you gift basket. Great day, with the exception of the massacre in Provo, for sports in the state. Probably the best part was keeping the Rocky Mountain Cup and keeping Colorado out of the playoffs again.
todd from santa ana | 10:46 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
per MLS website, Fans on facebook reported if New England draws tomorrow, they beat out Colorado

Colorado has more goals, better goal differential and split 2 matches. DC loses to both of them on all matters

Someone explain how New England can make it unless they win?
todd from santa ana | 10:47 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
The most grateful team other than us tonight is guess who:

Colorado

They are breathing, because Dallas lost, United drew, Toronto lost
todd from santa ana | 10:52 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
we have to be fair and everyone here should take a moment and thank and congrats to much maligned Jason Kreis.

He got his team up and starting Williams and Findley not Mathis was brilliant and gutty.

He showed me some you know what....

Lets leave the man alone and give him one more year then we will reevaluate
My heck! | 11:00 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
We did it! This is insane! We made it! It is time to play that song of Busta Rhymas and Linkin Park, cause fellas, we are going to playoffs!
j-man | 11:04 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
WOW WOW WOW WOW, when everyone doubted I said we would do it even with the loss last week. Way to go RSL!!! Let's take down Columbus/Chicago whoever we play we can do it!!! Everyone come and spend your Halloween at Rio Tinto Stadium!!!!
Anonymous | 11:33 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
so does any body know what date we play the first play off date. acoring to MSL page they start on the oct 29.
Unbelievable!!! | 11:41 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
What a night! Even though the article had it wrong...should read, "NY beat Toronto 5-0, and KC tied DC"...but enough of that!

Whoooooaaaaaa!!! Seattle helped us out, but we earned that spot just like the rest of them! Indeed the best soccer I've seen RSL play in a long time, maybe ever! Colorado looked silly. That stadium's gonna be nuts for the playoffs! See you all there...two years in a row!!!

Go RSL!
todd from santa ana | 11:57 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
I researched this playoff scenario out. It is dumb not to have seeds 1 play 8, 2-7 etc because if you take from other divisions to fill out playoff brackets, you have interdivisional matchups.

THIS IS WHAT APPEARS DUE TO 3 TEAM TIE

IF NEW ENGLAND WINS OR DRAWS TOMORROW THEY ARE #7 SEED #3 IN EAST, THIS MEANS THEY OPEN UP AT FOXBORO VS CHICAGO

THEN REAL #8 BECOMES #4 IN EAST AND OPENS UP HOME AND HOME SERIES NEXT WEEK HERE AGAINST COLUMBUS

IF NEW ENGLAND LOSES

REAL BECOMES#7 SEED AND HOSTS CHICAGO GAME 1 NEXT WEEK

3 WAY TIEBREAKER NEW ENGLAND WON BECAUSE THEY HAD ONE MORE POINT COMPOSITE VS THE OTHER 2 TEAMS TIED WITH,

AM I RIGHT?

Todd from santa ana | 11:59 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
If New England loses

Colorado backs in #8 seed and hosts Galaxy

correct?
Planets Aligned | 12:00 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Wow!!! INcredible night! Way to go RSL!
Hope the game is Friday so i can trick or treat with the kids sat.
todd from santa ana | 12:01 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
wrong, I meant as# 8 seed Colorado hosts Columbus Real hosts Chicago as #7 seed

only if New England loses

If they win they host Chicago we host Columbus
Arsenal44 | 12:08 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
WHAT A NIGHT!!! PLAYOFFS HERE WE COME! I have no voice left!
J Crunch | 12:15 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
If New England wins, they're the 3 seed in the East (with 42 points) and RSL is the 4 in the East. If New England ties, RSL is the 3 seed in the East and New England is 4 seed (due to a 4-way head-to-head tiebreaker with RSL, DC, and Colorado.) Head-to-head records would be: RSL 3-2-2 for 11 points (1.57 points/game), NE 2-1-3 for 9 points (1.5 points/game), Colorado 2-2-3 for 9 points (1.29 points/game), DC 1-3-2 for 5 points (0.83 point/game). So RSL would win the 4-way tiebreaker. Then it would go to a 3-way tiebreaker between DC, NE, and Colorado and NE wins that tiebreaker with 1.5 pts/game. (Col would have 1.25 pts/game and DC 1.0 pts/game) If NE loses, Colorado sneaks in and would play Columbus - RSL wins the 3-way tiebreaker with DC and Colorado and Colorado wins the tiebreaker vs. DC because of goal differential (Colorado and DC both won at home against each other, so the next tiebreaker is goal differential.)
J Crunch to todd | 12:23 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
todd, we called it didn't we. We both thought things would fall in RSL's favor. Still, I can't believe it happened! Great game tonight! Findley, Andy, Espindola, Johnson, Javi, Kyle, Beltran, Borchers, Wingert, Olave, and don't forget my man of the match - Nicky Rimando! To a man everyone played a great game. Subs came in and played well too. Nice insurance goal by Yura, but if he'd given the ball up a couple of times he had Javi open. I too loved seeing both Andy and Javi in the game. Clint has had a nice season, but Jason made the right decision in starting Andy tonight. I like RSL's chances against either Columbus or Chicago. Bring it on! If I were a CRapids fan, I'd hate RSL. 3 years in a row we keep them out of the playoffs (unless New England loses). How sweet it is!
Anonymous | 12:23 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
How in the world did that just happen??? Awesome! Really helps take the sting out of BYU's no show. Thanks to everyone who made it happen: everyone on RSL as well as Toronto FC, DC United, and especially Seattle. Way to go RSL!
Get real  | 2:16 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
It's great and all, but don't get too excited. These teams know how to play on the road, something this team lacks. But hopefully this momentum will get them through the next round.

Can I get it?

Ready?

Way to step it up boys. Repeat that performance in the playoffs and we'll be watching RSL soccer deep into November!

When will this end? Nobody cares about soccer except jcrunch and todd from santa anna so would the d news spend their resources reporting on something people want to hear about, like American football?
Vince Clortho | 8:04 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Excellent crowd my friends...

That really makes two weeks in a row where results were almost perfect for RSL...Excellent effort, Colorado had some great feeds into the box but our defense was cool and collected...I think Wingert gets the nod for best effort and accuracy in tackling, but the other 3 were almost as solid, Nicky was big too...Williams starts and is a big part of both goals...hmmmmmm

Playoff philosophy: Play to win, play to win, play to win...
Cam | 8:18 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Wow! I am now out of the deep depression of my Cougs getting getting murdered by the Frogs. So, who would we rather play, Chicago or Columbus? Which team do we match up better with? Thoughts? I will be there next week! Can't wait! See you Saturday!
I am excited but still | 8:39 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
This is great news. But it isn't reason to start praising the coach. Seriously, we have gotten very lucky the last two years. We got in the playoffs not because we won a few games in a row but because other teams lost. If they keep it up in the playoffs, then Jason may deserve another season but if they choke like last year against the Red Bulls and are unable to put the ball in the net then I will still be calling for his head. One game does not make a season. They played terribly for most of year. How soon we forget. Go real. Keep playing with heart. We know you can make it past the first round but we have to see passionate play, not multiple cards.
RSL to the Playoffs? | 8:54 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
What a sick joke. What a stupid league. MLS needs to revamp. It should be played more like the EPL...

If playoffs are a must they can have a league cup to the side just like the FA/Carling Cup.
Chadders | 9:38 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
I already got my tickets, right behind the goal on the 2nd row!!!! I couldn't be more excited. I hope New England wins so we get Columbus and Colorado gets to go home. GO RSL!!!
Anonymous | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Tell me how RSL making the playoffs is not on the front page of the paper? But BYU's beating is there? Why is it always the losses that make the front page. RSL loses, front page, RSL makes the playoffs (on the unlikliest of chances)put them way in the back of the sports section with a little picture of Robbie Findley on the front page of the sports section, nothing on the very front page though? Makes no sense. When will this state embrace soccer? The state won't until the media jumps on board! I know that this is a very common gripe but soccer is here to stay, you can remain hillbillys or you can start paying attention to this beautiful sport.
RSL lives | 11:15 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Kreis is a decent coach I don't think all of the struggles this season lay at his feet. Just look at the goal difference and you see that we may have played poorly at times but the end result is that we have as much or more fire power than anyone in the league. Plus shaking up the structure of a team isn't the right move if you want to be consist and should only happen if you are consistently bad which RSL was not. We've shown we can win against any team in the league. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the playoffs. Kreis is an attacking coach which is what we need here and now, exciting and entertaining soccer with a defense that can push forward and get back to defend.
MLS Playoffs | 11:33 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
You can think whatever you want, but the cost of shaping the league like the EPL whose teams hardly have to travel would be disastrous for the financial structure of the MLS. Plus we have the US Open Cup which is shaped similarly to the FA and does not even come close to providing the financial boost the playoffs give. This is the right structure to have here and now eventually the EPL setup might work but not likely. If you didn't know the Supporters Shield has equal weight to a team as winning the MLS Cup. The tiebreakers are hardly different than the EPL as goal differential is pushed below the win loss ratio of the tied teams in the MLS. Either way the best 8 teams make the playoffs. RSL wins all the tiebreakers against all the possible teams at 40 points, plus they would win it even if it came down to goal difference. We need to build the game our own way with our own style variety can be good but style doesn't matter if you don't win just ask Spain about this summer. Go RSL
Big Green Tractor | 12:36 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Everything went great! RSL got the playoff spot, BYU was turned into cream of cougar, and the Utes beat Air Force. Couldn't have been a better night!

Never, it will never end. I love that you can't handle it. Since you decided to attach your pride to soccer failing, we have beaten you, we are beating you, and we will continue to beat you.

How's it taste?
re: anon @ 10:17am | 1:37 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Its simple, really. Its the difference between the number of people who follow BYU football vs the number of people that follow RSL.
re: anonymous | 2:43 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Because nobody cares about soccer except people who are paid to blog about it by RSL.
nerves | 2:48 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
If the league were like the EPL it would be a very compact table. All these people thinking we played so terrible and don't deserve a playoff spot. There are 9 points between us and the supporters shield winner, 8 points between us and the western conference champs. That is not even a three game spread. Think about it, 2.8 games seperate us from the wc champs, how do we not deserve a playoff berth? Just because we had to have three games go our way this weekend to get in doesn't mean we are push overs that just got lucky. The league is very ballanced and whether you make the playoffs or not is a fine line for a lot of teams.
At least we came out and did our part by winning 3-0. we could have pulled a Toronto and blew it 5-0 to the worst team in the league and miss the playoffs. One of the worst sports chokes in recent history.
Foreigner | 2:49 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
what is BYU? what league are they in? who is their top goalscorer?
georg | 4:16 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Great night in Salt Lake and well worth the trip from Southern Utah, cannot wait to see another match next week.
RSL played great last night and I have to compliment Jason on keeping Mathis on the bench and starting Andy Williams. As rewarding it feels to be in the playoffs, We have to admit we got real lucky to have made it in like we did.
I am cheering for Columbus because I think we match up better with Chicago.
T-ravis | 4:36 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Great job guys! That was one of the most complete performences I've ever seen out of this team. Findley was on fire,(brilliant touch over the keeper and then slot it home.) Andy orchestrated the attack like only he can. (Assists on both goals.) And nothing could get past Olave Borchers and Rimando. If this form keeps up it'll be another deep run into the playoffs for sure.
todd from santa ana | 4:54 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
they will not post my takes but the soccer haters. Actually keep it up I like the fact you guys hate it. It just fuels the fire, jealousy and envy. COmparing it to BYU, well I respect all, but many of us do not care about BYU (although i did Lavell Edwards, Steve Young, Jim Mcmahon) still why do we not treat each thing separately and let fans cheer for what they want.

If you want to follow american football 2 things

1) get behind my Broncos

2) or have your boy Checketts bring the lambies to Salt Lake

I thought so...
todd to georg | 4:57 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
i taped the game i am going to watch it soon, actually I think Columbus will be better. I feel more confident we can sneak out 1 goal home win.

They have a more docile, less frenzied atmosphere than Chicago. I think we could get draw there to move on.

I think they can be had.
KC | 6:02 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
I love that fact that this win makes soccer haters miserable. Congrats to long-suffering soccer fans.

As for RSL, they proved their grit. Several of us owe them apologies. Nice work guys. Sorry I doubted you.
todd from santa ana | 6:50 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
in a rather boring affair-i can now tell you we will play Columbus,

a second half free kick enabled New England to win this game 1-0

Rather lackluster really. Columbus territorial and had couple first chances, New England better in 2nd half, whatever.

Anyway, we take on Columbus as of hour or so no time announced yet, maybe later tonight.

Do not fear we can beat them, we are just as good
georg | 6:58 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Todd have to say that Columbus did not look great today, but they did not have much to play for.
We did spank them earlier in the season at home so lets hope we can put up 2 at home and then hope we can do something on the road. Not something this season has seen much of.
Just real nice to be still playing!!!!
georg | 7:13 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Another thought, It was great to see Yura get a late goal last night, His hard work paid off and he may yet get another goal for RSL before his move to Denmark.

I have heard that he does have an opt-out in his contract with Randers should they get relegated.
I know that not all RSL fans like Yura but I sure would like to see him back in a RSL uniform next season.
Rob | 10:17 p.m. Oct. 25, 2009
Hahaha the haters think it's a conspiracy that rsl is doing so well. Yes all 18000 plus fans were paid to go to the game last night and scream until their lungs give out. Oh man that's great. See you all later this week!
